City leaders are activating the fletcher avenue floodgates at black hawk bridges, depending on flood forecasts. And preparations are well underway in cedar rapids. Forecasters say the city could see the cedar river reaching its second highest level ever next week. That would cause major flooding, although not as bad as the historic 2008 flood. The city says buyouts and demolition of hundreds of homes should help reduce potential damage this time. Theres significant benefit to what the city has done since 2008. Those acquisitions allow, in many of the areas, the river to breathe, and so strategic measures we have taken will put us in a much better position to face this kind of event. The cedar river is expected to more than double flood stage. Again, that would be the second highest crest on record, but still well below the 2008 level.
