Hello, and welcome to our look ahead to what the papers will be bringing us tomorrow. With me are the chief Political Correspondent for the telegraph, christopher hope, and the deputy Political Editor for the guardian, jessica elgot. Lets start by going through some of tomorrows front pages. Lets begin with the telegraph. Customers Must Wear Masks in takeaways. The paper reports that cafes and takeaways with seating inside will be counted as shops in england, so masks will be compulsory and sitting down to eat food after purchasing wont be allowed. On the independent, a report into the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the arts, with mps warning the country could turn into a cultural wasteland. An exclusive in the guardian, revealing what the paper calls a mass failure of the test and trace system, especially in areas worst hit by coronavirus. The guardian says the system is failing to alert thousands of people who may have been exposed to the virus. Uk plans for winter quadruple whammy reads the front page of the i. The paper says number ten is preparing for a worst Case Scenario of another wave of covid 19, brexit disruption, a surge in flu, and flooding. On the front page of the times reports that two conservative mps on the intelligence Watchdog Committee and 1a ministers have accepted donations linked to russia. Records show that mps received tens of thousands of pounds in donations to either them or the constituency parties. Meanwhile, the daily mail reveals that the uk has handed £71 million to china mps have demanded an inquiry. The paper says some of the aid money was used to put chinese firms in competition with british counterparts. And on the front page of the Metro Kim Kardashian speaks out about husband kanye wests bipolar disorder. Shes described her husband as brilliant but complicated and asked people to be understanding, as the rapper launches his campaign for us presidency. And back to the times, lets get this Party Started with celebrations for liverpool tonight. After playing their final home game of the season, the Football Team was presented with the premier League Trophy at anfield their First League Title for 30 years. Quite a lot to get through, but lets begin. Once again, hello to christopher and jessica. Lovely to have you both back with us. Lets start with your newspaper, the guardian, jessica, and exclusive here, the headline says world beating trading system failing to alert thousands. Since its your newspaper, explain more about what this is . I dont think we can hear you right now, jessica. Lets go to christopher first, and hopefully jessicas sound will come back. Technical problems has always. This isa technical problems has always. This is a great story from the guardian. Their own figures here showing that below the top level line of quite a high tracing system, there are some big issues locally. So you havejust 40 of at risk people contacted by the test and trace scheme. Youll know of course that if you do say youve got coronavirus, then theres a big effort to find out who you been talking to and who youve been nearin been talking to and who youve been near in the past few days or so. And it shows real problems in some parts of the country. I think christophers now frozen up as well. Jessica, are you back with us now . think im back now. 0k, jessica, are you back with us now . think im back now. Ok, so one works and what doesnt. Do you want to pick up from there, as christopher was explaining about the story . So i think we know that you need to be able to trace about 80 of contacts for track and trace to be work, and that means they can contact the vast majority of people that an infected person has been in touch with. But we found out in this investigation that the rate is actually a lot lower than that in some of the really key areas where the virus is worse than others. So in luton, that rate is about 47 , the rate is still only about 65 , blackburn, one of the key areas of worry for the government, one that seems to be the most likely to potentially face and other local lockdown is 54 . And in the four highest areas there, they estimate 5500 people who havent been contacted by tracers. So thats a worry. Thats a huge worry, christopher, are you there . You are, great. Thank you. This is the perils of working from home, but do you wa nt to of working from home, but do you want to react which is cassette . Some startling figures in terms of the number of people, thousands we are talking about do whatjessica said was mike that means the potential spread, doesnt it . Said was mike that means the potential spread, doesnt mm does, and if you look at the areas the article is talking about, lester, rochdale, luton these are areas with high bay populations, and i weather weather thats part of it, they cant get into these groups, and whether this has a bearing on why we are seeing bigger rates amongst the pa any community is fascinating. I do think it is difficult, the government isnt really giving this level of detail as far as really giving this level of detail as farasi really giving this level of detail as far as i know, i think the guardian has done well to get it. I wonder whether policymakers are trying to make this information more available to everyone. Is it fair to just blame bam ee communities for not being contactable . It says local leaders are demanding more control over the tracing operation. Is there a problem in the way this is actually being run from the top . Im not blaming at all the bame communities, im trying to say that these are areas where they might live. I certainly blame the government, i wouldnt blame the people who are trying to be tracked. It is not their fault if people cant get to them or arent speaking to them. I certainly think it is an issue for the government. Sorry, i misunderstood you there. Jessica, coming back to the wider issue of this the government has talked about this scheme being world beating. We look at other countries that have managed very efficiently to runa that have managed very efficiently to run a track and trace, like south korea. What are your thoughts on what maybe has gone wrong . korea. What are your thoughts on what maybe has gone wrong . I think obviously theres been teething problems with the system, and some of the explanations for that is that there hasnt been enough consideration given in some areas to the language barriers, so people might be getting unknown calls from numbers they dont recognise, potentially with someone speaking and saying things they dont understand, and therefore they are unlikely to respond to the tracing. And thats not that persons fault at all, but it is something that needs to be considered in the way the system is implemented. And every new system will have teething problems, but it is lavishly a significant cause for concern that there are so many people slipping through the net. Over to your newspaper, christopher, the Daily Telegraph, customers Must Wear Masks in takeaways. This is about the new rules that come in on friday about where you have to wear a Face Covering and when. Its all confusing, what has your newspaper found out about how this will be rolled out . We got an early site about what the new law will be when it comes into force on friday. The big issue has been most recently about whether you can wear a Face Covering and all shops from friday, and how that applies to takeaways and how that applies to takeaways and sandwich shops. And we dug down into the detail and got a good story here about the fact that if you buy food from the counter, then you cant sit down to have the shop, you must put a mask on. Theres been some confusing not least because our leaders dont appear to want to practice what they preach. We see rishi sunak serving food without a mask on, then he wears one. Michael gove, who is very hawkish about masks or Face Coverings, wont wear them at all by all accounts, maybe because he wears glasses like ido and maybe because he wears glasses like i do and they steam up. They could bea i do and they steam up. They could be a personal choice, not for any other reason. Hopefully there will be some clarity. The problem with these rules is that we are complex people, and often the rules and laws dont really apply to every single possible permutation of what could happen. And thats why you have confusion setting in. But the police will be enforcing it, shop workers arent happy about that because they dont want to enforce it. Police wa nt to dont want to enforce it. Police want to stop crimes, not deal with her brows about masks. There will be some conflict on friday. Jessica, the Daily Telegraph is quoting cressida dick, who says she hoped people would be shamed into leaving stores if they didnt comply with the rules. So she believes that people will just the rules. So she believes that people willjust not wear them because theyre embarrassed, if people give them a hard stare or whatever. I was on the tube earlier today and i would say 50 of people we re today and i would say 50 of people were not Wearing Masks and didnt seem to care as i gave them a hard stare. What do you think about the enforcement issue here . Youve made me doubt myself, i was about to say im a bit of a mask optimist. I do think that by and large, people want to follow the rules, they dont want the virus to spread, and they also wa nt the virus to spread, and they also want a route to get on with their daily lives, therefore if masks are the way to do that, than i would imagine that a lot of people are fairly blase about complying with it, youll always get the odd person who wants to make a point in shops or cause difficulties for shop staff. But if people are politely reminded by someone at the till to put on a mask, they might say, goodness me, i left it at home, rather than get so agitated that police have to be called. Im sure we will see exceptions, but by and large i tend to agree a bit with the Health Secretary matt hancock when he said that he believes people will just want to comply with this new rule. We will see. Christopher, from masks to tuxes, the front page of the Times Newspaper has just come m, the Times Newspaper has just come in, soi the Times Newspaper has just come in, so i havent gone through it all in great detail, but theres a picture of pry mr borisjohnson with a director ofan picture of pry mr borisjohnson with a director of an Energy Company that made donations to conservative mps. Ministers bankrolled by donors linked to russia. Tell us more about that story. This is day three of these russia report stories. The intelligence and Security Committee finally published its report on tuesday into russia, having given it to borisjohnson tuesday into russia, having given it to Boris Johnson on 17 tuesday into russia, having given it to borisjohnson on 17 october last year, and the work started back in 2017. So theres been some while before weve seen this report. This is about the influence which is worrying the government, worrying the Security Services about russians and their involvement in the uk society. This man is a donor to the tory party, a well known donor whose given money to two members of the newly formed intelligence and Security Committee, Mark Prichard and teresa failures, but they werent there when this was created. He denied any wrongdoing at all, and nothing to suggest there was any wrongdoing. Hes been well declared in the housings of parliament, theyve gone through all these filings and found it lots of money going into many tories it seems, tory ministers and tory mps, and theyre saying, look, this is happening, we live in a democracy, politicians can take money from wherever they want as long as its not against the law. And its not against the law. It adds to this feeling that russian people who used to be in russia and are now living in britain are heavily involved in oui in britain are heavily involved in our society. That was an issue raised in this report on tuesday. Jessica, if theres nothing wrong with this, then why is it front page news . I think as christopher said, there doesnt seem to be anything illegal about whats going on, these donations were declared in the usual way. But the report did raise questions about the way that influential russians with close links to Vladimir Putin and plenty of money were kind of intertwined in british politics and having influence on business, on putting their money and keeping their money here where potentially they might be hiding it in some way. This doesnt suggest anyone has done it in the times, but it was raised in the report. And also their links to senior politicians. One example that comes up senior politicians. One example that comes up time and again is the wife of the expert Vladimir Putin minister who paid a very large sums of money to have a tennis match with borisjohnson at one of money to have a tennis match with Boris Johnson at one of the tory fundraising balls. Theres nothing technically wrong with it, but i think people have questions they wa nt think people have questions they want to ask about why people with such close links to the russian president , someone who borisjohnson says the uk is highly suspicious of and is suspicious of russias motivations and potential interference and aspects of our democracy, why that person is able to get so close to the Prime Ministerand to get so close to the Prime Minister and paying for it. Christopher, before we move onto the daily talking about tennis matches is the Prime Minister actually good at tennis . Im told he is. Ive never played him, he doesnt actually play with an old wooden tennis racket. Nowadays his rackets are quite big ones with strong strings, and he plays with an old wooden racket. Hes certainly competitive. But i do think that john perko beat him six love, sex love, sex love, so we cant that good. No wimbledon but thats a good score to learn of. From russia, we moved to china, the front page of the daily mail, the headline saying uk hands £71 million of aid to china. Saying mps demanded an inquiry last night as it was revealed that £71 million of taxpayer cash was handed to super rich china in just one year. Its normal for the uk super rich china in just one year. Its normalfor the uk to super rich china in just one year. Its normal for the uk to send aid to countries, whether its china or india so why is this a big story right now . Because aid money is political, because the fact that weve now been giving more from the home office budget, the prison budget to other countries, and we have our own people that need money here is a clinical issue, particularly for right wing newspapers, the daily mail being one. With the aid of china, we were told that stops happening in 2011, but it hasnt. There was other money given in 2016, around £47 million. This latest in a series of inexplicable ways we are giving money to china, the money was spent at 4. 8 million on Training Primary School teachers, 20,000 on fighting illegal wildlife. Now 35 million in Training Primary School teachers, we are facing a problem in britain this september when we cant get the schools open may be because of covid 19, but 5 million to china to help them is strange and annoying to some people that this is carrying on, and this is where the story it comes from. Its kind of like where we say about the annual report. The annual report has other things that have been pulled out, according to the daily mail. I dont know if you know any more about this or not, but it says that this report revealed that the department for International Development has investigated a large number of sexual abuse cases involving its staff, for example . Its not something i know anything about the specifics of, but obviously this kind of brings back into view the case about aids that were subjected to such gruesome exposes case about aids that were subjected to sucii gruesome exposes a case about aids that were subjected to such gruesome exposes a few years ago involving oxfam and some other charities which led to significant embarrassment for a number of charities, about the way that senior staff there had behaved. So im sure that this is something that if it has been investigated, it would be interesting to hear about it. Christopher, are you a football fan . Yes, iam. Christopher, are you a football fan . Yes, i am. Good, Perfect Timing for the front page of the guardian, the final, final whistle. A lovely photo of a young boy with his liverpool shirt on, and he is lifting a replica trophy. Lets get your take on this, obviously. Its deeply emotional because on the last date of the cop before it seated overin date of the cop before it seated over in the 80s last century, we waited 40 years for tonight. And tonight my team, liverpool, were crowned champions. We beat chelsea 53, crowned champions. We beat chelsea 5 3, and it was absolutely marvellous. Im very excited, even more excited to talk to about on the tv, but im quite excited. A long wait, and believe me, they are delighted. Can i ask how you celebrated that news . Because its obviously a very strange football season, isnt it . I celebrated five days ago dust games ago in my dressing room. Its very emotional because the stadium was empty, they played crowd noise, as you might have seen in the highlights, the fireworks went off. There are some fa ns fireworks went off. There are some fans outside the ground and they should not be there because they are trying to observe social distancing. But the overwhelming emotion is one of relief. Finally, we can put one over on our rivals, manchester united. And we are one behind their record of 20, at 19. Thats for next season. Record of 20, at 19. Thats for next season. Jessica, whats your reaction to that . Do you support liverpool . Im actually a leeds united fan, so youve got to people massively celebrating tonight because leeds played their final game, winning 4 0, just having secured promotion to the premier league de congratulations and. For the first time in 16 years. Its a massive night for us as well, so we can share some point, herjoy. On that happy note, so we dont and with an argument, it was lovely to have you both back here again and hopefully we can talk to you about the papers. Thats it for the papers this hour. Goodbye for now. Good evening. We start with West Bromwich albion, who will play premier League Football next season. A 2 2 draw with Queens Park Rangers has ensured they finish in the second automatic promotion place behind the champions leeds. They fell behind at the hawthorns tonight, but turned it round with goals either side of the break from Grady Diangana and callum robinson. Qpr did manage an equaliser, but the point was enough in the end for the baggies to seal their return to the premier league. Brentford could have pipped west brom to that automatic promotion spot but they lost 2 1 at home to barnsley. Clarke oduor with the stoppage time goal. The win means barsnsley escape relegation, although they could still go down to league one if wigans appeal against their 12 point penalty for going into adminstration is successful. These are tonights championship results in full. Awinfor a win for derby county, you can see ba rnsleys a win for derby county, you can see barnsleys when there is well, cardiff city beating relegated hole, and they will be in the playoffs. Leeds threshing charlton, a result that relegates trenton. Luton surviving on the final day with that win against blackburn rovers. Big win against blackburn rovers. Big win for millwall, Nottingham Forest agonisingly miss out on the playoffs after being beaten for one at home by stoke city. Swansea in the playoffs with their win at reading 4 1. This is what it means in terms of the final championship table. Leeds and west brom promoted, brentford, fulham, cardiff and swa nsea brentford, fulham, cardiff and swansea in those playoff places. Nottingham forest miss out on the on goal difference, and this is how things look at the bottom. It is whole and wig on, and cheltenham relegated. If wigan are successful in their appeal against that 12 point deduction for going into administration, then it will be ba rnsley administration, then it will be barnsley that go down to league 1. But as it stands it is though three. Look at luton pulling off that remarkable survival with that win in their final remarkable survival with that win in theirfinal game. The champions liverpool have marked lifting the premier League Trophy with a thrilling 5 3 win over chelsea at anfield, which leaves Frank Lampards side needing a point on the final day of the season to guarantee champions League Football. Trent Alexander Arnold scored a stunning free kick in the first half it was 3 0 before chelsea pulled a goal back late in the first half, and they were right in it when Christian Pulisic made it 4 3 with over a quarter of an hour to play. But Alex Oxlaide Chamberlain wrapped up all three points for liverpool
