But as soon as they arrived things turned deadly. An altercation ensued between the detectives and mr. Gulet. Both detectives were killed at that scene. Reporter once back up arrived, the area was shutdown and a perimeter went up. Then about 10 minutes later deputies and police cornered gulet on doyle street. A short chase ensued and gunfire was exchanginged between go let and a team comprised of Sheriff Deputies deputies and Santa Cruz Police officers. Gulet was killed at the scene. Reporter but the area remained on lock down impacting residents, teachers and children in several nearby schools. My son is in lock down along with my two nieces and my sister. I am angry and scared. I just want my child. Reporter by 7 30, four hours after the ordeal started, children were escorted out of school and safely bussed out of the area. Back here live now, and there are still a few residents who are not allowed down that road, but i did speak with an officer a few minutes ago, and he told me that in the next three or four hours everyone will finally be able to go home tonight. Abc7 News Reporter alan wang is live at the Santa Cruz Police department tonight where people have been coming by all evening with flowers. Is that right . Yes, a steady stream of people are coming by here to pay their respects tonight. They say this is a tight knit community. Many of these officers know each other outside of work. Some of them even attend the same churches. Their kids even attend the same schools and now they have lost two members of the family. For the first time in a Santa Cruz Police departments history the flags were lowered killed in the line of duty. Sergeant butch baker and Elizabeth Butler. Elizabeth is a 10year veteran of the Santa Cruz Police department. Assigned to investigations. She leaves behind her partner, peter, and her two young boys. Sergeant baker was close to retirement and had a son who works for the department. Butch was a 28year veteran of the Santa Cruz Police department. He was a longtime friend of mine and a mentor. He leaves behind a wife, two daughters and a son who actually works for my department as a Community Service officer. Reporter while officers gathered at the Police Departments Community Room to mourn citizens formed a small memorial in the courtyard for others to drop off flowers and pray. A volunteer chaplain attended the officers meeting. Right now it is a time of connecting and supporting one another and listening and talking and just trying to set a tone for the next few days and few weeks. Down the street the church opened its doors to the community. Most here were unaware of the officers identities when we spoke to them. You know in santa cruz you are 1 degree of separation from knowing someone who is in the spotlight or who has been a victim of tragedy. I found out about it at the gun at the antigun rally, at the town clock. People were talking about it saying can you believe this is happening right now . There is a shooting occurring, and we are having an antigun rally here downtown. It has been a tough day here, but this department is getting a lot of support. Condolences are coming in from other department, and the Santa Cruz County Sheriff Deputies are filling in for many of these officers. They will be patrolling the streets tonight. Reporting live in santa cruz, alan wang, abc7 news. Alan, thank you. We are learning details about the killer, jeremy gulet, a man with a history of run ins with the law. John alsto in is live with that part of the story. Abc7 news spoke with his father and we learned more about his troubled past going back at least five years. His father says gulet was a former marine who flew blackhawk helicopters and recently moved to santa cruz. In 2008 he was convicted in portland, oregon after several peeping tom cases. In one of those incidents he removed a window screen to watch a woman who was showering. He was carrying a gun at the time which went off during a struggle with that womans boyfriend. He was sentenced to three years probation, but he was sent back to jail after peeping into windows during a visit with his probation officer. The father of the 35yearold suspect told abc7 news his son was a really good kid who had some problems. Again he says his son was a former marine who flew blackhawk helicopters in the military. He recently moved from berkeley to santa cruz where he got a job as a barista at a coffee shop. He could not afford his own apartment on his salary and had to move in with two roommates. According to the santa cruz sentinal, on friday gulet broke into the home of a coworker from the cough coffee shop and made inappropriate sexual advances. The coworker filed a Police Report and spoke to police as late as this afternoon. Abc7 news. Thanks etch have. Before we move on lets take you through the developments in the santa cruz officer shootings. It started around 3 30 this afternoon when officers went to a home on north bransiforti avenue to followup on an investigation. Thats where they say Jeremy Goulet fired at police and killing two officers. A half hour later he was shot and killed in a brief shootout as police pursued him. The sheriff says around 9 30 officers were wrapping up a search of every home in the area for any possible outstanding suspects. No more danger was found. He feel theres is that longer therefore a threat to the community. Coincidentally, a rally against gun violence was underway in downtown santa cruz as the two officers were gunned down. There was this picture of the rally which was organized in response to the Elementary School shooting in newtown, connecticut. Stay with abc7 news for continuing coverage of the police shootings. Developing news, an Oakland Police search for several people following a chase through the city. Sky 7hd followed the Police Pursuit near 86th avenue and olive street about 8 30. The suspects hoped out of the car and they took off running. The car was still rolling as police followed with guns drawn. Police have not said what lead to the chase or if they have any suspects in custody. Relatives of two cyclists thought to be missing in peru were thought to talk to the couple tomorrow. They havent been heard from for more than a month. Their family went public with the concern they met with foul play, but today the Government Officials in peru announced they were found. The minister of Foreign Trade and tourism told abc7 news this afternoon that the couple was seen by an official of the National Police examine local residence. So the three of them are going by boat. Yes, it is an issue federal regulators say doesnt appear to be a safety issue. The numerous people who say they have experienced the problem firsthand strongly disagree. This man from fremont is concerned about the safety of his family. I have a sixyearold and threeyearold. I dont take them in this car at night. So is jason from uh arinda. He avoids driving at night if possible. I leave work early in some cases. Both own a 2012 toyota prius, and both say their vision through the windshield at night makes driving unsafe. This is video of the view through amids windshield he posted on youtube. Amid and jason say tail lights, streetlights and on coming headlights and traffic lights appear blurry. They seem larger than normal and can be seen in trip plaw cet. Jason recalls the day he almost hit a pedestrian because he was blinded by the multiple images of light. I was freaked out. I didnt really understand what was going on. Reporter amid told me the socalled ghosting affect is best seen on dark streets from a distance of about 50 feet. Will we see it when we drive around . We will stey right now if we drive around. Lets go. The problem he has with his windshield is not always evident. It usually cant be seen on welllit streets or closer distances. And then as we get closer to the light the ghosting uh tect tect affect seems to disappear and the multiple arrows we saw merge into one. Jason and amid are not the only ones complaining about this. A forum on the website prius chat includes postings by 40 prius owners who say they have the same problem. Prius 4 owner said on the stoplight i can see three images of the red light. In the middle, the real one, and two ghost images, below and above. John hoskins says dealer denies warranty cufnlg and says the problem was caused by the environment. And then from mike, hopefully there will be a recall and get these defective windshields replaces. Some people will say it is just not that bill of a deal. I think it is a big distraction while driving. I just dont feel safe enough. Second thing, this is a brandnew car. I dont expect to have these kind of issues. We found a dozen formal complaints since january 2012 to the national Highway Traffic Safety Administration or nhtsa. They said they found no evidence of the safety detect trend in these vehicles. Nhtsa will continue to monitor the issue and will take appropriate action as warranted. Toyota agrees and told 7 on your side by email that toyota is aware of the small number of complaints on the nhtsa website regarding windshield availability for 2012 through 201 for 2010 to through 2012. We made arrangements to evaluate some of the vehicles. The Glass Company in tokyo manufactured the windshields. A u. S. Spokesman for agc did not get back to us with answers to our questions. Toyota has agreed to replace jasons windshield, but his attorney, mark anderson, said it didnt improve the situation enough. I replaced the windshield once, but it didnt help much. They dont have a fix. Our investigation has caught the attention of industry experts. Herb is a former member of the society of automotive engineers auto glazing standards committee. After seeing the youtube videos he plans to bring this up at the next meeting. I want them to investigate the cause of the distortion and to indicate what kind of testing might be required.
