Our Asia Business team will bring us the details. And dr no even 007 is hit by the virus. We will look at what else is in the firing line. All that glitters. Well be chatting to the young entrepreneur who believes that bling is the thing. And as james bond has to pick another day to die with the postponement of the latest 007 film, we want to know if the threat of coronavirus will make you change your social plans are you avoiding going to the cinema or watching sport from your armchair rather than the stadium . Let us know just use the hashtag bbcworklife. Hello and welcome to worklife. We start with the struggling uk Airline Flybe it has collapsed into administration leaving flights cancelled and passengers around europe stranded. The airline was trying to secure a bailout loan from the uk government, but its efforts to survive have been complicated by a slump in air travel because of the coronavirus outbreak. Flybe called itself europes Largest Regional Airline serving 56 airports and carrying eight million passengers a year. It employs 2,500 people whose jobs are now in doubt. Our reporter ben thompson is at Birmingham Airport in the english midlands. This area would normally be busy with passengers. 12 flights due to be operated by flybe which have been cancelled, to places like paris, guernsey, dusseldorf, stuttgartand amsterdam. I really difficult time for passengers in what is one of flybes most busy hubs. One passenger told me his entire trip hangs in the balance because he was flying from here in birmingham to amsterdam to pick up another flight from amsterdam to singapore and then singapore to australia. That flight 110w singapore to australia. That flight now in doubt. He arrived at the airport last night and has no a nswe is airport last night and has no a nswers yet airport last night and has no answers yet about what happens next. Im going to book a flight for later today and try and get my money back on the travel insurance. I know you have been on the phone to your insurer for more than an hour this morning and still no answers. Onto Singapore Airlines for more than an hour. Nobody can speak english. I am going to try them again in a bit. And my travel insurance is due to phone me back, so. And because you dont have any answers that means you cant try to look into booking a new flight, you cant look into what to do next. How frustrating is it for you this morning . Really frustrating. But i do know there are flights leaving here at five oclock this afternoon, which will get me to amsterdam and on to singapore. I am going to have to try to reclaim the original fare back in the future. Those here are being handed information because it is worth remembering that unlike the collapse of thomas coke and monarch when the Civil Aviation authority had a big repatriation effort, this time is different, people will have to rely on travel insurance, if it is covered, and potentially claiming money back from credit or debit cards rather than widespread compensation that might have been the case for the collapse of other airlines. Airports around the country are very reliant on flybe services. They are in talks with other airlines to try to replace some of those services to make sure people can get to where they need to get too but it needs attention has turned to alternative son for places like birmingham that could mean the hs2, improving road and Rail Services rather than necessarily relying on airlines, but here a confused picture for many passengers with the news that flybe is officially in administration. Theo leggett is our Business Correspondent and hejoins me now. This is an airline that had been in financial difficulty for some time. Just a very good ago it was taken over by its current owners and they promised to put it back on a steady footing but clearly that didnt work. A few weeks ago without the airline had been brought back from the brink when a deal was done between those shareholders and the government and the government agreed to defer certain liabilities for the company, to review a air Passenger Duty and to talk about alone. There was a loan that was meant to be in the pipeline of up to £100 million. That clearly hasnt materialised and on top of that you have had coronavirus. To what extent has coronavirus. To what extent has coronavirus played a part in this . Virgin atlantic, which led the consortium that took control of flybe, says this was about coronavirus, and the entire industry has been hit badly because people do not want to travel at the moment. They are worried about coming into contact with people who have the virus and they are worried about having to be quarantined or get stuck abroad or whatever, so coronavirus is a factor but you have to remember this was an airline that was in trouble beforehand and really the government was going to help out. There was talk of this large lawn that would have kept them going through the difficult winter period until bookings picked up during the summer until bookings picked up during the summerand until bookings picked up during the summer and that hasnt materialised and you have to ask why. We were hearing worries about norwegians profits. Other airlines concerned. Lots of them are having to ground aircraft. They have had to cancel bookings. The air transport association said it wanted to give airlines scope to cancel flight without using their airport take off and landing slots. No region has said it cannot stand by its profits guidance that it issued in february and the reason for that is the impact of coronavirus on the kings and norwegian has been running at a loss for three years and it looks uncertain now. Thank you. We will have more on that story later. We will find out about passenger numbers in recent months. Lets take a look at some of the other stories making the news. Britain will miss its goal of net zero carbon by 2050 unless it finds a way to finance Nuclear Power stations. Thats according to a confidential letter written to the chancellor by the Nuclear Industry which has been seen by the bbc. Britains Nuclear Plants provide about 20 of uk electricity. All but one will be retired by the end of the decade. Lego plans to open 150 branded shops around the world in 2020, having opened the same amount last year. Thats despite tough Market Conditions for the toy industry which it says shrank 3 in 2019. Legos chief executive, niels christiansen, told the bbc that he wanted people to get their hands on bricks and be a part of the brand. New figures show the demand for Airline Travel and for air cargo this dropped in january despite that travel restrictions in china were not imposed until the end of that month. The numbers are a grim warning of the potenital size of the impact of the coronavirus on the airline industy. The pressure is on. Yeah, absolutely. The figures released show that this is the lowest monthly increase in passenger demand since april 2010 and remember that was the time of the volcanic ash crisis in europe that led to airspace closures, flight cancellations, you name it. What officials are seeing is that january is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of the impact that we are expecting to see on passenger traffic due to the coronavirus and those major travel restrictions in china did not begin until midway through the month, around the 23rd of january, but it has still been enough to cause the slowest traffic growth in nearly a decade, and this is something that the Aviation Industry is watching very closely as the weeks continue and we see more of these travel restrictions are the impact of them come to be and we will get a better understanding of how badly this is affecting the industry. Thank you very much indeed. The share prices have been hammered in recent weeks. Strong gains in japan and hong kong following the night before on wall street where the dial jumps following night before on wall street where the dialjumps following the news that us federal money is available to help to deal with coronavirus, 50 million available, so markets looking on the bright side for now, so lets see how long that lasts. The flybe story brings a lot of negative sentiment. Ryanair the flybe story brings a lot of negative sentiment. Rya nair and easyj et negative sentiment. Rya nair and easyjet shares out today, perhaps because investors are thinking they could pick up some flybe routes and British Airways shares down by nearly a percent. Coronavirus is hitting every area of business including entertainment. On wednesday the producers of the newjames bond movie announced the launch of the film is being shelved until later in the year. Samira hussain in new york has more. Daniel ks final appearance as james bond was due to hit screens in april but the release date has been pushed back seven months so fans of 007 will have to wait until november to see no time to die. The producers said they delayed the release after careful consideration and thorough evaluation of the global theatrical marketplace. The last bond film to can almost 900 million at worldwide box offices and some film analysts have suggested the coronavirus could wait 5 billion from global box offices, with many chinese cinema is already closed and revenues hit in south korea and italy. Time now for our daily look at some of the newspaper and website stories which have caught our eye. Joining me is bybreen samuels, Software Engineer and author. He story in the guardian that heads and councils are trying to get extra money for schools that are struggling. Thinking about the future workforce and so investment is really needed at this stage because we are in a competitive market, although britain has no left the eu we are still in competition with other countries around the world and as a result of that we have to make sure that we are keeping abreast of developments and changes and if there is an insufficient amount of funding going on at this early years stage and we will not be in a Competitive Position when they finish their schooling. Timing is everything, isnt it . This alliance of head teachers, school governors, councils and unions, lobbying the chancellor ahead of the budget, they want £5. 5 billion a year to help bring state schools up to standard. I have three children in state schools in this country, you have as well, and as pa rents we country, you have as well, and as parents we are always being asked to dip into our pockets, Parent Teacher association events, it is all about fundraising for schools. It is, but where does the responsibility lie . We have to go back to when David Cameron was Prime Minister and he went to the big society which meant that the state responsibility was shrunk and the responsibility was transferred onto the shoulders of everyday citizens who usually are the recipients of these services. When you have this tension, should the state actually be offsetting its responsibility to educate future generations . Which will then go on to feed into the economy. That is the argument that the chancellor is thinking i have a lot of areas where people want funding. We will see what he reveals on march the 11th. Responsibilities, employers responsible for their employees wellness. I love this. What it is telling us is that humanity is being brought back into the workplace, saw profits, obviously, have a place. There are many bottom lines. Finance being one of them. Health and well being of staff being another because without your stuff you do not have any productivity and without productivity you are not satisfying end users. It is notjust staff. It is staff in a good place mentally and physically. We are seeing a lot of Mental Health cases reported across the working field and asa reported across the working field and as a result of the suppliers are becoming far more responsible. They are recognising that there is a person in front of them instead of a job title. Somebody who does something. What people are looking at is literally worklife balance and thatis at is literally worklife balance and that is the integration of what their personal needs are as well as what their professional and career obligations are. Talking about a more holistic approach to employee well being in the corporate culture. That is the m. Yes. We are all in and we are trying to manage our state while we are in our working world so we can bring the best of ourselves in order to enhance the bottom line. Thank you very much. We appreciate you coming by. To interesting reads. Have a look if you have time. This still to come. John lewis has unveiled its full year results and, as expected, theyre not pretty. Following a brutal year on the whole of the high street, the retailer will pay its lowest bonus to its staff known as partners in nearly 70 years. Richard hyman is a retail analyst just take us through the numbers first. Isa is a poor performance was pretty well known although they have decided to do it in less detail. Until recently they released weekly sales figures for both the Department Stores and waitrose and over the past year they have been pretty poor, especially on the Department Store site. The real question for us all this morning was whether they were going to pay a bonus at all. In the circumstances, 296 is bonus at all. In the circumstances, 2 is probably pretty good, and it could have been a lot worse, zero. If you put this in context, forjohn lewis 2 bonus is hardly anything. Those of us who do not work forjohn lewis appreciate that their normally a lot more than that and it is an important part of their ethos. A lot more than that and it is an important part of their ethosm a lot more than that and it is an important part of their ethos. It is fundamental particularly since the key Competitive Edge thatjohn lewis lewis has its Customer Service, that is delivered by its star. If you ta ke is delivered by its star. If you take away part of their remuneration then your Customer Service levels are likely to be impacted and over the past few years is that bonus has gone down steadily we have been seeing a bit of that. It is a really difficult dilemma they have. Very difficult dilemma they have. Very difficult climate. Can they afford to pay the bonuses they have in the past. Clearly not. Does the john lewis model still work looking ahead . Looking ahead it definitely does still work but it cannot work on the way it has in the past so they need to embrace change and they need to do that quickly. Now the mentor i have is really helping me to look at how i need to change as my roles change and what i need to do in terms of providing that leadership to the organisation. The mentor doesnt have to come from a Charity Background or understand the charity or the business. The importance is that the chemistry as they are with the mentor and you feel able to trust them and you are able to feel vulnerable with them because you are not going to benefit if you are not able to share your fears.
