Eikestadnuus spoke to Dr Bryan Maritz from the department of Biodiversity and Conservation Biology at the University of the Western Cape to find out how and why snakes are important to the ecosystem.
“In the world of snake biology there is a lot of outrageous misinformation, and many claims regarding what we know about snakes that are largely unsubstantiated. Our research at UWC is starting to provide a scientific basis for understanding basic snake biology, including what snakes actually eat.
“Our work has already identified some interesting bits of information including (A) that several groups of snakes frequently consume other snakes or members of the same species, and that (B) you can actually use social media to measure snake diets.
