we're back with more of "today" on a tuesday morning, 6th day of april, 2010. it is a tragic and sad day in moncoal, west virginia, where at least 25 coal miners lost their lives after a massive underground explosion. four miners are still missing, but rescuers were forced to call off the search for those miners temporarily this morning because of high levels of methane gas. inside studio 1a in new york, i'm matt lauer, along with al roker and msnbc's tamron hall. natalie is on assignment. >> as we've been reporting, this is the worst coal mining disaster in a quarter century. the blast occurred 3:00 local time, but safety officials say the mine has a history of violations for not properly ventilating methane gas which of course as we all know is highly combustible. >> there are, however, air-tight chambers inside the mine stocked with food, water and enough oxygen for trapped workers to survive for up to four days. meantime, president obama is offering his condolences and any federal help that west virginia may need to deal with this disaster. let's get a little more on the situation now from nbc's ron mott in naoma, west virginia near the site of the accident. ron, good morning to you. >> reporter: hey, matt, good morning. officials are saying that it will be a while before they know the exact cause of this explosion but the governor said this morning he's confident they will indeed find out what caused this tragedy yesterday. but suffice it to say, with more than two dozen people dead, this is by far the single-worst day of mining in this country in more than a quarter century. >> we have some terrible news to report. >> reporter: overnight, officials made the grim announcement. >> we've accounted and found 25 miners that are deceased. which left four miners that were unaccounted for. >> reporter: throughout the evening and into this morning, the rescue effort had grown more intense and nerve-racking with loved ones frantic for information about the dead and missing. based on reports, this is an initial theory of what investigators suspect happened at the massey energy company mine around 3:00 eastern time monday afternoon. a car carrying nine miners was headed out of the shaft when suddenly an explosion. 7 of the 9 in the car were killed, two were injured, leaving a group of miners behind them and lots of desperate uncertainty. >> that's my dad, man. i don't know if he's all right. they won't tell us anything. >> reporter: officials say the priority is still rescuing potential survivors and say the mines have emergency refuge chambers with food and water where miners could survive for four days. >> my immediate reaction was i just pray to the good lord that they were all able to get to the safety zones and have the oxygen they needed. >> safety is always our primary concern. >> reporter: massey touts its commitment to safety in this company video, though there have been three other deadly accidents at the upper big branch mine in the past dozen years. in 2003 a worker was electrocuted repairing equipment. in 2001, another killed by a falling rock. in 1998, a miner was crushed in a roof collapse. monday's tragedy is a painful reminder of the sago disaster, also in west virginia just 150 miles away. on january 2nd, 2006, 13 miners were trapped after an underground explosion. for two days the nation watched anxiously as rescuers struggled to reach them. when they finally did, 12 of the men were dead. only randy mccloy survived clinging to life. he spoke to matt several weeks later on "today." >> do you remember being rescued? >> no. i had so much carbon monoxide in my lungs, i couldn't even breathe much less speak properly. >> reporter: mccloy spent three months in rehab to recover from his brush with death. mining, no matter the safety improvements implemented over generations, remains a dangerous line of work. in west virginia, families, friends, rescuers and mining colleagues holding out hope for their miracle. >> all we can do right now as a community is just come together and pray because if you're from here, we're all coal mining families. >> reporter: the process to ventilate that mine is already underway. the governor says it can take 12 hours or more before rescuers can get back in there after having halted that search early this morning because of those poisonous gases. >> ron mott in west virginia this morning. earlier this morning i spoke to the family and pastor of 62-year-old benny willingham who was among those killed in the explosion and who was just five weeks away from retiring. i began by asking how they learned about the accident. >> i was on my way home from my son's ball game, baseball game, and my daughter called me and said that my dad had not called my mom when he came out of the mine. and we met at my mother's and we just waited and waited. and actually, the coal company still has not called to tell us that my dad is dead. we've heard other ways. >> obviously there's a lot of confusion and frustration among family members right now because with some of the dead not having been identified yet, and others remaining missing, i imagine nobody wants to jump to conclusions and make a mistake. michelle, had your dad talked about the dangers and the risks of the business, or is this something that miners tend not to talk about with their family members? >> no, my dad discussed that with us. he's been a miner for over 30 years. behe lov but he loved it. that was his life, besides his family, was the coal mines. >> nick, the cruelest of ironies is that benny was set to retire after more hand 30 years in the mines. he was set to retire in just five weeks. had he spoken about what he hoped his life would be like after working? >> he was really looking forward to it. he and my aunt, my parents, they were going to take a cruise to the virgin islands the end of may. he was very, very excited about that. it's tragic that in the blink of an eye something like this can happen. >> his wife is edith. michelle, that's your mom. how's she holding up? >> she's not. she's just waiting to wake up. hoping it was a dream. >> that being repeated for so many other families in west virginia now. still confusion as to those four miners who are missing and what their fate will be. our thoughts and prayers go out to all those families. let's get a check of the morning's top stories from ann curry who's over at the news desk. ann, good morning to you. there are also developments in the mine accident in china where 33 are trapped. toxic gas and water are keeping rescuers from reaching them. 115 miners were pulled out alive on monday, survivors saying they ate sawdust and paper underground to stay alive. five miners died in that accident in china. president obama unveils a new u.s. policy on nuclear weapons today. saying it will encourage other companies to reduce nuclear stockpiles or refrain from developing them and it also pledges that the u.s. will avoid nuclear retaliation against chemty, biological or cyber attacks and it renounces the development of new nuclear weapons. in iraq, coordinated bombings this morning killed at least 39 people and wounded more than 130. the blast targeted apartments and other residential buildings. toyota's facing a record fine, more than $16 million for not telling officials quickly enough about safety problems with sticky gas pedals. the department of transportation says toyota hit a dangerous defect for months from u.s. officials. mexico's president got a firsthand look on monday at damage caused by sunday's 7.2 magnitude earthquake just south of the california border. a strong 4.9 aftershock last nightcaped a day of more than 100 smaller tremors. two people died in the quake and at least 45 businesses and about a dozen homes were destroyed in the hardest hit city of mexicali, mexico. a 10-year-old pare air girl is recovering after pretty bad accident over the weekend. her thigh was impaled by a fence post as she was trying to retrieve a ball. doctors performed surgery to remove it from her leg and they expect her now to make a full recovery. it is now eight minutes past the hour. back over to you two, tamron and matt. >> she's lucky. ann, thank you. let us get a check of the weather now from mr. roker. >> that's right. things cooling down just a little bit out here. a good looking group. where you from. >> virginia. >> what's your name?
