The airline was trying to secure a bailout loan from the uk government, but its efforts to survive have been complicated by a slump in air travel because of the coronavirus outbreak. Flybe called itself europes Largest Regional Airline serving 56 airports and carrying eight million passengers a year. It employs 2,500 people whose jobs are now in doubt. Our reporter ben thompson is at Birmingham Airport in the english midlands. This area would normally be busy with passengers. 12 flights due to be operated by flybe which have been cancelled, to places like paris, guernsey, dusseldorf, stuttgartand amsterdam. One passenger told me his entire trip hangs in the balance because he was flying from here in birmingham to amsterdam to pick up another flight from amsterdam to singapore and then singapore to australia. And because you dont have any answers that means you cant try to look into booking a new flight, you cant look into what to do next. How frustrating is it for you this morning . Really frustrating. But i do know there are flights leaving here at five oclock this afternoon, which will get me to amsterdam and on to singapore. I am going to have to try to reclaim the original fare back in the future. There was a loan that was meant to be in the pipeline of up to £100 million. That clearly hasnt materialised and on top of that you have had coronavirus. To what extent has coronavirus. Virgin atlantic, which led the consortium that took control of flybe, says this was about coronavirus, and the entire industry has been hit badly because people do not want to travel at the moment. They are worried about coming into contact with people who have the virus and they are worried about having to be quarantined or get stuck abroad or whatever, so coronavirus is a factor but you have to remember this was an airline that was in trouble beforehand and really the government was going to help out. There was talk of this large lawn that would have kept them going through the difficult winter period until bookings picked up during the summer until bookings picked up during the summerand until bookings picked up during the summer and that hasnt materialised and you have to ask why. We were hearing worries about norwegians profits. Other airlines concerned. Lots of them are having to ground aircraft. They have had to cancel bookings. My mum passed away when i was 15 so my grandmother looked after me and then i found out that she had grandmother looked after me and then ifound out that she had Breast Cancer also and that gave me the kick to have more. Is that correct . Yes. It was kind of like a perfect storm. There was a gap in the market. I was at an age when i was old enough to understand things. I had always wanted a business but i didnt get it. There was no overheads. How did you get into Urban Outfitters and a source . They contacted me through instagram. Social media. I was like, is they contacted me through instagram. Social media. Iwas like, is this real . Instagram played a big role. The inspiration for your designs, where does that come from . My advice is get yourself a mentor who will help you develop. Now the mentor i have is really helping me to look at how i need to change as my roles change and what i need to do in terms of providing that leadership to the organisation. The mentor doesnt have to come from a Charity Background or understand the charity or the business. The importance is that the chemistry as they are with the mentor and you feel able to trust them and you are able to feel vulnerable with them because you are not going to benefit if you are not able to share your fears. I will talk to my mentor about the priorities i have at the moment, the number of challenges i am working through, at the mentor will help me boil down to how i as the chief executive can make the most impact with the time i have.
