A Garda Armed Support Unit should be permanently based in Sligo - that's the view of Fine Gael Councillor Thomas Walsh, who will raise the matter at today's monthly meeting of Sligo County Council.
Councillor Walsh says a serious incident occurred in Sligo two weeks ago, involving two serious assaults and an arson attack on a vehicle and a house.
He claims it took over half an hour for the Armed Support Unit based in Ballyshannon to arrive in Sligo, while another unit was also dispatched from Galway to assist.
