United states. Reporter using the four days of the Republican National convention to paint a much different narrative. We developed from scratch the largest and most advanced testing system anywhere in the world. Reporter President Trump upended the traditions of a national convention, delivering a blistering 70minute speech in support of his reelection tonight taxpayerowned south lawn of the white house. The fact is, were here and theyre not. Reporter talking up his accomplishments and using the current strife in American Cities taking place under his watch to warn voters about a joe biden administration. If the radical left takes power, they will apply their disastrous policies to every city, town, and suburb in america. Reporter his speech capped off with a massive fireworks display, was impressively staged, but was rife with falsehoods. Cnn counted more than 20 false and misleading statements, just a portion of which were recapped by cnns fact checker, daniel dale. He claimed again he banned travel from china and europe. No, he posed partial restrictions with many exemptions. Tens of thousands of people continue traveling over. He boasted about covid testing system and about his general response. Look, experts near universally say the u. S. Was fatally slow in its response, especially slow in setting up adequate testing. Reporter the end of the Convention Season means the start of the final campaign sprint. Both trump and biden expected to be on the road much more, but the problems confronting america still linger with the two sides taking a much different approach. The Republican Party condemns the rioting, looting, arson, and violence we have seen in democratrun cities, all, like kenosha. Reporter today, trump still not even mentioning jacob blakes name, the man shot seven times by a Police Officer in wisconsin that set off new round of protests. Reporter we must always have law and order. Reporter trump, instead, referring to the protesters around the country as an angry mob. Some of those protesters just steps outside the white house, could be heard from the south lawn during the president s speech. Afterward, they confronted the president s supporters as they left the white house grounds. Among them, senator rand paul, who accused the protesters of assaulting him and tweeted his thanks to the washington, d. C. , police, for literally saving our lives from a crazed mob. And were expecting the president here in New Hampshire in just a couple of hours. And as you can see here behind me, this is a fullon campaign rally. Very little social distancing, but we should not forget the real impacts of the coronavirus pandemic. Of course, there were more than a thousand people on the south lawn of the white house last night. Very few wearing masks. And very little social distancing. There are realworld impacts to this, jake. The Republican National convention which took place in charlotte indoors, a little more than 300 people, and already there are four cases of the coronavirus that came out of that event. And Health Officials in North Carolina said that they are just beginning the process of finding out exactly what the longterm impacts are of that gathering. Jake. Reporter the president and his Campaign Setting the exact opposite example that Health Officials want him to. Ryan nobles, thanks so much. Lets go now to cnns sara sidner for new details on the shooting of jacob blake. The local police union is out today with some new claims about the shooting. This is just breaking right now. What are you learning . Yeah, its really interesting. We should note that normally these details would come out from officials, like the police chief, but we now know that they are not the investigating agency. It is the state department of justice that is the investigating agency. But were now hearing these new details from the police union. The Kenosha Police union. Im going to read a few things out here. These are things you have not yet heard before from an initial standpoint. They are talking about why they came up to encounter mr. Blake, saying that he was not actually breaking up a fight between two other people, that, indeed, they were aware that he had a warrant out for his arrest, particularly the warrant that involved a charge of sexual assault. They say that mr. Blake was not unarmed, that he had a knife in his possession. That the officers did not initially see the knife, but they were aware of the warrant. And then later, apparently, they told mr. Blake, when they did see the knife, to drop the knife, drop the knife, and he did not comply. That is according to the Kenosha Police union. These are new details we hadnt heard before. They are coming out from an interesting spot. Very different from any other Police Department or Police Investigation that ive ever covered, that were getting information about the investigation from the union, not from any other official source. We are also hearing from the union, they say that the silver suv that everyone has seen on the video, that he is trying to get into, was not mr. Blakes vehicle. We know that they were called to the scene initially from the dispatch audio. They were initially called because someone called saying that he had taken their keys and now we are learning more from the police union in this case, jake. All right, sara sidner, i believe you also have a piece to run right now . Reporter yeah, we have more information on all of this. And some more breaking news inside the story were about to tell you. 17yearold Kyle Rittenhouse accused of fatally shooting two people in kenosha is due to appear in an Illinois Court next month after an extradition hearing was pushed back. Authorities are fighting to have him sent to wisconsin, where he faces six charges in two fatal shootings and the wounding of another. Police and social media videos reveal the 17yearold suspect came to kenosha with a rifle and a plan, later laid out in the charges against him. He explained it that night to the conservative media outlet, the daily caller. People are getting injured and our job is to protect this business and part of my job is to also to help people. If theres somebody hurt. Reporter instead, Authorities Say rittenhouse ended up killing and injuring people. Several social media videos show it playing out in the streets of kenosha. His attorney telling nbc news his client acted in selfdefense. Hanna gidings boyfriend, shown here, died trying to stop the gunman using a skateboard. He loved the city because it was his city and he wanted to make it better. Like, he wanted to stay in this house with me and my daughter and raise her here and like make it a better place. Reporter anthony kennedy, a Kenosha Alderman is clear on who he believes is to blame for the worst violence. The last time there was a Police Shooting in this town was six years ago. This narrative that the police are out of control is something im pushing back on. The agitators are the ones who are showing up with guns who want to kill people. The protest that created this volatile mix sparked by another shooting. The Police Shooting of jacob blake, that left him airliparal after being shot seven times in the back. Jacob blakes family telling cnn police have cuffed blake to his hospital bed. When i walked into that room, you know, hes paralyzed from the waist down. Why do they have that cold steel on my sons ankle . He cant get up he couldnt get up if he wanted to. So thats a little overkill, to have him shackled to the bed. That just makes no sense to me. Reporter the sheriff says hes cuffed to the bed because blake has felony warrants for his arrest, including one from july for thirddegree sexual assault. Friday afternoon, blakes local Attorney Says the cuffs were finally removed and blakes warrants vacated. Dispatch audio from the moments before blakes shooting are shedding a little more light on why police approached them. Jacob blake isnt supposed to be there and he took the contemplate accountants keys and is refusing to give them back. It looks like hes trying to leave. Were trying to get a vehicle description. Reporter the blake family attorney saying these two shootings are an example of two different justice systems in america. No Police Officer that he walked by, no National Guard that he walked by shot him in the back. Nobody killed him. It is the tale of two videos that perfectly highlight the frustration of africanamericans and the nba players and the Major League Players and everybody who wants equal justice in this society. Reporter and we are hearing the same thing from jacob blakes family, although they tell me they are relieved to know now jacobs blakes cuffs twb cu, the cuff on his leg that cuffed him to the hospital bed has been removed and that police are no longer guarding him at the hospital. Jake . Sara sidner in kenosha, wisconsin, thank you very much. Also in our national league, late this afternoon, President Trump granted Alice Johnson a full pardon. He had commuted her life sentence in 2018. This was for a firsttime offense related to drug trafficking. Johnson delivered one of the most memorable specious at the Republican NationalConvention Last night. And Alice Johnson joins me now in her first interview since receiving that full pardon. First of all, miss johnson, congratulations on your pardon. Did you have any inkling that this was going to happen . Jake, i had no idea. None. Its almost like deja vu. From two years ago, when i woke up that morning, i didnt know that would be my dlais in prison. Tell me what it was like for you finding out that President Trump was pardoning you and what it means to you. Well, i had no idea. I went to the white house for a different reason. And when i got there, i was with the family who was there last night who there are three children of a slain mother. They were there to see the president , too. And i was there to see him also, after the after last night. And they went in first and i was waiting and they came out and told me that the president , they told me, the president , alice, wants to give you, is going to give you a full pardon. Hes going to give you a pardon. Jake, my hands were shaking so bad, im still you just dont know, jake. I ran to get to this interview, because it was already scheduled with you, so it was everything is closed off. And i didnt want to let you down, so i was running, literally, trying to make it here. Well, were honored. We were honored before and were honored that you ran because of this incredible event that just happened. Last night, you delivered what i think a lot of people feel was a beautiful and moving speech at the convention. And you praised President Trump for his compassion in commuting your sentence and in granting your release. You did not formally endorse him in your remarks. Was that intentional . Do you endorse him . Well, you know, im so appreciative of everything the president has done. And of course i support him as a president. And last night, i didnt have a right to vote. And i still havent registered to vote. So i thought it would have been a little bit hypocritical of me to not be able to vote, and then say, im endorsing. But i do support the work and things that the president is doing. Do you want him to be reelected . Well, i would like to continue to work with him on criminal Justice Reform, so i would like to see that happen, to be able to continue to do this work. But jake, for me, this is not about politics, this is about people. And i try to really stay focused on what my mission is. As i said in my speech, that was true. I did make a promise to the women and to the men that i would never stop fighting for them. And this really is not a partisan issue, criminal Justice Reform. Its something that reaches across the aisle, that has affected that has impacted both republicans and independents, democrats. Its american citizen, who have been impacted by this. There are a lot of people, in the Democratic Party, and increasingly in the Republican Party, who think that we just we imprison too many people for offenses that dont deserve the sentences theyre getting. Now, president obama, he granted clemencies to more than 1,900 people while in office. So far, President Trump has granted 36. Many of them were for people that he knew or conservatives. You spent 21 years behind bars. Yes, sir. 22. 22. I assume that you think that President Trump should be commuting more sentences and pardoning more people, because you saw firsthand people that were in prison for so long and didnt deserve to be there. Right. Well, thats what im advocating for, jake. And im hoping that that will be coming in the near future. I have been working relentlessly on that. In fact, i havent as spent as much time with my family as i would have liked to. I cant just come out and forget about the people who were left behind. And thats what ive really dedicated my life to doing, is helping them come home. I i think its beautiful what youre doing. I do want to ask you, because President Trump is not particularly popular in the black community, how you explain your work with him, your speaking at the convention, if people criticize you and they say, you know, hes a racist or whatever . What do you say to them . I have not seen President Trump on a personal level. You know, jont yunlg anyones heart. Just like you, jake, i take you personally. Youve been i see you as another human being whos been very kind to me. Im going to be kind to you also. So the president has been very kind to me and the other people who i have been in contact with, whos been around him, i know him personally. And i dont see that in him. Whatever anyone else feels, they have the right to what they feel. But for myself, i really dont see that in him. Alice johnson, just two messages for you before i say goodbye. One, please stay in touch with us so that we can continue to focus on the issue of criminal Justice Reform and your passion for it. And second of all, god bless you and congratulations. Thanks so much for honoring us with your presence today. Thank you, jake. Have a great weekend. And this election will decide whether we will defend the american way of life or whether we will allow a radical movement to completely dismantle and destroy it. President trump accepting his partys renomination in a 90, im sorry, in a 70plus minute speech from the white house, that was frankly littered with lies. Mr. Trump painted a disturbing, even dystopian view of what a biden presidency would look like, even though hes been running the country for the last three and a half years. And while much of the gop seems to be in lockstep with the president , there are a number of former Trump Administration officials who are speaking out and even backing biden. Elizabeth newman is one of them. She served as assistant secretary for threat premventio in the department of Homeland Security and joins us now. Elizabeth, thank you so much for joining us. I know you no longer support the president. What was your take on his speech last night . He really talked a lot about law and order, which is in your wheelhouse. Yes, thanks for having me, jake. More of the same, was my impression. The president loves to entertain. This was a speech that there were parts of it, especially at the beginning, that if a normal president had been giving, it would have been totally appropriate, and then it took a very dark turn, which is pretty persistent with the way in which he campaigns. Its very clear that the campaigns approach is to instill fear, to use divisive language. He is intentionally scaring people that their way of life, whatever that way is, is at risk, if they dont vote for him. And sadly, for for certain parts of our country, that rhetoric can lead to taking matters into their own hands. It can lead to radicalization of ideals that are very antiwhat this country is about. But White Supremacy, white nationalism, antigovernment extremist ideas have been growing for quite some time in this country. And his divisive rhetoric is fuel on that fire and it makes us less safe. Yeah, this was an area that you worked on when you were at the department of Homeland Security, trying to get the Trump Administration to take seriously the threat from rightwing white supremacist domestic terrorists or potential domestic terrorists. Which is not a group that President Trump really even acknowledges very often. Tell us about that experience. Sure. We saw that the trend of growing, very in your face, very outspoken White Supremacy and to to be clear, White Supremacy and racism has been around for millennia. This is not a new phenomenon, but certainly in the last four or five years, we saw an increase in hate crimes, an increase in attacks on both blacks and jews, tended to be the target populations of these hate crimes. And we were watching with concern in 2017 and then charlottesville happened and i found that moment so jarring because of how emboldened and unashamed the people that were marching with the tiki torches was. They werent hiding behind masks and cloaks. They were they had no shame in showing their faces. And i think that kind of emboldenment is directly related to the president s language, it seems to have empowered that effort. So when we started to see that this is a growing trend, a trend that our allies overseas were also seeing, those allies call it rightwing extremism. We tend to not call it that in this country, because it makes it kind of a delicate or a sore spot to talk about, but the reality is that the globalized White Supremacy movement tends to be seen as a rightwing extremist type of movement. It is violent, it is very lethal. And there have been more deaths in our country caused by that type of violence than anything that the president currently likes to label as domestic terrorism, like antifa. During my tenure, it was secretary nielsen, secretary kelly made any number of asks to treat this problem seriously, and while we were allowed to at a working level make some progress, there was no interest in taking this up to a higher level. It was never exactly explained why, but reading between the lines, it was made clear, this is not something that the president was willing to take on and it was best for all of us if we just kept him out of it and made progress on our own. So i only have a minute left. If you could keep the answer relatively brief, but youre a republican. Youre a devout christian. I guess the question is, how can you vote for joe biden . Yeah, thats a great question. It took me a while to get there, and over the coming weeks, i hope to be able to better explain it. It is complex and something i wrestled with. Obviously, i read the bible and went over verses and verses and verses about what god calls his people to. Its to honor and worship him and not to have other idols, to not live in fear, which is what i think a lot of the Republican Party is, is, we have to vote for trump because were fearful of the other guy, and quite frankly, it was recognizing that what prolife really means is to be able to protect life from conception to grave. And while the president gave a hat tip to the Prolife Movement with conservative judges and i am grateful we have those conservative judges on the court, the reality is that the rest of life was not valued or dignified in the way that he acts and in the policies that he implements. Elizabeth neumann, thank you so much, well have you back. Have a great weekend. We appreciate your time today. Thank, jake. In our health lead today, a dire prediction from a leading coronavirus model. 317,000 dead in the u. S. By december 1st. Thats the projection. And today, we saw once again more than 1,000 people in this country alone die from the virus. This as we saw three Mass Gatherings in the last day, from the last night of the Republican National convention, where few people distanced or wore masks, to other masked events such as the protests outside the white house and todays march on washington, where there have been masks, but social distancing has not been on display. As cnns nick watt reports. Reporter like those brave americans before us, we are meeting the challenge. Reporter but now, our president is leading by bad example. No distance, few masks, and many places prohibit gatherings like these. All brushed off by a senior white house official with this. Everybody is going to catch this thing eventually. One prominent model now projects around 135,000 more americans could be killed by covid19 by december 1st. Remember last week we were told youre going to start seeing the death rate really start to drop. Reporter but if that new projection is true, our average daily death toll, still hovering around a thousand, will actually rise. Right now, were also seeing record rates of infection in the dakotas, minnesota, and iowa, where the governor just closed all bars in the hardesthit counties, including some college towns. Because it is increasing, the virus activity, in the community, and its spilling over to other segments of the population. Reporter 8,000 cases and counting on College Campuses across the country, as students return. But heres the good news. Nationally, new case counts are falling. New yorks infection rate, the lowest since all this began. And the white house has announced the purchase and production of 150 million new 15minute tests. That really could be game changing. Before you go to school, before you go to work, it could catch a lot more of these asymptomatic cases that were currently not catching at all. Plus, theres vaccine optimism. If they demonstrate theyre safe and effective, you could have a vaccine available, i believe, under an emergency use authorization for select populations before the end of the year. Reporter the cdc telling governors, it is rapidly making preparations to implement largescale distribution of covid19 vaccines in the fall of 2020, asking states to be quick with their permitting process. But we cant afford a thousand deaths a day for the vaccine. We need to adopt a control and containment strategy in the United States. Reporter instead, the president s tacit message, up close, unmasked, totally cool. Now, in los angeles, the city has just filed misdemeanor charges against two tiktok stars who hosted house parties with a couple of hundred people. The City Attorney said that with 19 million followers between them, they should be setting a good example. Meanwhile, the president has more than 85 million twitter followers and just hosted more than a thousand people on the nations front lawn. Jake . Reporter you seem to be suggesting that we should have Higher Standards for the president than for tiktok stars. I take your point. Not suggesting anything. Reporter joining me now is the president and chair of health international. What was your reaction when you saw the scene at the white house last night and the march on washington today . The white house scene was a very dangerous scene. It is a super spreader kind of a case. You know that some of those people were unknowingly infected. Theyll be infecting others, and two weeks from now, were going to see the results of a number of those people in hospitals and a number of their contacts and the people closest to them ill and in hospitals, too. It made me very sad. I want to start with these new predictions from the cdc and the h im sorry, the ihme model. More than 200,000 deaths in the u. S. By september 19th. Thats their projection. They also project nearly 317,000 by december 1st. Pretty alarming. It is alarming. And its also very sad, because we dont have to have that. Lets hope that some of these new changes, for example, the rapid tests the tests that have just been approved, the abbott test, is a good test. It could be simpler. It could be a saliva test. It could be an athome test. But a 15minute test thats 5 is a lot better than a three to sevenday test that could be as much as 1,000. So that is good progress. And we can make more progress in that direction. I think theres a chance with tests like that, if we do Contact Tracing and we help people isolate, of making a really big difference to this epidemic, in a rather short period of time. But we have to be serious about what one of your reporters just suggested. Testing each other before we go to work, before we go to school, every other day. That means a lot more than 150 million tests. That means billions, tens of billions of tests. But fortunately, if you ever take a look at them, theyre easy to manufacture. We know how to manufacture those in bulk at low cost. This is some good news. I hope so. Nothing would make me happier than to be able to send my kids to school and test them every day and know that every teacher and student is being tested every day as well. Ihme found that if wearing a mask in public increased to 95 , which it is not right now, more than 67,000 american lives could be saved. Right now, the estimate mask wearing has declined to less than 50 . Do you think its a realistic possibility that we could have 95 mask wearing in public . You know, i wish i could say yes to that, but the experience tells me, its not realistic. I think what we have to do is look at the american experience, what we can do. And i think if we put things into peoples hands, like a very inexpensive home test, and we really what were trying to control is contagion, somebody spreading it to somebody else, we dont just test the worried or the ill, which the cdc just recommended against all good sense, we test the people who dont think that theyve been infected, but actually are, and we identify those who are contagious. And then help them selfisolate. We can make a big difference. And i think that, americans can do. I think by now the idea of mask wearing is so entrenched in the political right left kind of nonsensical debate, that theres Something Else that people will do, like you would do that. You would have your child and hope the whole school would have your children before they went to tested every day or every other day if it were simple. And i think thats something we can do and we should do. And we can work as i said, very happy that these tests are now finally coming along. You just alluded to the fact that the cdc changed its guidance and is no longer suggesting that asymptomatic individuals who have come in contact with people who have the virus be tested and there is really no Health Expert other than people who report directly to President Trump, and even some of them, who think that thats a good idea or makes any sense that we should be testing more, not less. Why do you think they made this rule . Do you think its because because they havent really given a solid explanation that makes any sense. Do you think its because President Trump thinks that more testing equals higher numbers of people who are infected, which is bad news for him politically . I mean, is that what you suspect is the reason . You know, im not a mind reader, jake, and its hard to know other peoples motives, sometimes even my own. But i can tell you wihat the ne effect of this is. Its extremely negative and is going in exactly the opposite direction. You know, we need many, many, more tests, not fewer tests. And surely, many more tests are going to pick up a lot more infected people. Fit looks like infection rates dropping in this country, thats because were testing less. It doesnt mean that the hospital rates dropping. It doesnt mean that fewer people are getting infected. And what we have just been talking about, a test thats cheap and available for us to do with our families every other day, is the exact opposite. We want to find people who are contagious, who are spreading the disease unknowingly and help them isolate themselves, so they dont spread it. Nobody wants to make other people sick. You dont want to do that deliberately, unless youre a very ill person. You want to protect the people you love and the people you care about. And we ought to make that easy for them. And thats the opposite. Youre asking the question, do i know, for sure, whats in the administrations mind and in the president s mind . I dont know. But i can tell you what the effect is. Its terrible. Sounds like a lot of opposites going on at the white house right now in terms of the of what should be going on. William haseltine, always good to have you on. Thank you so much. With the close of convention, we are now a month and a day away from the first president ial debate. Well discuss the two very different messages as we head into the final sprint of 2020. Stay with us. Take the good, with the bad live the life you want to have send it off, with a bang its looking really good [whistling] [indistinguishable muffled words] our 2020 lead now. The final sprint to november 3rd. With 67 days until the election, both candidates are poised to hit the trail in person and hoping for a boost from their conventions, though Vice President biden and President Trump presented starkly different views of themselves and the United States. Lets discuss with cnn senior political commentator, david axelrod. David, what most struck me about last night is the Republican Party and the white house going to such Great Lengths to say, you know, President Trump is actually a very different person when you get to know him, behind the scenes. Yeah, you know, what struck me about the two conventions was, i felt like the Democratic Convention was a realitybased convention. I mean, the portrait of biden, every party puts their best foot forward. Every party embellishes. The portrait of biden was largely the portrait of biden. The portrait of the country and where it is today was largely a portrait of the country and where it is today. Trump took a reality show approach, partly because the reality right now is pretty grim for him. And the goal of this convention was to paint him in a different way and to paint biden in a different way and make biden more threatening and trump more benign. Even as they wove throughout this law and order theme, that i think is going to be very central to his campaign from here to november. This is how the new yorkers Susan Glasser described the campaign. The spectacle suggested a president entering the Reelection Campaign not strong, but faltering. A president whose prospects left unvarnished by lies and fantasy were so poor that his strategists had to reinvent him as a different person altogether. Do you think put on your political reporter hat you used to be with what, the suntimes tribune. Oh, sorry, the chicago tribune. Do you think, when you look at the two men, i bhemean, obvious biden is ahead in a lot of polling, do you think that trump is running obviously from behind . Yeah, i think i think he is running from behind. Polling reflects that anecdotal reflects that. And look at where the country is, jake. 180,000 people dead, 10. 2 unemployment. Hes hovering near 40 in his approval rating. These are all indications that you would look at to see and you would hypothesize from that the incumbent is in trouble. And the only way for an incumbent to come back in a situation like that is to really go hard at his opponent and demonize his opponent. And you know, trump does that with a certain elan anyway. So it comes nationally to him. So you saw it in his speech last night and throughout this convention, biden and the democrats, you know, as godless, socialist threats to your safety and our way of life. And i think youre going to hear a lot more of that between now and november. And what will be interesting is to see how biden deals with that on a debate stage, on september 29th, which i circle as perhaps the most important day in this whole campaign. Senator rand paul was harassed by protesters when he left the white house last night. There have been images that are not particularly pleasant to watch of protesters and have been for months. Conservative columnist george will, whos certainly no fan of President Trump, says that biden needs what he calls a Sister Souljah moment, a reference to bill clinton in 92, who condemned a black rapper, who had mused about killing white people, a way to show middle class white people, hey, im willing to take on people on the left. Do you agree . And might some of these protesters be an opportunity for him . Well, first, let me say, i think that that image was probably the image that the trump team liked the most out of last nights events, because i think they are capitalizing on these. You can see their message is all about, you know, anarchy and mobs. So when they can demonstrate it in with live photos and film, that buttresses their argument. And i think it is an imperative on the part of biden and all democrats, to denounce that kind of violence and do it strongly, even as they focus on jacob blake and the other incidents. So thats very important to ward off what you know is coming. All right, david axelrod, thanks so much. Always great to have your insights. And meanwhile, the vast majority of the worlds scientists continue to remind us that this is only going to get worse until p fuels that burn.
