we're also following what appears to be a fire burning in san jose. live picture right now looking at the smoke coming up. according to the first responder app, pulse point, this is off 101 near mckee road. no word yet from the fire department on what's burning, how bad it might be. we're working to get those details for you. all right, let's get to meteorologist rob mayeda. rob. yes, there's heat, but there's also chill. as we've talked about. yeah, in the bay area. 50s and one hundredths on either side. right now we're watching that heat advisory around the bay area. and we have seen temperatures inland anywhere from ten to more than 15 degrees above the average. look at livermore 101 degrees today, average high only 85. we had those upper 90s around concord as well. san francisco, right. on the average today, downtown san jose, pretty close to 90 degrees right now, still upper 90s out towards walnut creek. much of the interior portions of the east bay, seeing those mid to upper 90s around the tri-valley. still more 90 south of downtown san jose. so between now and 10:00 tonight, eve is in his temperatures start to cool down. the heat advisory still in effect for the inland east bay santa clara valley from downtown san jose, south and for a few areas up across the north bay. a one day heat advisory as we head towards tomorrow, some cooler changes, wind picking up. we'll start to break. bring it edge off the heat for our inland valleys. but as those winds pick up, we'll have to watch those inland hills still very dry, especially from the heat of today. a closer look at the wind speeds hour by hour and how much cooling we might see in that sunday forecast coming up in a few minutes. thank you. new at six. another reminder to keep water safety top of mind when trying to keep cool in brentwood today, a toddler nearly drowned at a home on clarksburg place. first responders say the two year old lost consciousness before they arrived, but was breathing and conscious when they got there. as a precaution, the child was flown to children's hospital in oakland. first responders say it is vital that parents never lose track of their children in the water. parents should be aware that their children's, even if they're even if they're swimmers, good swimmers to keep an eye on them at all times because you don't know what's going to happen. things can change really fast and develop rapidly. so you can't take your eye off the children, especially if there's multiple kids playing in a pool or around water. always important advice this time of year. experts also recommending making sure that kids take a break every hour when swimming the hot temperatures, keeping the fire danger high. this weekend in sonoma county, crews are making good progress on the point fire. this has been burning for a week. cal fire says there are now 80% contained. fire has burned just over 1200 acres between geyserville and las lomas. one firefighter has been hurt. three structures destroyed, two others have been damaged. now we are halfway through the year. it's already been a busy one for cal fire crews across the state. cal fire says more than 30 wildfires have sparked across california over the last couple of weeks. we so far this year, flames have burned nearly 100,000 acres. that's between january and now 100,000 acres. the biggest fire is burning in la and colusa counties. the early spike in fires is causing some concern because we haven't yet reached the hottest months of the year. well, martinez was full of emergency vehicles and first responders this morning getting ready for som they hope never comes. the city was helping neighbors prepare to evacuate in the event of a wildfire. the evacuation drill centered on two streets in that city that are at real risk of wildfires. police went door to door just like they would under real evacuation orders. neighbors were encouraged to participate to the fullest and to meet at the rally point in ignacio plaza. that's where several agencies and organizations were set up for an evacuation education expo. i think it's a great idea. i feel like we should be doing this everywhere, up in the hills. yeah, this is definitely helpful for all of us to practice. all city residents were invited to the free expo, whether they were part of the mock evacuation or not. well, safety is top of mind for lake fest in oakland. police said earlier this week it would be stepping up enforcement at the lake merritt event. it comes just days after violence broke out following a different unsanctioned gathering in that same area. nbc bay area's christie smith is in oakland with a look at how the city's new police chief and organizers are working to keep people safe. the lake fest oakland event drew people who told us they wanted to have a good time, but also wanted to come out and support there was music, vendors and d some new additions. todayom, it's a family event. it's really feel good. jeanie korn was at lake merritt today enjoying lake fest. i am proud to be in oakland and i miss the old festivals at the lake. that used to happen. she just heard about the event and wanted to be sure to be a part of it. like two days ago. just right after that, ummi ali sad shooting, i said i want to support it and i'm really happy to be here on wednesday night, gunfire erupted as an unsanctioned juneteenth event wrapped up and an illegal sideshow broke out. 15 people were shot and several police officers were hurt trying to break up crowds. today, police have restricted traffic and have a higher presence in support of lake fest. oakland we also have an extra amount of officers out here working today to provide a visual presence and visual deterrence for those who want to kind of disrupt the event. organizers did make changes to, but say those were planned before wednesday's incident. still safety is a priority. fencing is new. we are taking precautions. so when it comes to coming inside and checking bags at the heart, they say, is a family friendly event. it's a representation of oakland all around and family, music local. we have two stages. we love to give platforms to local artists. so far so good. no problems and it's a little bit older crowd too. and it's family, so it's a lot of family people here, from vendors to people out and about. those who came were here to enjoy it. i miss the events. i miss how everyone comes together and, just the feeling of, community. and we're missing a lot of that, i think, in society right now in oakland, kristie smith, nbc, bay area news. well, there are still no sign of oakland mayor sheng thao after federal agents searched her home thursday, several agencies, including the fbi, irs and postal service and agents to the mayor's home and several properties linked to the duong family. family owns california waste solutions, a company that holds the city's recycling contract. the fbi says no arrests were made yesterday. mayor tao's lawyer says she is willing to cooperate with the investigation and has nothing to hide. tao plans to hold a news confer sometime next week. take a live look at the state capitol as the governor and lawmakers end weeks of negotiations over the state budget. governor newsom and democrats who control the state legislature struck a deal today for a final 2425 budget. the spending plan comes to $298 billion. leaders solved the nearly $47 billion deficit with $16 billion in cuts. they also declared a statewide fiscal emergency in order to pull the remaining funds from california's rainy day reserve. let's talk about that $16 billion. that comes in part from a delay in the minimum wage increase for health care workers, reduction of some affordable housing funds, and slashing $750 million from the state prison system, investigators in san francisco are trying to figure out what led up to a deadly shooting. the shots were fired just after seven last night near mission and eighth streets. police say they found the victim with at least one gunshot wound. that person was taken to the hospital where they later died. investigators say one person has been detained and connection with the shooting, and we are learning about a shift in leadership. at the san mateo county sheriff's office, the agency announced yesterday. undersheriff chris young is leaving the sheriff's office after less than two years in the role. the undersheriff is second in command to sheriff christina corpus. in a statement, the two said they came to the understanding that it was best for the sheriff's office to go in a different direction. the former deputy chief of the san francisco police department, dan perea, will be taking on the role of undersheriff. he is set to start july 1st. a reminder for bart riders in oakland this weekend. bart has replaced trains between three different lines with a bus bridge. crews are repairing power cables and working on signage. there will be delays up to 40 minutes, but that bus service is free. the closures will affect rockridge, macarthur and 19th street stations. the red line is also shut down through tomorrow. riders can get around that, to and from millbrae on the yellow line. trains will be running again on monday. still ahead, they made it to space. but when will they come back? we've got an update on boeing's historic space mission and why its astronauts are stuck up there for now. plus, i want a burrito and a taco bowl. that's what i thought about every day when i, after the first five days when i started to, like, kind of realize that i might be in over my head. yeah, he's alive and back home. tonight we are hearing from the man who survived ten days in the wilderness of the santa cruz mountains. amazing details about his rescue, and our heat advisory continues out towards the tri-valley. still 95 degrees in livermore, but tomorrow some cooler changes around the coerrn hey, flex. considering there's a heatwave, it's kinda chilly in here. oh, that's because i'm pre-cooling the house with the ac before 4 pm. then i'll turn our thermostat to a comfortable 78 or higher that way i could stay cool later. ooh, what about me? you're never cool. oh. mountains. but tonight, a santa cruz man is home safe and sound. his three hour hike turned into quite an ordeal. felix cortez has a story, but i didn't bring anything because i thought i was doing a three hour hike to go to work. lost in the woods for nine nights and ten days. sherm with only a flashlight and folding scissors. it would be more than a week before the hiker would be found, so i kind of just hiked each day. i go up a canyon, down a canyon to the next waterfall, and just sit down by the waterfall and drink water out of my boot. it was tuesday w 34 year old lucas mclish went for a hike in boulder creek and ended up getting lost. i felt comfortable the whole time i was out there i wasn't worried about. i had a mountain lion that was following me, but it was cool. he kept his distance. he was, i think it was just somebody watching over me. problem is, mclish didn't tell anyone where he was going. by the time father's day rolled around sunday, his family started worrying and filed a missing persons report. the search was now on some nights, although i. i just had to trust god that he was going to be okay and that was hard to do. some nights mclish drank water from creeks, ate wild berries, slept on a wet bed of leaves while yelling for help, and thinking of his next meal. just help. help, i'm over here. or is anybody out there? or i want a burrito and a taco bowl? that's what i thought about every day when i, after the first five days when i started to, like, kind of realize that i might be in over my head. but thursday afternoon, someone finally heard his cries for help. boulder creek fire deployed a drone and spotted his location. a k-9 tracked him down and mclish was escorted out of a remote canyon, reunited with family. met a lot of people because i had more people come to me and tell me how much they love my son. i didn't realize that so many people in this town love luke. that was felix cortez reporting. now we have an update on that fire burning in san jose. you're looking at it live. there's now a traffic alert for 101 at alum rock avenue as that fire burns right next to the freeway there, two southbound lanes of 101 are blocked. that's the chp giving us that informationd they're asking anyone heading that way to expect delays or better yet, avoid the area. okay, now do the starliner's return to earth. nasa and boeing once again postponed the starliner's voyage home from the international space station. nasa says there are small helium system leaks and problems with thruster performance. the two person crew is doing a full review of the technical issues for now. it's unclear when flight commander butch wilmore and pilot suni williams will make their return. nasa says it is letting the data drive its decision making in this process. nasa is giving us a sneak peek, by the way, at its latest project. part of it has a mission to the moon next year, and you can check it out yourself in the east bay, the chabot space and science center opened a new exhibition. today, it's a reimagined version of the nasa ames visitor center. at the center, visitors will get a peek at a prototype for a new kind of lunar rover that is set to launch to the moon next year. you can see things like spacesuits as well from past missions, and design and build your own space. robot center is celebrating the grand opening all weekend. well, the 4th of july, less than two weeks away. that time of year when obviously a lot of people buy fireworks and also a time when law enforcement makes an effort to buy them back from the community. the san mateo county sheriff's department held a buyback event today at the courthouse in south san francisco. people could drop off the fireworks anonymously and in return, they got $10 per pound. organizers say the department gave out $1,000 in just the first few hours, and they encourage more people to come to these kind of events in the interest of safety. we have personnel here that can collect them that's familiar with how to handle these things, and we're trying to encourage people to turn them in because, number one, we want we want people to be safe. we don't want them disposing of them by themselves. and we're trying to prevent fire and danger and other activities that can can come about. and there are more fireworks buyback events scheduled. the next one is next week in redwood city. now, if you want to watch the pros do it. talking about fireworks, we can tell you where to go. we put together big list of fireworks shows happening all across the bay area. just head to our website nbcbayarea.comsearch 4th of july. you can also find the list on our news app. that time already. all right rob mayeda here. now and rob we're talking about heat and we're also talking about chill. yeah the ocean temperatures are really quite cold. unusually cold for this time of year. so that sea breeze got a little extra bite out there. we got the clouds 50 on one side of the bay, 90 and 100 degree temperatures inland. and those areas in the 90s, and actually san jose included under the heat advisory till 10:00 tonight though san jose starting to drop down in temperatures 85 degrees. hazy skies around san jose. we'll talk more about that air quality coming up in just about a minute. still near 90 in san rafael and over towards livermore. 95 degrees high today, 101 considering the average high is just 85, this is a little bit hot for this time of year, to say the least. 16 degrees above the average. today, san francisco, though in the comfortable zone, upper 60s, but on the other side of the peninsula, down towards half moon bay and pacifica. we've been stuck in the 50s today. same story in santa cruz, folks trying to escape the heat out of the santa clara valley, running smack into some low clouds and mid 50s there along the waterfront there in santa cruz. so here is the cause of that strong ocean air conditioning effect. low 50s. that sea breeze will feel different later this summer, once those ocean temperatures go back up into the upper 50s. and maybe even low 60s towards the end of summer. so right now, when those winds are onshore ocean temperatures near 50, it feels quite cool. now, that will also lead to some cooling for inland areas tomorrow, as the wind speeds pick up, we'll have to watch these areas, especially solano county. interior portions of contra costa and alameda counties, because these areas, after the heat of today, yes, the good humidity recovery for the morning. but as those afternoon breezes pick up, the marine air effect really being kept around the inner bay as you head inland out towards fairfield and livermore, you'll see those humidity values drop into the 20% range as those breezes pick up. we'll have to watch that for tomorrow. some patchy low clouds and fog for the morning, sunshine for the afternoon. repeat of what we had today with 50s and 60s to start off your sunday morning. but here's where the changes start to appear for tomorrow afternoon. shouldn't be near 100 degrees inland, but still upper 80s to low 90s. so a little bit cooler technically, at least not enough for a heat advisory for those inland valleys for tomorrow. now notice the temperature trend as we head into monday and tuesday. we'll hold those upper 80s to low 90s inland for the next few days. what might change will be the fact that we could begin to see some high level clouds drift up from the south. now these will be mid and high level clouds associated with tropical moisture coming up through the state. right now. the best chance of any thunderstorms. of course, we have to watch for dry lightning as well as we go through summer. right now. doesn't look like we're going to see that locally, but out towards the sierra and down around some of the mountains of southern california, there's a chance we may see some isolated showers or afternoon thundershowers around midweek. for us, just some extra high clouds for now. headed our way around tuesday. san francisco staying in the 60s. a little bit warmer as we head towards next weekend, we should see high pressure making a comeback as we have apparently locked in these weekend warm ups. yeah that could be the next chance of 90s once we get through those monday warming up again next saturday. remember the first half of the year though? i mean, it was like 85% warm, seemed like rain. so people were out today enjoying the sunshine. all right. thanks, rob. well, are the splash brothers about to break up? whoa. just ahead, the new trade rumors in the nba as klay thompson's contract is up in the air nice to meet ya. my name is david. i've been a pharmacist for 44 years. when i have customers come in and ask for something for memory, i recommend prevagen. number one, because it's effective. does not require a prescription. and i've been taking it quite a while myself and i know it works. and i love it when the customers come back in and tell me, "david, that really works so good for me." makes my day. prevagen. at stores everywhere without a prescription. we're in the middle of... seizing the date! in the middle of the perfect pairing ... and parking it here for the night! so come get away... together... illinois— the middle of everything. in the sharpshooting guard have hit a standstill. tompson's 2019 contract ended this year, according to the athletic. there is no contract offer on the table right now. there's still a window open for that new contract, but it's looking less likely as time goes by. friction has built up between the franchise and thompson, who may opt for a fresh start elsewhere. he is reportedly seeking a contract offer of at least three years. i don't know if the warriors are offering three years or not. we kind of heard this coming, right? it's a tough decision. i'm glad i don't have to make it. he's done so much for the organization he did for the warriors. but the reality is the last two years they have not been good enough. yeah speaking of not being good enough, let's do that. hurts. this hurts. terry. the giants hit it all. makes me sad. another bump in the road. all right, cheer up. there's always tomorrow. who led the charge in the cardinals comeback victory over the orange and black? sorry, terry. i got to do this stick just ask the giants, the orange and black falling to eight games under 500 away from the bay area this season after blowing an early lead against the cardinals, this series moving to saint louis after playing one game thursday in alabama that historic game top three michael conforto ropes a double to right. a run scores, giving the giants a42 lead. you can clap for that one, terry, but alex burleson's all right, close your eyes. was the story of the game. he tags jordan hicks for a deep three in the fourth. by the way, hicks spent his first five major league seasons in saint louis, then burleson again. jacks a two run shot, this time in the sixth. the cardinals rally to win it 9 to 4. the giants have lost four in a row. two good swings got beat by the long ball today and we move on. obviously some big swings today were were the difference in that game. you know we scored three runs in the first. feel pretty good about where we are. and all of a sudden the two run homer in a hurry and then had a couple more big swings which can, you know, change the game in a hurry. speaking of big swings, changing the game in a hurry at the coliseum in oakland. the a's taking on the twins. bottom one jj bleday launches a souvenir to right. that's a solo home run tying the game at one. but minnesota answers in a big way in the second. the twins scored seven runs, highlighted by a three run shot from manuel margot. the twins go on to win it 10 to 2. it's a big weekend for indycar series driver nolan siegel, the 19 year old palo alto native is racing in his own backyard at laguna seca. he qualified near the back of the pack today for sunday's race. but you know what? that's okay. he's still getting used to all his new teammates. it's very hard to put, you know, a result based expectation on this weekend. i think for me, my goal is to get to know the team, meet everyone. you know, there are still new faces for me and people that i meet every time i walk in the trailer. i think that if we can have a good, smooth weekend, learn each other a little bit and, you know, prepare ourselves better for the future. that's the main goal. and the race is on
