Might take a few days to get it for you independent bookshops often very good at getting it for the next day that's right I can certainly get things next. Are I not only see we didn't want to yeah absolutely but yes I can get things in quickly so if there's a book that you really want and you're thinking well you know if I order it online it might not get here before Christmas you definitely would be able to get it for people before Christmas I'm going to kick my last August tomorrow and then I'll give people a few days to elect Yeah yeah yeah I've been bailed out in a few previous Christmases by by independent bookshops love always very grateful for it I'm going to check my selection into the mix server itself my 2 pens and a pedophile on these occasions. Always like every Christmas to dip into what I think is the quintessential children's Christmas book it's the box of delights by John Mace field who is poet laureate I think at the time that he brought it. Was published in 1935 lots of people will become aware of the box of delights I guess from the 19 Eighty-Four T.V. Adaptation to people of my. Years was a pivotal moment at lots of our childhoods that's certainly how I discovered the actual book but it set at Christmas it's about K. Harker a young boy called K. Harker who is on his way home from boarding school where he meets. A rather eccentric old chap called Cole holding a Punch and Judy man who entrusts into case possession the actual box of delights it's just a tiny wooden box but when it's opened it gives you the power to become really small to fly or indeed to or to travel back to well various fantastical realms in days gone by it's just. Lovely romantic magical book it's absolutely the ancestor of Harry Potter and all manner of modern children's books and I can't recommend it highly enough and the version I've got some lovely illustrations by Quentin Blake in it as well. It's been a pleasure thank you so much for coming in this evening thank you very much for having me 3 lovely pleasure we'll do it again in the new year sometime if you go that would be great thank you lovely any events coming up at the book corner as well they're worth mentioning is it very much all about Christmas and all about Christmas at the moment but in the new Yeah I'll be starting to plan some. I've got quite a few Christmas traditions that never work traditions in your household as well so I'll start reading these out keep them rolling over in my direction. Is Tom White's . Whole. Mud. Was loaded with a. Good. Of her food bowl it's good. As good. As. And you share my enthusiasm for the box of delights. Delights you're there to do did you come to it via the T.V. Series. And D.V.D. Even I missed it the 1st time around oh well you would have been were you even born in 1984 Sarah asked How do you weigh the cost on since I refused to delay things by lighting a. That's impossible if they want to read. It's a terrific series I always try to watch the box of delights T.V. Show every Christmas Christmas it's got to go on yeah I know it tried to read a bit of the book as well the got with me tonight but I haven't I haven't started the box of delights T.V. Series yet builds up to Christmas Eve doesn't that I know yeah if you have time where you can watch an episode a day well yeah Christmas is almost in like you do real time then isn't it yeah absolutely it's great. I can do a shameless plug here because the soundtrack to the box of delights has just been released on CD. Out of the way wonderful atmospheric music composed by Roger Lim from the B.B.C. Radio phonic workshop and I thought I'm going to I'm going to play a bit of that on tomorrow night's program because you know if you if you can play a bit of the soundtrack of the box of delights on the radio on the 20th of December when can you delighted to say that Roger Lim himself is going to join us as well on the. Way we're. Still got right Christmas traditions that you don't really do that your families have never really done because I mentioned earlier on turkey I've never eaten turkey when I was a kid it was always. You know you're saying the support was always on oh yeah Turkey was too expensive and it was Turkey's a huge when I was there was only really like me and my parents and my gran and me aunt and uncle we weren't going to eat a whole turkey between us which I guess is why people end up of in Turkey sandwiches and Corey for weeks afterwards but we never had a turkey so I will happily up some more of these I have got right I let me scroll down the list here because there was tons of them on the Facebook what's let me get this right. Yeah no turkey for Christmas Christmas dinner with. Always in the evening. And it was usually stay this was because my parents love to go to the poor but lunch time well I'm going to have you know it doesn't Yeah and this was this was back before pubs did food on Christmas Day time when pubs were only open for a few hours at lunch and maybe in the evening if you were lucky I remember in certainly in. The in the ninety's it might even have been in the Northeast struggling to find a pope that was open on Christmas Day. Definitely in the evening it was very hard to find anywhere to go usually social clubs Yeah or whether I want to wandering about like phoning phoning around. I mean what you did. For 3 think just to get out of there was a house full of. Yeah. We never had Christmas crackers on the table because the dog would hide behind the city and partake. Our one day I had a brainwave and I removed the crack for all the crap. We just had. So that way we could still wear the silly hats and tell the daft jokes without the dog being scared. Also does anybody else still locate the wishbone in the turkey and you hold one end and somebody else holds the other. Gets hold of the biggest bit makes a wish Yeah Yeah Yeah that's yeah you do that with a chicken as well yeah. Thank you for that right keep these rolling over in my direction you've got Christmas a payout we do yeah we do yeah we've got 3 songs and we were talking about this through the day well we've got one that's kind of like I'll be in Jolly we've got one. It's a deep and thoughtful and one that's why I mean I would say she's less than a. Box of Christmas so yeah yeah I would get all of the troops rolled in 3 so. The 3 songs that you're doing in the studio all from the pay you've got all of those yet you have on display on B.B.C. . That's right I tell you what if I stick a record on you come to play live after that stops the living I'm going to play sleigh you to just because I love the contrariness of playing a slight song is a Merry Christmas I have read all of this it's that. Slate on B.B.C. T.V. The sound of John in Skelton greens youth face just that mentioned on the Facebook or Dave Hill from Slate on the programme a few weeks ago it was lovely. 95 I found a big Freeview 72. On the other one B.B.C. Sounds that I got paid pal that here in the studio you could to perform live. To go smash him was going to do for his 1st song is called streets on it it's about rules street you know. Riyad house we honest I am where you live there anyone who likes to drink and you of I mean and. We make a bi annual tradition go to a new year and there's a couple of people I've met a couple of homeless people over the people so it's kind of based around the laws and all the pull down this would be the raucous drinking song that you mention you . Are right it's all yours. Along through the king on. My blog is strong. With the princess. In a matter of. Wanting a real bed for. The play a strong. Word sorely. There was a place to. Lead Fabulous stuff peg Powell up performing life here on B.B.C. 2 days that's mostly a ripple of county cricket applause. Thank you so much from my new Christmas Eve. Which is called. This Christmas time there are brackets involved as well there. You go. Christmas time close bracket. We'll do another live I'm going to put a song by Martin. Thank . You have. Spent. So. Much clock we've . Got. A busy day zzzzz. You going to. Say oh you can sit there if you like but I will shut up there and then I'll play another one then we'll do another life I don't mind you go play by the free and easy on the show just like improvise a small just my approach to radio and just see where it goes don't start don't go and study released every year or so you know diminish. Things like that then turn it into a bit of jazz guitar. You know where. You're going to start. Going to sleep straight into my night time D.J. Going to about a good. Spot for Shane around $95.00. D.A.P. Sang out of everybody radio about. Here till 10 o'clock. Some wonderful music lined up. Power here in studio Sara. And hey bags on the violin. Sounded really smooth. About going. Right Christmas traditions that you didn't really do you know I was waiting for this I thought Is anybody out there going to say we didn't open our presents on Christmas morning. I know Rafer has been in touch we only opened one present on Christmas morning which meant there was plenty of incentive to help with the launch which would be served at about 2 o'clock 1400 hours then a pause for the Queen's speech that come back to the Queen's speech. Christmas pudding followed then we opened our presents while eating Christmas cake with white in the Dail cheese the whole day how structure try it. Is a suggestion may not be structured as some. I know got made. Any attempt to delay present opening beyond about 9 o'clock in the morning oh yeah I want it all done and dusted by then otherwise I would have solved until the middle of July absolutely always runnable for something. Stupid. Yeah oh yeah and then has just pointed out there comes a point in your life where usually around the time when you discover that you can go out and get drunk on Christmas if it comes a point in your life when you're up. To open your present. For make it over the age of about 70 you don't know where he's. Going to cut open your. Christmas morning oh yeah I'm good. I've done it on Christmas Eve before I become you know Christmassy feel right about Iraq the president it looks like at the bar there is a Waco park. The cellar taped together as strange disparate angles lovely right keep these relegated so things like Christmas traditions that were never Christmas traditions we never watch the Queen's speech. Never watched the Queen's speech if it was it was treated with a certain degree of irreverent disdain by most of them are you so blind you should go you know they get. Wed's top of the top of the Pops would have been on before the Queen's speech I think he had like some of that comes in here. Yeah yeah I know what's top of the Pops all yet center and yeah it is. Completely. Right let me play if I play a couple of trucks a year at the you get em to do one of them I want to focus on the least I really want to play this because this is an album that I listen to I went out walking upon the most on a Friday after I don't know I was a Friday afternoon I said it's only me that would know really whenever I tweeted about it was Friday afternoon at most of the news and you see where I'm now he made any threats and yeah it is your fault for Chanelle edge over destruction it was Friday afternoon and I listened to this album as I was wandering around and it's it's an album about the night it's called Night scapes by Dee Roth on just a lovely instrumental album but as I was listening to it and walking around the North York Moors the sun began to set by the end of the walk it was I was in complete darkness tramping about to the car windows mobile late and it was just the perfect synthesis of music and Sky atmosphere so I'm going to play this is from from the album might scapes it's the opening track this is the midnight bell. Everyone's noting appreciatively here in the studio that is D. Ruff thought all wrote H. Ad and yeah it's called the midnight bell and it kind of go straight into the next truck I have been here before all. This from new album called night sky just come on clay pipe music a lovely thing it is to write it is B.B.C. . 95 B. Online B.B.C. Sounds I got paid Paolo here in the studio everybody OK yeah you can do for us we've got a version. Obviously this Christmas carol Well it was originally it's pulling back. The busiest time of the year for him but he always likes to take time out of his busy schedule to talk to the children of Teesside County Durham and North Yorkshire. I've just been wrapping up some Christians for lots of girls and boys who been very helpful Lish Yeah Mike Cox and Sumter close Christmas Eve morning on B.B.C. Tees. Was All right 1st of all at Desmond back I'm the Israelites which I listened to the south to new and thought I'll play that on the radio tonight and then it reminded me of singing that particular song Black and White in our school assemblies there up there are many reggae songs that get sung in school assemblies are there certainly weren't in 1978 when I definitely did if I was in grade how big a British reggae from Greyhound to black and white. Scene if he were in double figures by the time box of delights Kaibab Sarah Well that was in your case obviously as you know there was yes and we said not reggae but we used to all day less streets of London as well tell streets of London I did a full programme on some that pop songs in school assemblies because I'm used by Al Gore got some on his upper arm scale as well mourning is broken as Oxley yet is it like you know bless a Mrs mold her my music teacher at school was a fine pianist but she couldn't quite much the work that Rick Wakeman did on custody so that's when. You know you set a fairly He set the ball if you want me to make a. Small herd on over. There I always say hello to a few people here Sydney small piece of scaling tune again south drop you a line for the 1st time on your new show I'm at right you could be all blue in here yeah I mean the South of France for Chris. Yes. I've been in. The worse and worse I've been invited by a friend to spend Christmas with. A couple of days early to spend time. Nicely bringing me to my point B. And B. That I'm staying out doesn't have a T.V. But I've got you on my phone and I'll be with you for the Jew ration Oh I feel a bit bad about Bruno can we rescind that vote here I go. Backwards but yeah. It. Has officially retracted. So. I missed the 1st hour of the show but very much enjoying peg piled up on the program tonight we never had turkey when I was growing up either it was usually chicken although one year we had goose. For you never have porting either always thought it was a bit sickly after all that very. Hot and cold with Christmas party your mom has made some Christmas cake she has since response cake yeah we crushing this yeah I think oh yeah I mean your life with yep about the knife and everything about the dead serviettes. Heart I mean it's all be Christmas Card Yeah well I could. Be Christmas I told you the thing didn't know that it was the tradition that you know family manana Sylvia said you couldn't make your Christmas cake in November because somebody would die. So my mom asked her where to look 1st to December to make the cake but she has to make a cake every year because it's beautiful is that the case of I won't make the Christmas cake now we could all be gone by the time we get to eat it probably yeah yeah yeah. She was a strange woman she kept a pig in the loft you in the war summary. Function this is. Going to fast. Enough when you. Are wrong I think all of this is not right hang on ever has been in touch as well as over on the Facebook we had tree presence. Oh Christmas cake. It was a fairly heavy hit that I dropped wasn't it appalling. We have tree presents says these are small silly presents put on the tree at my parents' house and then opened after a Boxing Day dinner in the evening. Which means that you still got something to look forward to we probably put even more effort into buying these than we do the main presence again I O's no way on God's green earth I could have waited until Boxing Day to open some Christmas presents that is ludicrous. Thank you Nigel for pointing out the Fairfield pub was always open Christmas Day. You want to go if you're stuck. Climbing the walls busy. Of Christmas cake of the dove or a. Rare. I was forced to write thank you letters to made it's Boxing Day I get you you can call me out on Grateful wretch if you like I don't think I've ever written a thank you letter in my life no nor do you think so no. Just next time you see said relatives this is a middle of September so thanks for the Christmas present last year. But there's no need to make things formal I don't think you thank you for all of the so yeah I do want to contribute Christmas traditions that you just never bothered with in your house that would be splendid Thank you. Oh Brian said Brian Barnes OK. Music promoter Brian bards a fine musician himself you know right down there is cheering and. He is on on the scroll down a bit after I had his tweet a 2nd ago and I've lost it now where's it gone don't talk amongst yourselves that we go on a rare occasion I missed your show. I don't I don't listen after the. Leave of me jetting off to sunnier climes for the next 2 weeks seem like it's Christmas holidays doesn't it don't you. Have the time say hello to. Mags for me I'm looking forward to hearing that are not our field but every said not what it. Is not to leave his dog. His accordions in hospital. Or the accordion is not well either yeah yeah cause does that mean we. Play on these tracks Oh right. There was. It was a night it's well wasn't it I thought it might be Christmas so yeah I thought it was regarded. Good long hours are they fixable do you think and then can they be repaired so might be that because they really didn't Stroman maybe they're very happy that Blimey we're sighing and seems. To. Think it is a somebody opened a bottle or something and they studio is all I can smell is. Chris is going to look around you know you know be able to drive oh yeah so you know. Right if I stick another record on the game to do another live what do you. Do you know I'll say hello to because I'm going to tie this together don't worry I'm not just being I don't big on structured I'll say hello to Mr Daniel. Tweeted in. Tuning in. Tuning into B.B.C. Admittedly he says not the most obvious choice given that I mean Norfolk. That's all right we can build a global audience here we've got a bloke listening in the south of France we've got a bloke listening in all for going to 12 people until you so I told him if. The 1st truck came up was the night scapes truck that you played so I'm going to stick with you for the remainder of the. Disease so if you like this is probably going to be up your street as well because Pike corner or DIO which is the nom de plume of Martin Jenkins have done a free Christmas truck I think pound for this but I can't remember what that was what you're like I think that I think us look good in this I'm all. Pie corner or Dio or my beloved ghost box records got a new album coming out in the new year but this is a Christmas truck and this is Satan's little helper. Peikoff. And Satan this little helper and as Mr Daniel Way A points out the sleigh bells are an interesting addition on the truck yes. From the camp new Pike audio. Cone the audio is written PIO audio corner on the screen is going to fuse me it is definitely pike on the audio album coming out early in $29.00 days . Seems to very much like the night scapes album The D. Roth all night scapes album as well from which we played a bit thank you to. My accordions are fixable I think yeah we go less a little relieved applause for that at Bell and his accordions fixable in case you are worried I have 99 problems and my accordion reeds are warm. I don't even like one of the 99 problems all number one on the list I'm not sure which remains. To be a lie if the if the main problem in your life is your accordion reeds you are doing all right I think yeah. Thank you for that good luck good luck with your accordion reeds right we have got peg power here in the studio came to do one of the live ones I'm going to guess this is the title track from the Christmas he picked it is yeah we're actually with one member down today because an opus double bass player grim news was only an opinion piece and. Yeah this is why I say you know only. Yes it's involves being out on the streets. In though we're sailing again OK it's not Door to Door was sailing OK because it's a chilly old knives to be concerned about not too bad exactly always a base we're sailing. Best sailing.
