Take you live to an nbc exclusive. The plane that came dangerously close to sliding into the ocean. Well explain what happened here. And later a sunday sitdown with oscar nominee touragep. Henson. She starred in empire where she plays the notorious cookie lyons. You have this tick when people call me cookie and im not at work, the fans. I know, i understand. I get it, but it does something to me. Cookie im like, eh. Thats not my name. A sunday sitdown later in the show. Lets begin with the terrifying 38 minutes in hawaii on saturday when people there were warped falsely that a Ballistic Missile attack was underway. Nbcs Jacob Soberoff is in honolulu for us. Good morning. What happened here . Reporter yesterday cell phone signals were overloaded as others called their loved ones to say goodbye. It was a chaotic and confusing scene in a place known for its tranquility. Just after 8 00 a. M. In hawaii, pandemonium in paradise. Hysteria triggered by a false alarm. The terrifying message screamed across cell phones. Ballistic missile threat in bound be to hawaii. Seek immediate shelter. This is not a drill. The u. S. Pacific command has detected a missile threat to hawaii. People started to run. The hotel staff came and told my parents, seek shelter. You only have 12 minutes. Reporter the mistake was part of an Early Warning system put into place amid rising tensions between President Trump and north Korean Leader kim jongun. Less than 24 hours before the false alarm we were given an exclusive look at the room. If a Nuclear Missile is launch launched, this is where youll know . Theyll receive a message and theyll activate the statewide system. Wheres the phone . Right here behind us. Reporter saturday morning that phone never rang and there never was a call. The alert went out. It took 38 minutes for a correction to be tweeted out. The governor took the responsibility. Today is the day that most of us will never forget and many in our community was deeply affected by this. And im sorry. Reporter apology from officials here from a system designed to save lives instead turning them upside down. Willie, in the wake of this false alarm that happened during a shift change in a routine test, the governor announced he is suspending the missile Early Warning tests until further notice and from this point forward there will be two people at all times responsible for sending out the alerts like the ones that terrified so many. Seems like a good idea. Taking us inside the room where it all happened. Thank you so much. Jeremy bash is an nbc news analyst and former chief of staff at the cia and pentagon for president obama. I guess the question is, what exactly happened here . The ex34planation is somebody pushed the wrong button on a shift change . If this did happen, had this been real, there are reports from inside the airport in honolulu that the passengers were getting the notifications on their phones but no one in the airport, tsa, security, otherwise knew what was going on. It shouldnt be that easy, willie. From my perspective, you should have to hold down a button for three seconds or more before any alert goes out. I think a twoperson rule is critically important. If a missile were launched, our military satellites would detect it and it would be word would get out from the u. S. Military directly to the secretary of defense because the secretary of defense would have to decide within about five to ten minutes to launch our National Missile defense to intercept the in bound missiles. Of course, the president would have to be advised as to wlorptd he wanted to weigh any retaliation. This statewide Emergency Management system is not the system our military would use to knock down incoming missiles or retaliate. As you watched this, jeremy, did you think to yourself, boy, this could lead to a real life worst Case Scenario if a false alert was going and we know what russias been capable of in terms of hacking into our election system and so on, if somebody got in with a bad idea and wanted to hack and give an alert, could this lead to something worse . Its very distressing because with the United States and north korea effectively on hair trigger alert over these tensions, a miscalculation, a human error could lead to accidental war. Its very concerning if our military had the same problem or if, worse, on the other side in pyongyang and the northern regime they mistakenly thought we were attacking them, they could do something very pre1i7 to uw us precipitous. During the basketball game during residents of hawaii saw a notice to seek shelter. Thank god it wasnt true. Jeremy bash, thank you so much. So far President Trump has remained silent about the scare in hawaii. He tweeted about the stock market, Hillary Clintons emails and the newly released book about his white house. Nbcs Kelly Odonnell is traveling with President Trump. Shes near his maralago estate. Whats been the reaction from the white house . Reporter to set the scene, willie, the president had already been at his golf resort for a few hours and he was back at maralago within 40 minutes. He was briefed by his chief of staff and National Security adviser, but he has not commented about it. Now the white house has pointed out this was a statecontrolled issue, but he has not discussed the fear that was generated or the context of National Security given this was a false warning about a Ballistic Missile attack. Just this morning he has already tweeted about being misquoted about his relationship with the north Korean Leader but nothing about what happened in hawaii. Kelly odonnell traveling with the president. Chuck todd is nbcs political director. Moderator of meet the press. Good to see you. Morning. Part of the reason there was such alarm on this, obviously on its face its scary for the people of hawaii but for the context which is the heightened rhetoric and escalations of tensions. President trump saying what he says about kim jongun and vice ver versa. I think the scare here is this is not such a farfetched thing that might happen. Reporter that is what made this so alarming, and certainly for the citizens of hawaii. Because you sit there as there have been concerns, i mean, you have done stories on a sunday morning about what happens if there is a misinterpretation of a tweet or a back and forth between kim jongun and the president and this president right now . And so all of a sudden it was that debates sitting out there and then heres an alert. So im certain so many residents, and were hearing stories of concern and fear and people taking this very seriously, its understandable why they should take it very seriously considering the atmosphere we live in. I think it 1er7b8 lcertainly on to the techs. The quote of the week as reported by the Washington Post that the president of the United States in a meeting about immigration and daca used the term shole countries. He of course used the full word. Does the white house appreciate why this was damaging not just to his reputation but to negotiations over the immigration, the impression of the United States around the world or do they say this is trump being trump. He talks like the guy at the end of the bar. Hes talking to the forgotten man, et cetera, et cetera . Does the white house feel this was a bad week for him . Reporter internally, yes, the white house knows this is a bad week, absolutely, but theyre trying to put the best face forward which is why you hear the spin you have. Look, i think the more damaging comment was not the vulgar comment, it was the sentiment behind it. The idea its the norway comment to me thats much more damaging long term because it reinforces the notion that this president does believe in playing favorites using race as a way to do it when it comes to immigration. White norwegians, more that hes more open to than black africans. That sentiment is what i think is going to cause all sorts of pain for the republican party. This is a party that before trump came out, before there was a donald trump, willie, this was a party desperately trying to run away from this stereotype, that that the party is nothing more than a collection of nativists that share the president s sentiment on race. And here is now the president as leader of the party bringing this stereotype front and center. I think it is setting back the partys attempt at trying to broaden its appeal. The president denied on twitter this week using that language. Republicans and democrats alike in the meeting using that term. They were talking about important legislation, chuck. With dhaaka and immigration reform. The president said it has to be part of a deal. Is there going to be a deal on immigration . Thats a great question. Im not as confident as i once was. I think the president has essentially handed the leverage to the democrats now. I think you have a bunch of congressional realizing they made the politics even more difficult for them. So i do think leverage is now in the hands of the democrats. The question is, do Congressional Republicans dump the president , cut a deal on their own and force the president to sign an agreement or do they still continue to try to work with the white house . Right now i think theyll try to work with the white house. I think if we have more negative reaction, they may cut him out. Even the president himself sent mixed messages this week where he stands on daca. Well look for more on meet the press when hes joined by rand paul and michael bennett. Firefighter rusty duncan was one of the first to arrive at the scene that day. A little hand grabbed my pant leg. I just saw his eyes looking up at me and i knew i had to get him out of there. Rusty visited ryland in the hospital several times and promised him a ride home in the truck when ryland was feeling better. This week after two months and multiple surgeries, that day came. Rusty picked up ryland who rode up front in the stockdale fire and rescue rig waiving out the window to adoring crowds as he passed with a huge smile on his face. It was amazing. Doctors spend their lives healing other people, but what happens when physicians become patients . Who do they trust with their own health and their own lives . And what if the only doctor can save you is you . Dylan shines our sunday spotlight on a young doctor whos now specializing in saving his own life. Dr. David saganbaum is in the fight of his own life to find a cure for an extremely rare disease. Its almost like a mix between an autoimmune disease and cancer. Its relentless. He is fighting to take the most Important Patient in his own life, himself. I said goodbye to my family and friends end of november and 2010. I had my last rites read to me all because my immune system was attacking my organs. The 32yearold doctor at the university of pennsylvania was always a picture of health. A former quarterback at georgetown university, he had never faced any serious medical issues. That all changed in july 2010. I went from being a healthy third Year Medical Student to being hospitalized in the intensive care unit with every organ failing, liver, kidney, bone marrow completely shut down. Gained 70 pounds of flute for liver and kidney failure. Didnt think i was going to survive. Intensive chemotherapy brought him back but two relapses followed. Did the doctors know at first that it was this disease . No. It took about 11 weeks to diagnose me. With very little known about the disease david took the treatments into his own hands. What i learned very quickly is though i now had a name for the thing they were trying to kill me, the medical community had such a poor understanding for how the disease works. His research led him to the university of arkansas. So david started here. He became very interested in the research. Together the two men started building a network looking for solutions, racing against time. When you have a deadly disease, you dont really want to waist time. We prioritize all the possible studies. We go into recruitment next. Despite the research, david continues to relapse. I turned to my sisters and my wife and i told them, i said, im going to dedicate the rest of my life, however long that might be, to trying to cure this disease. Blood works good . Blood works good. Of course, i kind of always good. With the disease that could come back at any moment, david became his own test subject. I started conducting Laboratory Research on my samples, going through all my medical data. I thought a drug had never been used for it before might work and i decided to try it on myself. It was a major break through. Hes now been in remission for four years. David said his perseverance was inspired by his mothers own battle with cancer. My mom was amazing, in not just finding Silver Linings in problems but also creating Silver Linings. To take a terrible situation and create something positive out of it. She instilled that in me. She lost herr battle with brain cancer. Davids battle continues. The drug that im on thats saving my life was now tried in a few other patients helping them. So were fighting with everything we have.
