Hello, and welcome to our viewers in the United States and across the world. Im errol barnett. Thanks for joining us. This is cnn newsroom. Well begin this hour with isis and its latest disturbing video. The propaganda video that youre seeing shows children in fatigues what appears to be an isis Training Camp. We should point out that we cannot verify where or when this was shot. This comes as the u. S. National Security Agency admits it doesnt have enough intelligence about isis. The agency chief tells us leaks from Edward Snowden created blind spots in tracking certain terror groups. Kurdish peshmerga fighters have been fairly successful at taking territory away from isis in Northern Iraq. Our Senior International correspondent, ben wedeman, has been on the front lines of the battle and joins us live from erbil in Northern Iraq. How are the peshmerga able to maintain their territory considering many are outgunned by isis . Reporter well, its important to remember that theyve actually lost a lot of territory last summer. First of all, when isis took over mosul in june and started to push later in the summer toward erbil, but theyve been able to retake territory partly with the help of Coalition Air strikes. But partially because, of course, they already have a military force separate from the fairly dismally performing iraqi army. And that is the peshmerga. The kurdish fighters in the nrth of the country. But they certainly are at a disadvantage when it comes to isis. Isis of course has been able to capture huge amounts of very sophisticated american weaponry. Mountains of ammunition. So the kurds really have to make due with what theyve got. The sparks fly in the subterranean workshop in erbils old city. Hes busy repairing a battlebattered ak47 assault rifle. All day and well into the night, this 36yearold gun repairman fixes the aging weapons the peshmerga, the Kurdish Military force in Northern Iraq use to fight isis. This sovietera machine gun is older than he is and is jamming after four or five bullets. Hes been at the job since he was a child. This picture taken when he worked in his fathers workshop back in 1990. In the more than 25 years hes been in this business hes never met a weapon he couldnt fix. 47yearold peshmerga fighter natif has come from the front lines near kirkuk. Easy things we can fix ourselves, he says. Bigger problems we bring here. Baktir makes house or trench calls, regularly traveling to the front tliens repair free of charge damageded or malfunctioning guns. Business picked up dramatically last summer when isis seized nearby mosul and threatened erbil and hasnt let up since. Before i was working every day from 9 00 to 4 00, he says. I finished early every single day. No more. Now the workshop echoes with the clatter of gun repair. That is when hes not peering down the barrel of machine guns and pistols to check their sites. His hardest task today is repairing a shrapnelpocked u. S. Made m16 which tells a story in itself. He says it belonged to the iraqi army then fell into the hands of isis fighters when they fled mosul. It was damaged and its last owner killed in a Coalition Air strike. Soon it will be working again. This time aimed at the isis. And its certainly the irony isnt missed in the gun shop where we were told this is the only way kurds can get their hands on american weapons, through isis. And ben, if we zoom out a bit and assess the Bigger Picture here where does the overall battle stand . Is isis really on its back foot have iraqi peshmerga and Coalition Efforts stopped its momentum over the past week . Reporter its a mixed picture. If you look at the really big picture, no. Certainly in kurdistan, Northern Iraq if does appear that they have stopped isis advances in this part of the country. In fact the kurds have gained several hundred dreads of kilometers back. But if you look south in Anbar Province the iraqi army is still on the defensive. And broader still, look at the situation in libya. There are a few bright spots when you look around. But the grander picture is that isis expansion has not been stopped. And certainly doesnt show any signs of dramatically slowing down when you consider, for instance the growing influence in libya. Here in kurdistan, yes, they seem to have been halted in their tracks for the time being. Errol will . Certainly those peshmerga fighters doing all that they can with what they have. Ben wedeman, live inner bill thanks. We attorney heightened security at the mall of america. One of the biggest Shopping Centers in the u. S. Attention authorities staged a security lockdown at the sprawling complex near minneapolis on monday. Thats after the somalian Terror Group Al Shabaab called for lone wolf attacks on the u. S. Canada and united kingdom. Security officials at the mall of america say they are taking all necessary precautions. They have dedicated teams that are patrolling the mall of america. They have uniform and plain clothes officers. Officers trained specifically in behavior detection techniques. The fbi is downplaying the threat saying there are no known Credible Threats against any u. S. Malls. Turkey is helping in the search for three british teenagers believed to be heading into syria to join isis. The girls, ages 15 and 16 were last seen a week ago getting on a flight to turkey. Turkish Officials Say they hope to find the teenagers but add its not their fault if they dont. The countrys deputy Prime Minister tells reuters that britain took too long to raise the alarm. Whats baffling here is that one of these girls has been called an astar student. So the key question is why did they leave their homes presumably to live with militants . There are many theories out there including online recruitment by an isis bride from scotland. Atika schubert looks at their movements and why some say more should have been done. Reporter they crossed the security and immigration, three schoolgirls from east london. 15yearold and 16yearold shamima begum, kadiza sultana, and amira abase. They are believed to be headed for the border with syria. What convinced the girls leave their families and head to syria . Were there any red flags police and family should have noticed . In fact one of their classmates left for syria in december. Police talked to the girls at the time, warning of the darngs of going to dangers of going to syria. Access to social Media Networks at the academy is also strictly regulated. Students are unable to access twitter or facebook on academy computers. With such measures in place, police have advised us that there is no evidence that radicalization of the missing students took place at the academy. Reporter social media chats indicate that at least one of the girls were in touch with a girl who left for syria age of age. She runs a blog giving students stepbystep instructions on what to bring, how to dress, and what to expect arrival in isiscontrolled territory. Terror an lives say women are some of the most successful recruiters for isis on line. As far as radicalization and recruitment goes women are better equipped at recruiting other women. They would feel more comfortable talking with women especially on forums saying what is it like what can i expect, and having a woman communicate with you brings down the threshold for feeling comfortable to leave. Reporter the families of three schoolgirls are hoping they will be stopped from entering syria before its too late. Cnn, london. Israels Intelligence Agency may have disagreed with the israeli Prime Minister about Irans Nuclear weapons capabilities. The Guardian Newspaper and al jazeera say they obtained leaked documents from assad challenging a claim Benjamin Netanyahu made in 2012. Senior International Correspondent Nic Robertson joins us with more details. According to these leaked documents, israels Intelligence Agency contradicted Prime Minister in the the in thes claim in 2012 that iran was close to building a nuclear bomb. But israeli Officials Say there is no discrepancy between assad and the israeli Prime Minister. What are we to make of that . Reporter these are leaked documents belonging to the South African state Intelligence Agency. The ssa. And what this appears to be and what were told by al jazeera and the Guardian Newspaper it is who have seen the documents and the guardian says its had them independently verified. What they stated is a letter in october of 2012 to the South African Intelligence Agency the ssa, stating the believed position of iranian readiness for developing nuclear weapons. And what this article suggests is that what musad puts in the letter to the Intelligence Agency is out of step with what in the the netanyahu told the u. N. Security council just a month earlier. The Prime Minister was making a case that iran is pushing ahead with a sort of medium phase of development, and it will complete that in a relatively short space of time. And then by as early as next summer and then move on within weeks or months to the final stage of producing a weapon. What the report is believed to have said according to al jazeera and the guardian, the is that in fact the Intelligence Agency mosad, doesnt believe that the iranians are pressing ahead, perhaps as quite as hard as suggested by the israeli Prime Minister. However, as you say, the israeli authorities at the moment are saying there is no gap in between. That if you examine this very closely, then certainly you can see where the israeli Intelligence Agency is going and where Prime Minister in the the netanyahu is gmpg netanyahu saying that the israelis are producing medium range enriched uranium, 20 level of enrichment. Indeed the iranians were at the that stage. Wasnt until nine months later under agreement with the p5 plus one that negotiators agreed to neutralize the 20 enriched uranium. Mosad was saying it didnt believe that iran this going to the weaponization, the final stage. It was trying to close Development Gaps through apparently legitimate means. But both mossad and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu were making the point that the final gap is relatively easy or can be bridged in a relatively short space of time. And really thats the point that the israelis are making at the moment. There is no real daytime between these two real daylight between the two perspectives. Some might not agree. It will be interesting to see what impact the leaked spy cables will likely have on mr. Netanyahus address to the u. S. Congress on march 3rd given it appears he may have exaggerated irans capables. Its certainly going to undermine the position that hes in. And the guardian said that the leaked documents are perhaps several hundred. They frachblg confionly do top secret. But that they are a selective leaking. So this particular report is something that is going to potentially embarrass the israeli Prime Minister and certainly potentially undermine his message. And clearly thats what israeli authorities are trying to close down at the moment. Well keep a close eye on this story. Nic robertson live from london. Many thanks. An Egyptian Court has postponed the retrial of two al jazeera journalists until march 8th. Mum they were convicted of supporting the banned muslim brotherhood. A charge they deny. Fahmy has been critical of the prosecution and his lawyer. We have been pointing that out for the past year or so about you how the prosecution is faulty. However, al jazeeras negligence has given them more firepower. A third al jazeera journalist convicted in the case peter greste in the center, was freed earlier this month. Well take a very short break right now. Just ahead, the indonesian president isnt budging. He has denied clemency for two australian men convicted of drug smuggling. Reporter rebel soldiers listen out for their names. A roll call of men honored for their service in battle. In donetsk its a public holiday, defender of the fatherland day. Entertainment for the troops, even a wedding ceremony. I asked one woman beaming in the winter sunshine why she has a flag of stalin. Stalin was also fighting against fascism, and he won, she says. We also want a victory like he did. Stalin also brought catastrophic hunger to eastern ukraine. Thats forgotten now in a stwrae russia can do no wrong. This is all about meeting the peoples needs, their most basic needs, food putting on a show for them. Also a chance for the rebels to really drive home their agenda. Which seems to have a very clear message all people here they think that ukraine is between russia and u. S. Reporter amongst the hugs and cheer, theres a sense this war is not done. Translator there is no way back. We will fight to the last. We must finish what we started. Reporter little girl mini rebel in the making recites the poetry her grandmother taught her. An anthem. I ask god for the rebels victory, she says. He will kick out the fascist filth. How many people must suffer . How many children, how many old people . She speaks the rebelss language. Wants to fight on their side when shes old enough to carry a real gun. Such a powerful flageending the report. Diana joins us from donetsk. Of course kids are impressionable. Why do the rebel supporters truly believe that the Ukrainian Government and its european allies are to blame . Their anger does seem quite deep. Reporter the Propaganda Machine is a strong one. This has always been a propaganda war. You remember rumors circulating pushed by russia that it was actually people people coming to the the square because it was, the whole thing orchestrated by the u. S. We heard Sergei Lavrov the Russian Foreign minister say last night to the u. N. Security council that it is the u. S. Who is the root cause of all the problems in the ukraine and in the middle east. In fact its not really anger at this stage targeted toward president poroshenko although youll hear the constant refrain that he is killing his own people. You but it is mostly directed interestingly against the United States. That is a message being strongly firmly driven home from the russian side. Its stunning the differences night and day of opinion between the rebels and though who support the Ukrainian Government. Speaking of what is the latest on each side pulling out heavy weapons in the region . Reporter i dont know if you, hear, but behind me there was a rumbling of shelling that seemed to be coming from the direction of the airport. So in the last few days, although the extent of the exchange of firepower has doctored over the battle in deballotseve debaltseve this their is no ceasefire. There has been monitoring across the conflict area and the south coast. Because of that the Ukrainian Military said we are not going to remove our heavy weapons until theres an absolutes ceasefire. Although the osce is waiting for both sides to give them an infantry of twoeps pull back and the roots that theyre going to pull back along, that hasnt happened from either side yet. Were still in this stalemate effectively as european Foreign Ministers meet again in paris to try and rescue the remains of this truce. The divisions are as deep as ever. Our thanks reporting this morning on some shelling still heard in the distance. Just past 9 20. Thanks. In what amounts to a wakeup call a young child has died from the measles in germany. And south korea say their annual joint military exercises will begin march 2nd and north korea appears ready to flex its own muscle. Paula hancocks is live in seoul with the latest. North korea seems to love any opportunity to rally its military. Whats being made of these annual drills this time around . Reporter the kind of reaction were seeing is really to be expected. In january pyongyang asked the u. S. To stop these drills saying that they wouldnt carry out a nuclear test if they stopped the drills. The u. S. Rejected that washington saying that was basically an implicit threat saying they could carry out a nuclear drill. So the drills will go ahead. The u. S. Says they are defensive in nature, says they are annual. They are routine. Pyongyang never accepts that. The bigger the explosion, the more impressive the flyby the bigger the smile. North Korean Leader kim jongun appears to have a fondness for the military dramatic. A Supreme Commander of the Korean Peoples Army he spent more time visiting military barracks and soldiers last month than any other public appearance. The state ideology of military first is alive and well. A dictator managing his dictatorship needs to ensure that the military and the Security Forces are loyal. So thats part of that going on Surveillance Missions or monitoring all of the commanders going out and giving field guns to ensure that they are loyal. Reporter pyongyang spends almost a quarter of its National Income on the military according to state department estimates. Far more than anywhere else in the world. A focus that comes at the expense of its economy and its people. The military unveiled new technology this month testfiring new antiship missiles as well as regular shortrange missiles. The Top Commander in south korea told washington last october he has concerns about the rate of pyongyangs development in a number of areas. Capabilities include several hundred ballistic missiles. One of the Worlds Largest chemical weapons stockpiles a biological Weapons Research program, and the Worlds Largest special Operations Force as well as an active cyberwarfare capability. Reporter imminent drills between the United States and south korea are annoying pyongyang as they do every year. More north korean drills and shows of strength can be expected as colorful uptick in the countrys antiu. S. Rhetoric. Most observers believe this should be a calmer training season than 2013 when tensions were higher on the peninsula than they had been be for years. There was an opinion piece today in the north korean newspaper referring to the joint military drills. The offer said this was an invasion practice to pressure our nation to death. We are seeing the kind of rhetoric that we would expect this time of year. Errol will . Considering all of that paula, beyond the rhetoric we hear from pyongyang, is there anything to suggest that these drills will be any more dangerous than usual . Reporter some experts are suggesting that they may not be just simply for the fact that this is a very important year for north korea. The 70th anniversary of the foundation of the founding of the country. North korea has enacted slogans to commemorate the event. They say that their celebrations will be large. So there is a school of thought that pyongyang may see a military confrontation beyond the usual rhetoric as somewhat of a distraction in what is an important year for them. So certainly the hopes here in south korea at any rate are that these should go without too much to much commotion as we saw in 2013. The fact that pyongyang has other things to be focusing on at the moment. Weve seen before where the rhetoric doesnt match their actions and behavior at all. But certainly the threats are there. Paula hancocks live from seoul this afternoon. Thanks very much. A top u. S. This comes as isis militants showcased their brutality in yet another propaganda video. Jim sciutto has details for us from washington. [ gunfire ] reporter isis advertising its brutality once again. Reporter despite distributing propaganda publicly on social media, today the head of the nsa acknowledged new blind spots in tracking terrorists like isis as theyve altered and concealed their communications in the wake of revelations by Edward Snowden. About 400 french citizens are believed to be fighting right now with militant groups in syria and iraq. Two australian men on death row in indonesia just lost a late attempt spare their lives. A judge has thrown out the pairs appeal. Theyre a part of an alleged drug smuggling ring known as the bali 9 and have received a death sentence. Lets go to 7 News Reporter alex hart. Hes on the phone for us in bali. Why was this appeal denied . And now that all the legal avenues have been exhausted what happens next to these two australians . Reporter at this stage theres very little if any hope left for them. And in terms of avoiding the death penalty. What happened today is the judge ruled that that court did not have any jurisdiction to challenge the president s clemency decisions, and that those clemency decisions themselves cant be challenged at all. This was to be expected. It was only being done once before in the case of another drug smuggler from australia. The courts throughout the challenge threw out the challenge then. The lawyers were prepared for this hoping against hope that perhaps the judge might have a change of heart and would consider the cases. Specifically the individual cases of these two men more carefully given that everyone that knows them will appear as their lives have been completely turned around since they were convicted of the crime. Perhaps they were observing a second chance. They have 14 days to appeal. This they said they will do so and what theyre calling on now is the endnesian government to respect the Legal Process and not proceed with these executions. Even though the government has made it pretty clear that theyre not going to hesitate in doing so. Yeah. And this has been of course part of a gettough policy on drug smugglers. If there is no stay of execution and doesnt look like there will be for these two men, what will the likely ramifications be when they are executed . And where will it leave the relationship between australia and indonesia . Reporter difficult to answer. Were not entirely sure where its going to go from here. Obviously the relationship is under restraint at the moment. Its been under strain at the moment. Its been a difficult time for relations with the people smuggling controversy. There were revelations of australians spying on the indonesian president , the former president that is. And issues with cattle trade as well as trade of animals. Now this this is putting a huge amount of pressure on the relationship. You know weve seen protests on the streets of jakarta. Images of the australian Prime Minister people mocking him. Linking the issue of foreign aid that australia paid out in the 2004 tsunami and saying almost that should be rip indicated, this money, by showing it. Weve got almost two political agencies if you like. Indonesias president and the australian Prime Minister playing to domestic audiences. It seems to be the flexing of their muscles is not helping the men who are on death row. We had one of their australian lawyers come out today and really appeal for calm saying this is just not fair on the two men on death row. So where it goes from here as i say, were not entirely sure. Certainly it is going to be a pretty turbulent period ahead for australia indonesian relgs e relations, i would suspect. 7 News Reporter alex hart from bali. Commission has received them from the greeks. I was asking you what happens if theyre not approved. You were saying theyre designed so they will be approved. What does that mean exactly . Reporter it means that once a decision was made in brussels to keep looking into the Greek Program and looking at the reforms, we expect the euro group will approve them. The main thing is that the list is not that detailed at this point. It is an outline to work with. It doesnt have any Cost Effective analysis. And it addressing issues like tax evasion, combating corruption but it doesnt give specifics on how everything will be done. From what we understand, whats going to happen now is some more specifics will be ironed out in due course. Once the approval has been given by the euro group later today. Now, what this means is that greece has about two months to exactly decide on the measure and vote them in. Then greece will have two months to implement the form. This is the timeline between now and the end of june when the final decision will be made on greece on this issue. We know that greece is effectively going to be kept on a tight leash for that period because the money will be enough for greece to pay its creditors. What were talking about a time extension, not a money extension. So if the paper, the reforms are approved to then we expect that well be hearing more about the details and exactly how things will be done rosemary. Keeping a close eye on that. Of course it will be interesting to get to gauge what the greek voters think about all of this. Lindaa joining us there on the line. Appreciate it.
