debate in atlanta. an event that could change the course of the november election and you can watch it here with us. good morning, i'm dana perino. bill is off today. >> sandra: a long day and night. >> dana: an extra scoop of wheaties. >> sandra: the first showdown in four years between president biden and former president donald trump and you can watch it here on the fox news channel. we have coverage all day long. pre-game show at 8:00. carry the debate at 9:00 p.m. and stay with us for post-game analysis as well. >> dana: the stakes could not be higher. polls show a deadlocked race and a majority of voters say they will be watching. >> sandra: president biden is coming off a week of rehearsals at camp david. former president trump has been on the trail. we'll see how the prep strategies play out in mere hours. let's get right to jacque heinrich at the white house. >> according to the new poll, majority of voters, 73% say they'll watch tonight. 16% say that this debate could change their choice for president. now trump says he got good reviews last cycle when he had a more tempered approach. that's what he is going for tonight. former president -- president biden is trying to find ways to throw off former president trump tonight in that debate. ways to get him angry. some of it is already playing out in atlanta. the dnc has billboards set up around the city welcoming trump back to the peach state as a convicted felon. the biden campaign is studying trump's recent statement to find out what gets under his skin the most. jabs related to january 6th and his 2020 election loss. president biden wants to appear as the adult in the room and so he might need to also mind his own temper. >> radical left. >> will you shut up, man. >> we have ended this segment and move onto the second segment. >> that was a productive segment, wasn't it? keep yapping, man. >> trump is asking for policy talks on the campaign trail. he called to a black business leaders' round table and predicted the moderators tonight will help his opponent. >> it would be great for cnn -- i think it would be very good for cnn actually in terms of its credibility. >> he expect biden to benefit from his week long study session and week in politics but might get help from performance enhancing drugs. an accusation biden sees as a sign of vulnerability. >> they like to complain about debates. the president will be there tonight. we still assume donald trump will be there as well. they play these games because they know on the issues that matter most to the american people donald trump is a loser, right? >> president biden heads to atlanta around noon. when we see him it will be the first time seeing him since the 20th, sandra. >> sandra: thank you, jacque. >> dana: let's bring in guy benson, karl rove and mark penn. karl, to you first as a tee-up. the new head-to-head polls from "the new york times" and quinnipiac show trump with a lead. a fox news poll last week had it a tie. these two polls right now. what about the biden team going into tonight with that? >> big stakes tonight. frankly big stakes for both candidates. first of all, which biden will show up and which trump will show up? the cogent biden? the calm trump or the raging trump? and which theme predominates. both men will try to press a particular theme. biden will be trying to make it a choice between he and donald trump by going after trump in deeply personal ways and trump is going to attempt to make it a referendum on the policies of biden, namely the cost of living, the inflation that we've suffered through in this country and weak national defense and, of course, the border crisis, which is a great vulnerability for the administration. >> sandra: this is michael watley rnc chairman on the message he says trump will put on the debate stage tonight. >> we had a record number of people working. we had real wagesing up for every american fame plea and the most secure southern border ever. these things matter. we had a solid standing in the world. so when we talk about where america is today, do you want to be able to turn it around and say where are we going to take america over the next four years? that's the vision part he will put on the table. >> sandra: how can biden take that message head on? >> well, he can't. that's why he has to change it into that is do you want the chaos and rage and anger we saw? he will try to provoke that on stage tonight. he said he never accepted the fact he lost the election and tried to overturn it. are those things as important to voters as the cost of living way up, border not secure, a general sense that america is not as respected in the world. in a way it is reflective of 1980 in which ronald reagan said are you better off today than you were four years ago after we were suffering through double digit inflation, interest rates and unemployment. trump has the easier course tonight. the question will he take it? in order to make the best advantage of tonight, he has to be mr. calm, mr. restraint and not be rage filled like he was in the first debate in 2020, which was an unmitigated disaster as he attempted to steam roll biden on the debate stage. >> dana: last night kevin mccarthy said biden will be prepared and everyone has to think about that. who is the most important audience for biden tonight? he hasn't completely locked down the democrats. >> the most important audience for everyone in this debate are either weak democrats or nikki haley voters. any look at the strategy this far out in a campaign would say you are crazy to be pitching to your base. and yet both campaigns -- i shouldn't say that. trump has moved into targets outside the normal and the biden campaign hasn't yet shifted the strategy. i think mike tyson rules govern here, everybody has a plan until you get punched in the face and exactly what we are going to see, they both have a plan going in. i will be calm and factual. joe biden is incredibly well prepared with 16 people. i used to run a process like that. he will have the facts and figures and then we just don't know what's going to break out when they actually start throwing punches at each other, which is what they'll do. >> sandra: guy, what are your expectations for tonight? >> struck by the clip we just played of the biden campaign official saying when you look at the issues that people care about the most, donald trump is a loser. well, that's not what "the new york times" poll shows. the top two issues are the economy and border. donald trump has big leads on both of those. when you ask people in the same poll regardless of what your top issue is who do you trust more on it, trump 51, biden 37. so on the issues, it is a loser for the current president and could be a winner for the former president, which is why i think we'll see a lot of baiting of trump on the 2020 election, january 6th, abortion is coming as well. i think trump has an advantage coming into the night to the extent that the polling looks good for him, nate silver put out his model that has to make democrats nervous giving trump a 2-one chance to win. a huge amount riding on this for joe biden, enormous amount of pressure on him because if he does poorly tonight, i think there will be widespread panic within the democratic party. to the point mark was just making, if you look at what biden will have to do. trump has the republican base for the most part locked down and he needs to appeal to the undecided middle of the road people. biden has to do the same thing but also needs to appeal to his own base. key elements of that base which aren't fully in his camp right now, that's a really tough thing for anyone to do, like a really talented debater and speaker to do. he is joe biden. so heavy, heavy burden on both but i would say especially on the incumbent. >> dana: mark, do you like there is no audience tonight? >> i do. you know, i always go back to the kennedy/nixon debates. i wish we had journalists from more than one network sitting in a pool and asking questions with no audience and speakers who have to stay within their time lines. what can i tell you? >> well, let me start where you ended, a message to the families, is, of course, our hearts are with them given their suffering. the safety and security of the american public is indeed our highest priority. >> dana: alejandro mayorkas offering condolences after a string of brutal crimes across the country allegedly at the hands of illegal migrants. today one of those victims in a brutal murder will be laid to rest in houston. 12-year-old jocelyn nungaray allegedly killed by two venezuelan migrants. nate foye is there today. >> there will be private and public portions of today's ceremony. the funeral for 12-year-old jocelyn nungaray is set to begin at 2:00 p.m. eastern timeless than two weeks after authorities found her strangled to death and body thrown into a shallow river. prosecutors say at the hands of two illegal migrants from venezuela. investigators say at the time of their arrest, one of those migrants had bite marks and scratches on his arms and that indicates that jocelyn fought back during the attack. d.a.'s office is now awaiting test results to determine if a sexual assault happened. if they find it did, the two migrants would be eligible for the death penalty. fox business correspondent hillary vaughn asked summer lee for her reaction to jocelyn's murder. watch this. >> can i ask you quickly about the 12-year-old girl in houston that was tortured? >> i'm fine, thank you, sandra. it is hard to go through this literally every day. this is what i've been doing for the last 13 years, not just dealing with my son's death, but all the other tragedies that happen and particularly now because of the biden administration. it makes it tough. >> sandra: in the wake of the death and funeral today of jocelyn nungaray, the 12-year-old girl who was brutally assaulted and murdered down there in texas, alejandro mayorkas held that press conference yesterday and did take questions and while he said his hearts are with the families grieving at the result of lost loved ones, he still went on to insist that president biden's border policies are working. listen here. >> we have seen a more than 45% drop in u.s. border patrol encounters since the president took action. we are attacking the smuggling organizations that prey on the vulnerable even as the smugglers try to undermine our actions. >> sandra: let me get your response to that. >> like everything else he says, it is a complete and utter lie. he manages to creep around the edges when he says something that has a little bit of truth to it but basically although in his mind biden's border policy is working. they wanted millions of people to come into this country. they don't care how they came in or what they did to any american citizens or legal permanent residents. they have callous disregard for the safety of americans despite his nonsense comment that the american public's safety is his number one priority. this man should be tried for treason. impeaching him was not enough. he has violated the invasion clause of the u.s. constitution. what you see happening now will be happening for decades from the people they've let in because they never leave. and i don't care who gets elected, there is no way to properly and quickly deportal of these people. >> sandra: understood and no one can imagine how you feel in your heart having lost your son back in 2010 and what you go through every single day. but in is the result of the policies. we can put it up on the screen. southwest border encounters under this president biden, versus his predecessor. this is biden 7.98 million. under donald trump 2.4 million. that's an increase of 227%. as far as the polling is concerned, it shows up that people are not happy. they don't like what they are seeing happen in this country and the influx of migrants that has affected everyone all over the country, not just border states and communities. those that disapprove right now 63% of president biden's handling of immigration. so what do you want to hear debated on that stage tonight, donald? >> no, listen, i think what the state of polling speaks to is the fact it will be an incredibly close and competitive presidential election the way that all modern presidential elections are. 2016 was close, 2020 was incredibly close. this will come down to tens of thousands of votes in a handful of states. why tonight is on opportunity for president biden to communicate directly to those voters that will decide this election. tonight he will present a clear choice between himself, who is fighting for the american people every single darks and he ising to be debating against donald trump who is now running his campaign as a convicted felon fighting for himself. that will be the fundamental choice we present on the debate stage tonight and we campaign on for the duration of the presidential election and confident if we continue to present that choice to the american people they will side with joe biden once again like they did in 2020. >> dana: one of the things polls showed donald trump's conviction didn't seem to have an impact and enthusiasm on the republican side is very high. i want to get your reaction to van jones from last thursday. this is his take about how biden has to do tonight. watch here. >> because if biden goes out there and messes up, it is game over. if he walks out there and a week later lower in the polls it is panic in the party. if he goes in there and handle himself against donald trump a runaway train, lock motive, raging bull, this guy deserves another shot to be president because that's tough. >> dana: do you agree it's game over if it doesn't go well for biden tonight? >> well listen, the president is ready and excited to debate tonight. i think if you want to talk about donald trump he is obviously not going to present the donald trump at his mag a rallies on the stump. he will have to answer for all the things he has been saying at the maga rallies and answer for the role he played in overturning roe v. wade, out there on the stump saying the extreme state level abortion bans are working out brilliantly and the threat he continues to pose to american democracy. you have republicans like adam kinzinger and jeff duncan from georgia endorsing joe biden because they understand that if the sacred cause of america will continue to be democracy, there is a home for you in joe biden's campaign and the one continuing to carry this nation forward. donald trump, his demeanor may not be the same that we see at the maga rallies but the problem for him he will have to answer for all things he says on those rallies on the debate stage tonight and the president is focused on going into tonight. >> dana: i think it's pretty stark and get your take on it. fox news voter analysis from 2020 had biden winning black voters at 91%. the presidential preface among black voters today in the last poll just 73%. in fact, "the new york times" poll that came out today in june of 2020 trump had 5% of the black vote. today it's 30% of the black vote. jim clyburn said this if you could pull it up here. the older black voters need to talk some sense into trump-inclined children saying they should try to talk some sense into their kids. if you believe that the parents should have kept their mule to school and kept you at home. what will biden be able to talk to black voters tonight who walked away from his campaign? >> i think one of the things that tonight is, it's an opportunity to break through to a larger slice of the electorate that hasn't been paying as much attention as you and i have, right? you still have a lot of americans who have not begun to tune into the choice in this election and increasingly fragmented media environment opportunities like tonight allow the president to talk about his historic record of accomplishment. record low black unemployment during this term. black wealth growing by 60% since before the pandemic. fastest rate of black small business growth in a generation. it is an opportunity to contrast that against the damage that donald trump caused to black america when he was in power. the only things that went up for black america at the end of donald trump's first term were the unemployment rate and uninsured rate. >> dana: black voters are telling >> the incredibly -- >> dana: a lot of black voters are saying the economy is the most important thing to them and looking back and saying i paid a lot less or charge my customers a lot less than i do now. can biden provide some sort of explanation for that and a vision going forward that would be different from what people felt during trump? >> absolutely because the economy that donald trump inheristed was on the rise. by the end of his term in office he had run it into the ground. black businesses were shut erred across this country. >> dana: because of the pandemic? >> because of his mismanagement as president of the united states failing to manage a threat to the american people. that was the end result. the mess that joe biden inherited and the progress we have made since then speaks for itself. >> dana: do you think that president biden would have kept businesses open? would president biden have kept businesses open during the pandemic? >> i think the president has proven that he is far more capable of handling the job of commander-in-chief and protecting american citizens which is the primary duty of the president of the united states. he has proven that since the day he took office and the economic record of 15 million jobs, the work he has done to cut black child poverty in half to lower costs for americans. capping the cost of insulin to $35, capping prescription drugs at $2 thousand for annually. the work we'll do in a second term to make sure a billionaire pays less in taxes than a school teacher or nurse? donald trump's only economic policies for his second term is more tax breaks for the ultra wealthy, moody's is sighing donald trump policies would cause another inflation. that's the choice the american people. >> dana: you represent your boss very well and make a good case and we'll see how all those issues are dealt with tonight. i do want to ask you this. will president biden commit to the abc debate on september 10th regardless of the outcome of tonight? >> yeah, we have committed to these two debates. we challenged trump to two debates tonight and september 10th. president biden will be there. we hope donald trump will as well. >> dana: one last question. i have second hand anxiety whenever i watch a debate for whoever is on stage. how do you like to watch a debate?
