In marshfield we saw the storm damage these homes and now in ice. As the Atlantic Ocean came crashing in and flooded these streets at high tide, all of the water now is frozen in place. The blizzard of 2015 is for the record books. Under siege by the ocean, the storm surge punching out a 50foot hole in the sea wall in marshfield, massachusetts, one of several communities at the mercy of the tide. It makes sense to get out and to a safe shelter. Reporter hard to find shelter on an island. Nantucket battered by winds 80 miles per hour. Virtually everything we had has failed including as of right now our 911 is not working. It was stated by one individual we had to revert back to 1950 technology to stay in touch. Reporter people across new england call this blizzard wicked and not in a good way. Snow everywhere, nearly 3 feet in places not counseleding the mounds created by plows. If a car wont get you there a snowmobile will do the job. The storm that slammed new england pummeled eastern long island. But the main punch of the storm only glajsed new york city and northern new jersey. The statue of liberty watched the blizzard come and go. Some people felt the same. Couldnt have been worse. We got off easy. Reporter a forecaster with the National Weather service apologized tweeting he made a lot of tough decisions expecting us to get it right and we didnt. Once again im sorry. A city shut down, businesses and Public Transportation closed. Add in the cost of snow removal one expert estimated 1 billion in losses across the northeast. But its not all about dollars and cents. As the snow piled up, so did the images of the storm on social media, people sharing the amazing views from a romp in the snow on video to a moment of sheer joy frozen in time. These homes also frozen in time here in marshfield. Yesterday, just about everything, ever where, was shut down. You know, everybody pitches in, everybody does something, they have got a plow on the truck they use it, if they have got a house thats warm they let the neighbors join them. You know, it does very well in a storm like this. This was a tough one, it was the worst ive seen in the ten years i lived here. I know you had to use the school as a shelter, the hospital lost power for a while. And i understand actually during the height of the storm there was a baby born. Yes. Actually i think there were four of them potentially going to be born. We were a little concerned about that because theres no way to get off island if something would have went wrong. And how are you doing today . Now its the cleanup begins, the sun comes out hopefully, you are able to assess the damage. Are you getting what you need . How bad do you think this will be . I think were going to find a lot of damage on the erosion area on the east coast of the island and probably the south shore. Down town i know weve got some structures that are having issues. The water was up to their foundations, so maybe even higher. Our building commissioner is going to be down there at sunup starting his inspection. Food service establishments, Grocery Stores were without power for a long time, thats going to require the Health Department and those folks to make sure food is still safe. Well, we ended up getting almost 10 inches at central park and 12 inches at laguardia airport. But, the bulk of it was on the island and as you moved up into new england. And the american model actually handled this better than the european model. So, nobody likes to be wrong, we didnt get three feet of snow in the city but i think we saw a lot of people make the right decision to shut things down and in fact, mayor de blasio is coming up to talk about it. What do you think of the meteorologists in the Weather Service apologizing . I think he felt a lot of pressure and nobody likes to be wrong, and i think he stepped up and said hey, we blew it. Were human and were going to try to do better which we all feel in the weather business. Thankfully many were safe in the storm. Thats the bottom line. Savannah, 16 bomb threats against commercial planes in the last four days, and this is a new method of delivery authorities are having to deal with. All of them coming on twitter. This morning the fbi is investigating another round of online threats against airlines, all posted tuesday night. Including one targeting delta flights. Saying, the 4 planes will explode in 10 minutes. Delta responded to the tweet, saying it considers all threats serious and planned to report the comments for further review and action. The now suspend accounts sent threats to delta, southwest and american airlines. Three of the targeted flights landed hours before the tweets were posted. Two others landed shortly after, and another had yet to depart. All six arrived safely. Its just the latest in a series of online threats against airlines this week. Five other flights made emergency landings over the weekend after similar threats were posted on twitter. Two of the planes were headed to seattle. This is the first time ive been in a situation you had two aircraft fairly close in arrival time for them to be considered a security situation. Another one of the threats prompted f16 fighter jets to escort two planes to safety in atlanta. All those were later cleared of security concerns. And arrived safely at their destination. An employee with the national geosfashl Intelligence Agency he turned himself in. New attention on sexual assaults on College Campuses. Two Football Players just convicted of rape. Gape gutierrez has the story. This morning two university Football Players are in jail, bail revoked and lives changed forever. This case has given the community an opportunity to talk to each other and our children especially our boys about the way we treat women. After an emotional twoweek trial, a jury took just three hours to convict brandon and cory of several counts of aggravated rape and battery. Two others are awaiting trial and pleaded not guilty. They argued the young men were not guilty of rape but a College Culture of binge drinking and sex led to the incident. Im sorry. I never intended on hurting anyone. I was extremely intoxicated and i would like to extend a personal apology. A 21yearold student had been seen passed out drunk. Video showed him carrying the woman to his dorm accompanied by teammates. According to prosecutors, he took pictures and video of the assault and shared it with friends. The conduct revealed was profoundly disturbing and utterly unacceptable. The conviction comes amid a renewed National Conversation about campus sexuality assault and an article in Rolling Stone that alleged a gang rape at the university of virginia. The federal government is investigating dozens of schools for their handling of Sexual Violence case. I think this case is a wake up call for campuses to take rape seriously. They are convict and carry up to 25 years in prison. Sentencing is set for early march. For today, gabe gutierrez, nbc news. When a sinkhole begins to open it is often dramatic swallowing entire buildings or as was the case in the louisiana bayou, an unbelievable sight. A stand of 40foot cypress trees gone within seconds. Nova on pbs examines these events in their sinkholes, sinkholes, buried alive. Trying to get to my brother. I thought i could hear him yelling and screaming to help. They occur around the world, but geologists believe there more in florida than anywhere else on earth. We joined nova. At devils den for a rare look deep inside a sinkhole. This is an example. What used to be the floor of the ocean, believe it or not. Sinkholes develop when lime stone is soaked by rain. Thousands of years of raindrops seep through the powerous lime stone to the underground aquifer. In a drought that drops and the lime stone weakened by the erosion of the rain often can no longer support the weight of the earth. This happen without warning and opens up . As the lime stone eroded one day, boom, the ceiling opened up. You have this giant cavern. This beautiful place exists because of it. This year it was on the ground. Predicting sinkholes is a challenge. They ventured less than a mile into the aquifer in uncharted hidden river. A scientist pinpointed his exact location. It was 280 feet below a fourlane highway. All the makings for another sink hole. Its like a trap door. It is also a time capsule because they found amazing fossils. This is a fossil from a mast don that maybe 700,000 years old and even on our dive we found these, including what to me looks like a tooth. We always think its related to obesity. Were suggesting that the sugary drinks cause a spike in insulin which can start periods earlier. Interesting. We should point out that American Beverage Association released a statement, neither the study nort body of science shows that sugar sweetened beverage consumption shows early on set of menarche. What is the advice as a doctor . I think this is more evidence that you are to limit the sugary drinks in children. We know that its bad for obesity and teeth. It could be changing your body metabolically that could have long term consequences. Important that we know that early periods are associated perhaps with an increased risk of breast cancer. You should be focused on weight necessarily. Again, youre putting on muscle. Its a big process. It weighs a lot more. Focus how your clothes fit, what the next step is, on changing your routine up. He was frustrated in the beginning. But then when the weight started coming off, it was immediately what are we doing next month . I want to do more. A little more success. The south is faced with a crisis and within a period of two months the movement spread to 65 cities. Among them rock hill South Carolina where a group of students from Friendship College join in. They come here to the then and dime to sit in these chairs to challenge the segregation rules. Here we are as teenagers. All but one are still alive and six met with us remembering all too well facing an angry crowd that day. I was afraid. They were arrested before they could sit down. I remember being thrown to the floor. By whom . Police officers. They were dragged to jail. When they put me in the cell you know you have been there. Instead of paying bail to get out, the friendship nine chose to serve the 30day sentence of hard labor. Thats chilling to see that. Jail no bail strategy caught on and reenergized the Civil Rights Movement running out of bail money. It empowers the nation. At the right place at the right time. They have their sentences overturned and inspired by the author simkimberly johnson who wrote a childrens book. I have this overwhelming degree of respect and love. I know that they cared about the community. Prosecutor kevin said he too is honored to help overturn the convictions today. More than a dozen online threats made against passenger planes just this week posted last night targeting delta, southwest and american airlines. And it plans to report the comments for further review and action. One of the weeks threats prompted f16 fighter jets to escort a couple planes to safety in atlanta. Theres no confirmation of any of these threats, but were hearing theyre related, but its a scary thing when anybody can get on twitter, facebook or whatever and say im coming for this plane at this time and theyve got to divert them. Enterovirus may be a possible cause, but not the cause of paralysis. We tried a number of different treatments throughout the country and nothing has seemed to work for the children. Thats frustrating. For now, mckenzie can only wiggle her left hand, feet, and use facial muscles. We wants me to fix it and make it better and i cant. It rips my heart apart every day. Whats going on here . We talked about a fm in some of the cases and not all being related to enterovirus. Is there a connection . Thats what they are trying to figure out. We had a rise in this virus. It is not a new virus, but it caused severe respiratory illnesses and this illness that was not new. Whats important is even though the kids might be testing positive for the d 68 and the respiratory secretions, they havent done able to demonstrate in the spinal fluid and thats what they need to say definitively its a cause. An example would be polio which is an enterovirus and we can demonstrate the virus so we know its the causative agent. What are are the symptoms . By definition its a pair lytic symptom and experience weakness in a limb. The thing that makes it peculiar is it doesnt follow a pattern that we have seen in other illnesses. Some kids like this poor child has it in the neck down and some experience one leg or facial muscle weakness. It can vary. As the segment pointed out we dont have any tried and true therapies. We cant treat it if we dont know whats causing it. We dont know a direct cause or the patients immune response to the virus that is triggering this inflammation. There a few i had spoth seize out there. Anything preventive we have been doing . The answer unfortunately is no. Its probably some virus. We go back to what we say about Infection Control and that comprises hand washing and sanitizing and not touching your hand to your face, etc. We dont know what causes it so you have a virus and you cant do anything to prevent this. Some of them have been treated with various therapies we used to treat these acute neurological syndromes and what they think the best intervention is rehab and therapy. Everyone is on it. Even garlic gloves to add flavor. You brown it up and it takes like if you break it up, like seven minutes or so and i add the butter nut squash. The smaller you cut it, the quicker it cooks. You can buy it cut up if you want to. Is it okay if i buy it cut up . Make sure you look at it and its not moldy and dried up. You add 1 1 2 cups of water and let it cook down until its sauce. You leave it uncovered. You cook the pasta. Extra flavor. Now take a look at this. Give it a stir, al. Since you like to cook, once the squash is soft, i do this. Add the Parmesan Cheese which is one of the five ingredients and create like a creamy texture. It falls apart nicely and creates an orangey sauce without adding cream to it. When do you combine it . As the pasta is cook this just takes 15 minutes to make dinner. You add the pasta in there. Start tossing. I add arugula. I like my greens with my pasta. Its peppery and you dont have to if you dont want to. You toss it together. Finish with Parmesan Cheese. Thats beautiful. For meat lovers, this is all it. This is a flat iron steak that is seasoned with a little salt and a nice hot pan. Thats the most important thing to get a seer. You are just using salt . Thats it. The steak is basically the shoulder part of beef. It is nice and flavorful. Lots of marbleization. We will not low it at each other. We will put it on top of the meat.
