His excellency the Viceroy arrived at Lahore on Friday morning, and left for Dehra Dun on Saturday afternoon. In between the arrival and the departure there was a crowded programme of events, including the reception of His Excellency by leading officials at the railway station and by leading officials and some prominent non-officials on the grounds of Government House, a garden party at Shalimar Gardens given by the members of the Chiefs’ Association, at which an address was presented to His Excellency, an informal visit to the Fort and personal interviews between His Excellency and certain “representatives of the various communities”. The only two items in the programme that were of interest and importance to the people were clearly the garden party at the Shalimar Gardens, or rather the speech which His Excellency made on the occasion, and the interviews he granted to certain prominent citizens, and it is about these that we say a few words. We have not before us at the time of writing a complete list of the persons who were invited to see His Excellency; nor do we know whether His Excellency did see all or even many of those most worth seeing. Judging from the manner in which our officials have almost invariably acquitted themselves on similar occasions in the past, it is too much to hope that they made no mistake on this occasion. Why should His Excellency have been afforded an opportunity of meeting “the representatives of the various communities” instead of the representatives of the various sections of opinion and schools of thought? It is not the communities whom he came thus early to see, but the mentality of the people with which he presumably came to make himself familiar. Of the communal mind he must have known something already, and he might have waited for a little while before he knew more.
