December 15, 2020 Canadian research centre Kemitek has independently verified Loop Industries’ patented Gen II depolymerisation technology, which allows waste PET and polyester fibre to be recycled into virgin-quality PET made from 100 per cent recycled content. Loop commissioned Kemitek (formerly Oleotek), a not-for-profit College Centre for Technology Transfer specialised in the fields of green chemistry and chemical process scale-up, to validate the technology. The Kemitek team was on site at Loop’s Terrebonne, Quebec facilities for 16 days to verify each step of the technology at Mini-Pilot (25 L reactor) and Pilot scales (6000 L reactor) from feedstock (post-consumer waste PET) to final purified monomers dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) and monoethylene glycol (MEG).
