To Dozen people to sign up and join the reserve forces is something each of the services has invested a lot of time and money into over the years but what's it like to become a member of the elite reserve forces Dave Roberts went along to the Royal Marines reserve detachment in Plymouth to find out seeing awarded the coveted green beret is not easy it's well documented that it's one of the toughest courses to complete in the armed forces so I went to find out how reservists managed to gain that green and to find out what it's like in the Royal Marines was a once Corporal Neal has been a reservist for 12 years after leaving the regulars after a period of time you start to feel that you do miss it you miss the camaraderie big neck life really when you join the Royal Marines what would you expect to be totally honest after leaving the regulars and think about join the reserves wasn't 100 percent sure what was going to find when I got there when I joined I did realize that there are a lot of aspects of our Amal life which are very very similar to still being in the regular corps So even though it's only a part time thing for me now I. I still feel that I you know each do get a feeling of belonging still how difficult is it to get into the room where his was are the guys who come in especially if straight from civvy street they will go through the whole interview process the medicals the basic fitness tests and then from then on once they start reservist training it's over a period of weekends and Wednesday nights training periods but it's actually in a way it's harder for the guards to get through the physical side of it because they're not going through their everyday process because to command a training center and it's a lot on themselves to get motivated and get out then do the face to get that same standard as the regulars because all the tests at the end of their training are exactly the same as what the reg Marines go through one of the opportunities to deploy with regular forces like in the reserves there are a lot of opportunities every month the guys can get involved in you can do a full time reserve service contract with a regular unit and you could be deployed with them for 6 months to a year possibly longer on certain occasions there's always unit level exercises going on with the reserves whether that's at home and abroad there are a lot of opportunities how were you received as as a reservist going in with the regular very well because it is probably a bit easier for myself being an ex regular But the other guys from various are units were attached to the same meaning as me actually the guys here in the regular court didn't actually realize that most of us were reservists until a few weeks or months into the deployment purely because standards a trainer the same and you don't know any difference between a regular and a reservist ruins have a certain amount specialties can you still do in the reserves you can still undertake specialist training exactly the same as the regular corps of c. Most of the courses are condensed because of the guys who go to fit around their civilian work but the same opportunities. There and to be honest you can get more chance of to in on a reservist course than you have in the regulars is a good thing especially if regulars are leaving and thinking I want to be able to pursue any other specialization but that's not the case there as they can put their name down for anything or somebody wants to get involved join the Royal Marine Reserve find out more information what are the things they need to 1st of all consider themselves and then where do they go to do it I think the main thing is if being a reservist they can fit around their everyday life less a 1000000000 Jope because there's not really any point in going through the process of join in and then not be able to commit to anything the physical side of things they do need to come with just a basic level of fitness 1st they need to put the I was in beforehand don't need to be super fit because of the p.t.s. Will take them through progressive physical training but they've got to have the attitude that they need to go out there and do a lot of training on their own See they're not in that full time training environment so it a law is on themselves to get motivated that someone's thinking I fancy given the Royal Marines reserve a bit of a cut what should they do I think they should go to some recruitment events speak to guys are already in or they can go down to a local recruitment office and they'll give you all the information you need to know to make a decision on Dave Roberts Devonport for Forces Radio b f b s Thanks Dave and Dave was talking to Lance Corporal mail from our and Bristols Plymouth taps when you find out more about the Army and the Reserves online at Royal Navy and id.
