what he said today. >> i want to say to each of you simply and directly, i am deeply sorry for my irresponsible and selfish behavior i engaged in. i know people want to find out how i could be so selfish and so foolish. people want to know how i could have done these things to my wife, elin, and to my children. and while i have always tried to be a private person, there are some things i want to say. elin and i have started the process of discussing the damage caused by my behavior. as elin pointed out to me, my real apology to her will not come in the form of words. it will come from my behavior over time. we have a lot to discuss. however, when we sat we say to other will remain between the two of us. i am also aware of the pain my behavior has caused those of you in this room. i have let you down. i have let down my fans. for many of you, especially my friends, my behavior has been a personal disappointment. to those of you who work for me, i have let you down personally and professionally. i have made you question who i am and how i could have done the things i did. i am embarrassed that i have put you in this position. for all that i have done, i am so sorry. i have a lot to atone for. but there is one issue i really want to discuss. some people have speculated that elin somehow hurt or attacked me on thanksgiving night. it angers me that people would fabricate a story like that. elin never hit me that night or any other night. there has never been an episode of domestic violence in our marriage. ever. elin has shown enormous grace and poise throughout this ordeal. elin deserves praise, not blame. the issue involved here was my repeated irresponsible behavior. i was unfaithful. i had affairs, i cheated. what i did is not acceptable, and i am the only person to blame. i stopped living by the core values that i was taught to believe in. i knew my actions were wrong, but i convinced myself that normal rules didn't apply. i never thought about who i was hurting. instead, i thought only about myself. i ran straight through the boundaries that a married couple should live by. i thought i could get away with whatever i wanted to. i felt that i had worked hard my entire life and deserved to enjoy all the temptations around me. i felt i was entitled. thanks to money and fame, i didn't have far -- i didn't have to go far to find them. i was wrong. i was foolish. i don't get to play by different rules. the same boundaries that apply to everyone apply to me. i brought this shame on myself. i hurt my wife, my kids, my mother, my wife's family, my friends, my foundation and kids all around the world who admired me. i've had a lot of time to think about what i've done. my failures have made me look at myself in a way i never wanted to before. it's now up to me to make amends, and that starts by never repeating the mistakes i've made. it's up to me to start living a life of integrity. parents used to point to me as a role model for their kids. i owe all those families a special apology. i want to say to them that i am truly sorry. it's hard to admit that i need help, but i do. for 45 days, from the end of december to early february, i was in inpatient therapy receiving guidance for the issues i'm facing. i have a long way to go. but i've taken my first steps in the right direction. as i proceed, i understand people have questions. i understand the press wants me -- wants to ask me for the details of the times i was unfaithful. i understand people want to know whether elin and i will remain together. please know that as far as i'm concerned, every one of these questions and answers is a matter between elin and me. these are issues behind a husband and a wife. despite the damage i have done, i still believe it is right to shield my family from the public spotlight. they did not do these things. i did. my behavior was right for the media to follow. they staked out my wife and pursued my mom. whatever my wrongdoings, for the sake of my family, please leave my wife and kids alone. i owe it to my family to become a better person. i owe it to those closest to me to become a better man. that's where my focus will be. i have a lot of work to do, and i intend to dedicate myself to doing it t. part of following this path for me is budidhism, which my mother taught me at a young age. people probably don't realize it, but i was raised a buddhist, and i practiced my faith in childhood until i drifted away from it in recent years. buddhism teaches that creative things outside ourselves is an -- it teaches me to stop following every impulse and to learn restraint. obviously, i lost track of what i was taught. as i move forward, i will continue to receive help because i've learned that's how people really do change. starting tomorrow, i will leave for more treatment and more therapy. in therapy, i've learned the importance of looking at my spiritual life and keeping it in balance with my professional life. i need to regain my balance and be centered so i can say the things that are mo-- save the t are most important to me, my marriage and my children. that also means relying on others for help. i learned to seek support from my peers in therapy, and i hope someday to return that support to others who are seeking help i do plan to return to golf one day, i just don't know when that day will be. i don't rule out that it will be this year. when i do return, i need to make my behavior more respectful of the game. >> tiger woods in his own words. a lot to break down from today's highly >> well, campbell, good to be with you. it was never supposed to be a press conference, it was always a public statement. as we reported last night from people in his camp and people close to him, the words were largely written by tiger woods. that's not saying that they weren't shaped or refashioned in some sense by those who looked them over, but the message essentially came from woods to a very select audience of 40. obviously, he didn't entertain any questions, and when that central camera came out, we only saw the side angle, and we saw a number of people in the room, people who weren't going to be familiar with who was there. for example, amy reynolds formally of nike who is now with tiger woods, tiger's mother and his assistant, a couple long-time friends all in the room with woods. very choreographed and controlled. >> let me stop you there, just because we have these pictures up. a lot of people were wondering what had happened, and just for those who don't know, at a certain point during his press conference, one of the cameras went out, right, it broke? that's how we ended up with that side angle, just to give people a little context? >> that's correct, we lost that central feed. for you and i, campbell, and for people who surround us working in protection might have felt it was a single beltway. as far as i'm concerned, woods had played directly to the camera there several times in the first nine minutes of the speech. he lost that ability when he was talking directly to the nation and the world, and instead was only able to be spoken to from that side angle view. >> somebody got pretty chewed out, you can imagine, afterwards, when you know every broadcast network is taping this live, not to mention internationally, and those camera shots were taken out of it. we saw at the end his mother sitting there, he went over and hugged his mother. the woman in the gray sweater was crying at the end of his statement also. which one was she? i know you had mentioned -- >> right. well, going farthest to nearest, if you will, to the left of tiger woods' mom was amy reynolds with tiger woods design, formerly with nike, and kathy ba ttaglia, a personal assistant to woods. these are people in the room that have been close to woods for a very long time. >> they were invited there to kind of be his support system. let me get everyone's take on this. david, how are the sponsors reacting to this. it was enough. put it to rest, no, but the sponsors are feeling as good about or better than they were about tiger woods, seriously. >> we had actual absolutely zoor row's of tigers, personally. i think he looked very authentic, he looked scared, frightened. how do you get in front of the media and the world, your mom, and say you committed adultery multiple times. i can't imagine what would stand by yourself in front of a. the elephant in the room, sort of, was the fact that his wife was not there for this, wasn't it? >> yeah. i mean, i think there is a lot that can be taken from that. you know, her not being there, i think, actually kind of gave the story more credibility, if you will. we know that any rationale person, if you're of a large ability. she would have some doubts about their marriage and their future together, and he alluded to that, and i thought her not being there and him alluding to the fact that he did not know whether they would stay together was probably the most authentic part of their conference. >> he didn't answer. people like me, i'm done with tiger. but is he going to be out on the golf course? >> not until the end. he mentioned that, i'm not ruling out the possibility of playing this year. you take another 45 days, that gets you to the masters in early april. i didn't get anything that tiger was telling us, that he thinks he's going to go back any time soon. i don't think he's given it any thought. maybe he'll be back by the end of the season, but that's as basic as he can get. we have some very strong opinions on this. we'll be back right after this. host: is ed "too tall" jones too tall? not so much, maybe, but he mentioned his wife elin's name 15 times. used the word behavior nine times, used sorry or apology five times, used words of infidelity four times, but only used the word golf twice. back to you three. we also welcome cnn analyst a arnold martin. a lot of questions were asked about why he didn't take questions from reporters and why this wasn't more of a press conference. but you point out -- you think, at least, this was sort of part of his therapy process. >> this was part of a process that wasn't necessarily ever meant to be a q and a session. i was in tucson, arizona at the pga event this weekend, and this was the sheet we were all basically handed off. and nowhere on here does it say press conference or q and a. it was very clear. >> you mean about tiger's -- >> correct, this is as we and the press got it. then i had a chance to see this videotape that we just saw several times, and it dawned on me that it was more like a therapy session. we were brought into something that, really, you almost never have a chance to see unless you're not affected by your family. i contacted a family member who unfortunately had to go through aa and she said, well, that's step nine. number eight, make a list of all the persons we have harmed and be willing to make amends with all of them. step nine, accept and make amends to whoever possible. the camera was us, his fans, and his family. that's all he intended to do with any of us. >> jamelle, are you buying that? >> not entirely, because those are things he could have done very easily in private, and i'm sure that he has. i never agreed that he should have done this to begin with. i don't think he owes anyone an apology other than his family, other than his wife, his children, maybe his mother and his business sponsors, so this whole idea that he had to do some media question and answer session, i thought, was preposterous, and i definitely think it's preposterous, the idea he had to sit down and go through some lengthy interview with oprah or diane sawyer because he has absolutely nothing toe gain from that. tiger woods is not the first athlete, public figure, whatever you want to call him, to cheat on their spouse. so i'm sort of a little bit surprised that this story has even gained as much momentum as it has given we've seen this from presidents, senators, all sorts of politicians, religious leaders. so he's certainly not alone, and i think the fact he did not get out in front of this early on in the beginning is the reason why it's ballooned to the point that it has. >> i would agree he doesn't owe anybody anything other than his family. at one point when his children grow up a little bit, he's going to have to sit down and talk with them about that, campbell, but i don't think he owes the fans. >> he doesn't owe the fans anything? you don't get these multi-million-dollar sponsorships unless you have fans. >> campbell? you don't get multi-million-dollar sponsorships unless you win golf tournaments? right now david duvall, he has fallen off the map when it comes to golf rankings. he doesn't have the big sponsorships. >> i would disagree with you a little bit, though, in terms of endorsement feels. they certainly love the fact that this was a guy that children looked up to, who was put on a pedestal. you look at any sport, the people who get the most money in endorsement deals aren't just the best players -- >> yes, they are. >> no, rowland, they're not. they're also people who are true models that go beyond the sport. they have a much greater reach. do you agree that's accurate? >> you could be a great role model all day, but if you suck at the sport, you're not going to get paid. >> we get that, yes, the great players get big money, but the great players that are role models get bigger money, right? >> campbell, i don't think anybody ever thought tiger woods was this guy who you wanted to go out and have a beer with. >> no, but they thought he was loyal. >> you associated tiger woods with the platinum standard of excellence. that has come down at this point. you are -- he was at the absolute pinnacle of everything. basically his life was pristine. and then the day after thanksgiving, that's gone. he will probably never achieve it. but if he does, when he comes back to golf, he will win. >> let me bring tom into this. tom, i'm sorry, i'm leaving you out. let me get your take on this as well. >> well, i've had an opportunity, campbell, to sit down and talk one on one with tiger woods maybe half a dozen times. the last one was last april. one of the things i asked him was potentially as the world's most recognizable athlete, if not one of the most recognizable faces on the planet, how well does the world really know you? essentially, he said, the world knows me well enough. now the world knows him in a very different way. and i think this was the first step toward his attempt to try to redefine that image. i think that america forgives everything regarding athletes except failure on the field. if he's able to succeed again, as most people suspect he will, i think he'll be embraced again. we love a comeback. >> i know, we touched on this a little bit earlier, but when do you think you might see him back out there? >> i thought he came out like a politician rather than an athlete. i thought he should have finished his therapy before making a public statement. i thought he should have been gerch a little more time. >> he said he was sorry to his fans. >> i know he d but his voice would go up when he was angry at the press and his voice would go down when he was sorry. it was just very planned out. >> what do you think? >> i think he's a man. above all else, he's a man. he's not just an athlete. people need to give him his privacy. i don't think he owed the general public any kind of apology. he owed his wife an apology, and i think it's that simple. >> why is that? almost every woman, no matter who they are, where they're from, they loved what they heard. >> i didn't particularly love what i heard. but again, he's a man, he's not a superhero. he wrote something down, which he felt he had to do because there's politics involved in that in corporations and so forlt, but he needs to speak to his wife and thats it. >> what's the difference in how you looked at it? >> i didn't have a problem with what he said, but he needs to go to the kobe bryant school of repair. he needed to have people in there asking him questions that he's trying to avoid. he took so long, i kind of lost a little bit of respect for him, the fact he's taken this long, to pretty much just own up. like he said, he owes his wife an apology, but he also owes the sponsors an apology because i'm sure there are morality clauses in his contract. >> when there's an apology, you don't need to answer any questions. you say sorry and you keep on moving. you don't need to explain anything in detail. >> well, not maybe in detail, we don't have to get graphic, but there are questions still out there that the public wants to know, his sponsors would like to know. he needs to answer them and be accountable, that's all. >> i think what he did with all t the speech, he said i'm sorry and he needs to move o. >> i'm sorry i started this argument. thank you very much. it's new york state. they and everyone else listened to tiger woods' 13 minutes and they'll be talking about it through the weekend here and everywhere. campbell, back to you. >> i would actually go back to john and shante. they were getting into it. are they married, by the way? [ male announcer ] meet us at ameriprise.com. breaking news tonight. we have learned why that small, single-engine plane that crashed into an irs office in austin, texas had huge amounts of damage. several of the areas were gutted. david, what have you learned tonight? >> well, campbell, a source close to the investigation is telling us there were seats possibly missing from joe stack's private plane as he crashed into the irs building. there is also a barrel of fuel missing from the airport where he took off. now, they're looking into the possibility that he removed those seats to make room for that barrel of fuel, possibly to create a larger fireball as he crashed his plane into the irs building. that's very disturbing to hear that, because if that proves to be true as the investigation goes on, if that proves to be true, that suggests that he not only intended to take his own life but as many innocent lives as possible. >> wow, david. i know also that joe stack's wife cheryl put out a statement today. tell us about that as well. >> she did. she released a statement that was read by a family friend, and it was done right out here in the neighborhood where her house burned down to the ground. the main message there was that her heart goes out to everyone who was affected by this. and as we continue to learn today that joe stack may have been the only one who knew what he was planning but those close to him knew that something was very wrong. in the hours leading up to his crash in a private plane into the austin offices of the irs, those closest to joe stack knew he was losing control. the night before, his wife and her daughter sought refuge in a local hotel. >> the thing is that she had a bit of a problem with him evidently in the last few days. he has really boiled in his brain. and she informed us that she thought he was crazy. >> the stepfather of stack's wife cheryl confirms what the disturbed software engineer detailed in an on-line rant, that he blamed the irs for personal financial problems. >> cheryl told us that he had been fairly well off at one time and lost everything. and the irs hit him with a big bill. >> and before anyone could imagine the insanity joe stack was plotting, cheryl stack and her daughter shared a horrifying fron front-row seat to his rage. >> what did they say? >> they were distraught. normal kind of reaction. that's our house. you know, our house is on fire. >> neighbor ronald hutchins while stack's wife watched her house go up in flames. now asking for privacy, cheryl stack let everyone know her thoughts are for his victims. >> words cannot adequately express my sorrow or the sympathy i feel for everyone affected by this unimaginable tragedy. >> a tragedy that could have easily been much worse. about 300 people were inside the building at the time of the attack with only one of them killed and two injured. first responders have difficulty expressing the depth of their relief. >> you look at the fire and you look at the evidence. it's hard to say that we were lucky, but we were. >> surely lucky indeed, campbell. anyone who looks at that building wornnders how so few people got out of there without serious injury or being killed. >> thank you so much. appreciate t.
