gun fire. tripoli burns. no word from omar gadhafi, but his son says they could be headed to civil war. you are watching "world one." one government building in on fire in tripoli. the state tv station has been ransacked according to multiple media reports. it is still on the air. human rights watch says 233 people have died in major unrest sweeping the country. sunday night there were violent clashes between anti-government protesters and security forces. this was the scene in tripoli. protesters set fire to cars and witnesses say they heard pro-gadhafi music in the streets. this is the area where the protests have been centered around. it is north of the city? what is called green square. the violence spreads, moammar gadhafi's son spoke on tv. >> tomorrow we can speak rationally, we can spare the blood, we can stand all together for the sake of libya. we have a rare and historical moment to create an extraordinary reform in libya with the least amount of harm and losses. because if it wasn't that, forget about democracy, forget about reform. we will go into a fierce violence that will be worse than iraq, worse that yugoslavia, it will be a fierce civil war. >> the unrest in libya began almost a week ago. the central government totally lost control of the city and it has been taken over by protesters. the situation there, very unstable. >> more victims are falling by the hour. the situation is very, very grim at the moment. what we have here can only be described as genocide. i have no other explanation than crimes against humanity. we plea to all of you to put the necessary pressure to stop what is taking place in benghazi. the government has kept control on communications and has not responded to cnn for access into the country. let's talk to fanula sweeney. where is the leader of libya, moammar gadhafi? why is his son making such an important address? >> that is just pure speculation to comment on. the difficulty of getting any information corroborated on the ground. gadhafi went to the television station and made his speech and one can speculate moammar gadhafi is consumed with more pertinent issues. let me give you update what we are hearing in a press release in london, bp who has considerable oil interests in libya saying there are no plans to evacuate essential personnel, but all nonessential personnel are evacuated. we are hearing those reports that you mentioned about the state television being on fire, yet we are seeing pictures from state television. also opposition sources in libya couch this not clarification we are hearing, there is another government building on fire. another military barracks ransacked. these reports are very difficult to confirm on the ground because phone lines to tripoli are not working as one might hope. we are watching a very fluid situation. pro-gadhafi supporters in fwrgr square. >> fionnula, tell us about the son of ga dafy. he was seen as a voice of real reform in libya. what more can we know about him? >> reporter: he is in his 30s. he is an architect by profession. he is known to the west and portrayed as being one of the more liberal reform minded people in the country. in the speech everybody saw last night he had this quote of everybody has their idea of what has happened, their story. he has his own idea of what happened in libya and he was sticking to it. acknowledging that there were mistakes by both sides, but the army's only mistake is they fired because they have not been taught to restrain when they are being attacked. time and time again he came to the army being attacked. he particularly referred to foreign elements also involved in the disturbances. >> cnn's fionnula sweeney in cairo, egypt. the tv address has everyone asking why didn't the leader take to the airwaves but his son made the comments. we look at the relationship between father and son. >> he is very, very close to his father, the leader, moammar gadhafi and he speaks with the authority of his father. he was clear to me he was the person his father used to negotiate the release of al magrahee. if he is saying the streets will run with blood he is saying it because it is in his power to make that happen. >> the state department in the u.s. says that they are gravely concerned with disturbing reports and images coming out of libya. we have multiple critical reports that hundreds of people have been killed and injured. we have raised strong objections to the use of lethal force against demonstrators. european representative catherine ashton called for discipline from libyan authorities. >> i'm really worried about what is happening in libya at the present time. we have been urging restraint. you will hear it from all the foreign ministers. it is very, very important this violence stops and they reach a dialogue. >> the ambassador of libya has resigned to the arab league. he cannot support a regime that kills innocent people. he described moammar gadhafi as over, finished. he says the libyan ruler only has one or two days left because "he lost the people." there are reports of other resignations in the diplomatic corps but we are working on confirming them. libya is europe's biggest oil supplier. the events unfolding in libya are rattling the markets, sending the price of oil up by $2 to $88.24. you are watching "world one" live from london. a paramedic's bloody battle, braving bullets in bahrain to treat the wounded. an icon born of spare parts. it sounds like a screen play, right? >> we are hearing in sanaa, there are about 3,000 students having a peaceful sit-in that began last night outside of the university. what is interesting is there have been no clashes. riot police are out, they are surrounding the area. the pro-government demonstrators tried to access that area cannot get there, that is one of the reasons there have not been clashes. it is not just sanaa, thousands of people are in the streets. we are now hearing in the north of yemen there are people in the streets protesting calling for the fall of the regime. earlier today we went to a press conference with yemen's president, ideas that are infecting this land. he even likened what is happening here to a disease caught in tunisia and egypt. he said if you sit next to sun who is infected, you will get infected. saying this is not part of the yemen culture. a denial on what is happening. they don't want to acknowledge there is a lot of anger. >> cnn's mohamed jamjoom. there has been an attempted uprising in china. security forces clamped down on the peaceful action in a busy shopping street. key internet search words were blocked. in hong kong police outnumbered protesters. let's take a look at what is trending in social media. at number three, the mumbai high court rejected an appeal from the only surviving gunman from the mumbai terrorist attacks. a pakistani was sentenced to death last year for his involvement. at number two, the ouster tunis tunisian president is one of the top search on goog. and at number one, hash tag libya trending high on twitter. this google transparency report shows us the amount of google traffic into libya. this is a good indicator of the internet traffic. as you can see at times there has been no internet there at all. you can see the dips it takes. we are seeing little activity on social media inside the country. more of the top stories and some really great behind the scenes videos. we have photos at facebook.com/w1cnn. there is a strong tropical cyclone spinning in the south pacific. let's look where it is happening. meteorologist jen delgado. how serious is it? >> it is a strong tropical cyclone. the winds have been weakening over the last several hours. 185 kilometers sustained, gusts up to 282. if you put this in the atlantic, it would be a category 3. it is located 185 kilometers south of port villa, it is moving towards the southeast. i want to point out the winds 185, we will see a brief intensification, winds to 204. winds moving to the south, weakening, moving into cooler waters and less favorable wind environment. you can see convection near the center weakening and that is good news. they are dealing with strong winds as well as rough seas and we are going to continue to see threat for flooding problems. we are talking in the low lying areas, the coastal areas, vanuatu is remote so this is a dangerous situation for the people not aware of what is happening. look at the rainfall totals, 25 to 50 centimeters. this is going to last through today as well as tomorrow. it is very close to the southern and eastern islands of vanuatu. another big story we are watching out of the philippines. we have video of a volcano erupting. at the bulusan volcano. it lasted roughly about 20 minutes. it sent volcanic ash into the sky roughly three kilometers. now aviation officials are warning pilots to not fly through that area because damage to some of the airplanes flying through. the wind flow is pushing it to the southwest. according to the abs as well as the cbn website, they are evacuating 2,000 people near the site of the volcanic eruption. there is manila and there is the bulusan volcano. this is "world one" live from london. next stop, germany. we will see how one of the world's most coveted cars got it start from spare parts. the stars shone bright in los angeles on sunday as the nba held its 60th all-star game. we have all the action ahead in world sports. ng. open an e-trade account and open doors, seize opportunities, take action with some of the most powerful yet easy-to-use trading tools on the planet. all built to help you maximize the potential of every dollar you invest. successful investing isn't done by throwing ideas against the wall and hoping. it's done by lowering your costs and raising your expectations by using unbiased research and powerful screeners to build a diversified portfolio with stocks, bonds, mutual funds and every etf sold. and we'll help you every step of the way. with 5-star service and free education covering everything from the basics to advanced investing strategies. start now and we'll give you up to $500 and let you trade free for 60 days. visit our website, call us, open an account. e-trade. investing unleashed. ask me. if you think even the best bed can only lie there... ask me what it's like... when my tempur-pedic moves... ...talk to someone who owns an adjustable version of the most highly recommended bed in america... ask me about my tempur advanced ergo. ask me about having all the right moves. these are real tempur-advanced ergo owners! find one for yourself. check out twitter. try your friends on facebook... see what they have to say...unedited. it goes up... ask me what it's like to get a massage ---any time you want. ...it goes down... ergo...nomics... ergo...nomics... tempur-pedic brand owners are more satisfied than owners of any traditional mattress brand. ukraine. now we are in germany, focusing on industry and culture. you can't mention germany without mentioning the car industry. we rode with a legend to explore the birth of one of the world's most sought after sports cars. >> reporter: it was in 1963 crowds in the frankfurt motor show flocked to see a sports car to become an icon. then called a porsche 901. it was renamed the 911, the numbers that symbolize the best in german industry. designed by ferdinand porsche whose grandfather designed the first volkswagen. >> translator: one of the specifications is the car had to be instantly recognizable as a porsche from its silhouette. >> reporter: in 50 years the silhouette has hardly changed. but the top speeds has. the 911 can race at 205 miles per hour, 75 miles per hour faster than the original 901. few people on the planet can handle corners at that speed than this driver, driver and long time lover. >> it is the response of this car. if i turn on the steering, it's something special. it's the only car today which has the engine really in the back. >> what difference does that make though? >> it makes that the car is a much better traction than anybody else. >> reporter: he has been porsche's senior test driver for the last 17 years. he made his name back in the '70s. 4 times world rally champion he won the monte carlo rally four times, success powered by a never ending quest for perfection >> i never said, oh, i am perfect. i always say, you want it, but 5,000 kilometers and two corners was not perfect. >> reporter: it's hard to explain what it is like when roehrl puts his foot down. it is about precision, speed, not the actual speed itself where every centimeter counts. >> the car is a part of my body like my small finger. >> reporter: like roehrl, the 911 has one of the strongest track records of all time. human precision, mechanical engineering combined in perfect harmony. >> tough assignment there. for more on the legacy of the porsche and a wider look at german engineering and culture go to cnn.com/germany. the stars of the nba came out in los angeles. alex thomas wasn't there, but he is going to give us the details. >> it would have been nice, basketball is not my favorite sport, but terrific action from the all-star game. the best action on the planet. this was quite a show for sports fans. lakers kobe bryant leading the west against lebron james of the east. throws down the reverse two handed slam in the first quarter. cheers for kobe, but boos at the staples center when boston's all-stars checked in. that rivalry not forgotten. this is dunk contest champion blake griffin showing what he can do. bryant with another slam. he had 21 points at the half. there was more from kobe after the break. he goes right at lebron james on the breakaway and makes the slam, refusing to bow before king james. even a cheeky pat on his backside as he ran away. a monster jam there. he drives pau gasol for the layup. he recorded the second ever triple ever in all-star history. his exploits not enough to guarantee a comeback win. the west holding on 148-143. they won. kobe lifts the trophy. the best basketball on the planet to the top women's tennis player. caroline wojnaki won the championship from kim clijsters. the head band wearing rusher, is a two-time grand champion. wozniacki raced into a lead. the decisive point comes from kuznetsova forehand error. wozniacki finished number one. clearly she wants to stay there. >> you are watching "world one." protests spread in libya. we bring you the news. dodging fire on the front line, a paramedic's bloody battle in bahrain. l ingredientsh no artificial flavors or preservatives. naturals from purina cat chow. share a better life. hi. this is "world one" live from london. breaking news as fresh violence gripped the libya capital tripoli. multiple media reports say the state tv station has been ransacked and one government building is on fire. cnn is trying to confirm those reports. it is difficult to get independent information. sunday saw clashes between anti-government protesters and security forces. moammar gadhafi's son is warning they could go into civil war. in sudan,al bashir is stepping down. he came to power in a coup. he won presidential elections despite being indicted for war crimes, charges he denies. these are some of the thousands who rallied in morocco as anti-government demonstrations spread to other countries, demanding the limits to the power of king mohamed vi. they shouted people want change. the unrest spreading across libya has claimed the lives of at least 233 people according to human rights watch which made the statement sunday. the group says the information was taken from hospital sources. cnn is unable to independently verify it. moammar gadhafi's son rebuffed the figure, but admitted the army made a mistake when he shot at people. >> translator: there was a mistake by the army because the citizens were trying to fight the military and the police so they felt very nervous and stressed. particularly the army are not trained to restrain people and oppress people so they ended up shooting. and i heard that in libya they say to us many people who attacked us were drinking. some of them were on drugs. they came and attacked us. we shot people. we keep hearing of this. >> let's take a look at world newspaper views on this. in the uk the "independent" has this headline, benghazi defies gadhafi. claiming that mercenaries from chad, zimbabwe and north african countries went on a killing spree. in the uk the "guardian"'s headline is for gadhafi it is kill or be killed. now he has gone straight for the kill. no one expects gadhafi to give up peacefully. he may make gestures but that seems unlikely to satisfy protesters after such brutality towards ordinary libyans. this is the headline in the "national." violence is no substitute for dialogue. in tunisia and egypt the use of force against civilians hardened the resolve of demonstrators. one issue, many views. you can read all those articles in full at facebook.com/w1cnn and i will be chatting with you there as well. we are joined from cairo. your latest numbers say 233 people have been killed in the violence in libya. would you say that was a conservative estimate on the part of human rights watch? do you expect that number to go up? >> that is a conservative estimate. we've only used numbers where we have been able to confirm with credible hospital staff. 233 is of last night. we are trying to get a hold of hospital staff in tripoli. we are hearing there may be as many as 30 people who may have been killed overnight in tripoli. this is not something we have been able to confirm. the violence in tripoli is our main focus this morning. moammar gadhafi's son seif al islam said they will fight until the end. is it your sense they will keep coming on the streets. >> i think seif al islam's speech will not quiet the streets. the laws that have limited political freedoms are offers he made in 2008 and he did not deliver on. libyans had the hope of libya for tomorrow he is calling about. they have moved beyond trusting in moammar gadhafi's willingness his son to put forward some reforms. they want real reform. they want a formal constitution to define people's roles. so seif comes in as one of the sons of the libyan leader is precisely the reflection of the politics people are upset about. >> from your conversations with people in libya, how do they view the military and from your sources, how does the military stand here? >> it is very difficult to fully understand the affiliations of the military. there are a number of different battalions, different commanders, some of the sons of gadhafi have personal security services, battalions in some cases they personally command. there are reports of other battalions in benghazi that crossed over and started supporting the protesters. yesterday we saw two of the tribe who have provided protection for the gadhafi regime over the years saying they will no longer support gadhafi. so the picture of support for and against gadhafi is very much along tribal lines. that plays into the military. it is not an institution as such loyal to a minister of defense who may or may not support the leadership. >> hum >> marayef from human rights watch. this the risks there are huge? >> reporter: it is a very good question. in fact, scott and jeanne adam are not novices. they say on their blog they have done over 50,000 nautical miles on their boat. a statement has been released by a group the bluewater rally group. that is essentially a british based group that organizes rallies, as it were, sailing around the world for groups of people. they say that after a group of yachts left india, that this boat broke away from the relative safety of that group of yachts and that's when it was taken. so we don't know why they broke away from that group which is what people say yachts should do. travel in groups. travel in certain lanes of the sea where the military has a stronger presence. that might come out in the coming days. most likely the "s/v quest" will be moving toward pirate dens. unless the pirates are attacked by military force the pirates will start negotiating. >> david is having a hard time connecting. what are the options for the navy here? >> i can hear you now. >> okay. >> reporter: the option is for the navy to either monitor the situation, try and block that boat from getting closer to shore, really, the game is over if they really manage to get the couple on to the shore. the british couple paul and rachel chandler, the royal navy could have intervened, they decided it was too dangerous and that couple was taken on to the shore in somalia. the bombing in mogadishu. somalia is a lawless country without an effective government. they can't send police to do a raid. if the military intervenes they have to do it in international waters before that boat gets close to the shore. we haven't heard the "s/v quest" is close to shore. we will follow it in the coming hours and bring it to you when it comes in. >> david mckenzie, asante, david. the international maritime bureau says there were 445 pirate attacks last year. that is up slightly over 2009. most attacks were blamed on somali pirates. all told 53 ships were hijacked worldwide and 1,200 sea farers were captured, eight were killed. as of january 1, 28 ships were being held hodge. would you help this man if you could?
