Hurricane sandys blamed for at least three deaths in the caribbean. Sandy made landfall today in southern cuba with heavy rain and winds topping 110 miles per hour. It lashed parts of haiti and jamaica on wednesday. An arrest in the death of jessica ridgeway. 17yearold Austin Reed Sigg appears in court today in connection with the girls death. Ridgeway disappeared earlier this month while walking to her elementary school. Her body was found five days later. Officials say sigg will also face charges in the attempted kidnapping of a 22yearold jogger back in may. A michigan man whose wifes death last month was tied to the National Meningitis outbreak says he is now hospitalized for the same illness. 65yearold george carey said he began having severe headaches last friday but is feeling better after three days of treatment. Carey and his wife lillian were both treated for back and neck pain at a clinic that used contaminated steroids made by a massachusetts pharmacy. That drug has been blamed for the outbreak. A new report is out this morning about just how much caffeine is packed into energy drinks. Tom costello has the latest. Good morning. Natalie, good morning to you. These drinks are very popular because of the jolt people get, especially when theyre trying to stay awake, but caffeine, as you know, is a stimulant. And because these are considered dietary supplements, they dont fall under fda regulation. Reporter the headlines this week have been full of warnings about the caffeine levels in those high energy drinks. Popular with high school and college kids. Now Consumer Reports is out this morning with its own investigation into the real caffeine levels in the drinks and those drinks that dont specify caffeine levels. Consumer reports tested 27 products and found that five of the cans that list caffeine actually have levels at least 20 higher than what their labels indicated. And 11 of the products dont specify their caffeine levels at all. Since theyre considered a dietary supplement, theyre not required to. Its important for people to understand what theyre buying and drinking. And if that information is not even available on the product, thats the problem. Among those drinks that dont list caffeine levels, monster. We first reported on monster last march and the death of 14yearold anise who died of cardiac arrest. The official cause of death, cardiac arrhythmia due to caffeine toxicity. She had consumed two monster drinks in less than 24 hours, roughly 480 milligrams of caffeine, five times whats recommended for teens. Her mother is now suing monster. Shes the last thing i think about at night. I visit the cemetery every day. Anise did suffer from a common heart defect and monster insists its products are safe telling nbc news it does not believe that its products are in any way responsible for anises death and unaware of any fatality anywhere that has been caused by its products. But the fda this week confirmed anise is one of five deaths that could be linked to Drinking Monster Energy drinks. Monster points out the biggest drink contains 240 milligrams of caffeine, less than many popular coffee drinks. Still, the chief of cardiology at Georgetown University hospital says caffeine overdose is a real problem. Between the caffeine, the sugar, its affects on blood pressure, potential adverse effects, i think its really difficult to justify a case for children, young adults to be using these substances right now. E. R. S across the country have reported a dramatic surge in caffeine overdoses in recent years. Now, some lawmakers want to give the fda the authority to regulate high Caffeine Energy drinks as much as it sets caffeine levels in soft drinks. Is it too much to ask the Dietary Supplement Companies to go to the fda and at least register their product before they put them on the shelves across america . The American Beverage Association tells nbc news it has adopted voluntary policies on energy drink labels and marketing to children. Some do offer warnings, some dont offer warnings. Natalie . According to a study from multivitamins, living together caused women to gain weight. About 33 of women said they ended up eating more after moving in with their partner. You can already see those feeder bands coming into southern florida. Right now, weve got hurricane warnings up for cuba and much of the bahamas, weve got Tropical Storm warnings from key largo up to daytona beach, in the north, Tropical Storm watches, you see that rain moving in. The path of the storm right now. The National Hurricane center path brings it up and through the bahamas later today on into friday. And then makes a turn to the right and hugging the coast, but not quite right along the coast. Now, heres where things get very interesting. When you look at two main computer models, we look at the american model, the gfs and the european model. The american models in yellow, the blue model is the european. And as the weekend progresses, you can see the blue model stays closer to the coast and then late sunday, early monday hooks a left and comes into the delmarva peninsula. What that means is that the northeast, much of the northeast, the megaopolis is on the northeastern quadrant, thats the strongest quadrant of the storm. Absolutely. Absolutely. Because for a teenager, especially, facebook is your identity as a kid of that age. And i think this is the idea of, you know, when parents you want to set the right example. You want to be a model to your kids. And if they were trying to invoke the punishment you were being fresh with us and they were being fresh on her Facebook Page i think were missing the Bigger Picture here. My parents my mom barely knows how to put on her iphone, much less post a picture. Id be like you guys posted pictures. I dont care what they are, that is fantastic. You should be the parent, though. So gray when it comes to women, their hair color, they freak out, but in this case in the home, its the most elegant new trend, right . It really is the hot color. And i truly believe its the right color for right now. We are exposed to so much. Think about it, your style can change as quickly as your facebook update. So you really need a color that goes with everything and that is gray. And for all those naysayers who say its dull, blah, i say you are wrong. And i had a friend who put it well, they said gray is the color of light. It is true when you think about light and you think about its many dimensions, thats what gray is and goes with so many things. And allows for a perfect accent color to throw any color on top. This is the easiest way to transform a room. Right. This all started with my own exploration. I recently did a house and painted it seven different shades of gray. And here are five of the grays i used. I wrote about it in the Washington Post called seven shades of gray, i havent read the book. Youve read it. I havent. Anyway, these are the grays and these are Benjamin Moore colors. But you can see the gray can go from green to blue to a much deeper, darker tone. And obviously youre going to pick tones that work best for the feel of your room. Like in my husbands office, i used a dark gray thats gray flannel, very masculine. But in my bathroom, i wanted something a little bit lighter and more blue and clean gray almost a swedish gray, which is why i went with coventry gray. I always recommend testing colors, you can go to any paint store, get boards like this, buy a sample paint color, test them, put them in your room because grays will change with light. I think we have pictures of the home you were describing. We do. Lets talk about also some of the other ways that you can use gray if, for example, you dont want to commit to a whole wall or room looking gray. Well, what im here to demonstrate here today is it really is a trend. And you see it on everything. This chest, its so pretty, based on a 1930s design from bungalow five, its in a gray lacquer. Again, this also alleviates when you have too many brown in a room, a lot of times in the decorating world we say add white or pops of color. The lamp is from ballard design, a subtle, easy way of adding it. And over here in our living room area. Another way is through fabric. What i find very interesting is this is the color it only comes in a few colors and it comes in mostly grays. So obviously this trend is across the board. You can mix it with any color and thats whats great about gray. Think about gray flannel pants, you can put it with any color sweater. So here i have pillows. Pink and green, and this chair its 230 from home goods. Wow. What an incredible purchase. And here is gray in an a cut. Lets move over to the dining room table. Because heres an elegant way you can see, as well, to serve up a table full of gray. You dont have to do white plates, but here we have plates from kate spade in this wonderful gray. Glasses which are from ikea. This isnt like a lot of money you have to spend. The table cloth is actually from mia and finn as are the napkins. Even if you think christmas, you can add in red plates and give it a pop or blue for easter. I love it. Ive got some painting in my future. Thank you. After my father passed away and sadly my stepmother dana shortly after, we couldnt imagine not being involved. My sister and i joined the board in march of 2006. And there are 6 Million People living with paralysis in this country, 1. 3 million with a spinal cord injury, and we wanted to continue their mission and honor their legacy. You said something very poignant. You said although its not a role your father wouldve chosen, but its one he chose to embrace. How did he embrace it . Well, as you said, he found himself in this in a position and he just advocated for Research Dollars and he got himself out there. He couldve chosen to just, you know, sit at home and be a recluse. So were going to start here with sofia. This is sofia, happens to be your daughter. Yes. And you can see half of her face is already done like a butterfly. What im going to do its like a multicolored kind yes, and this is where the magic happens for beginners too. This is called a rainbow face pack. Can you look at me, babe . And then im going to put on one of the eyes. And you can see all the color and all the shading is done. Kind of looks air brushed. And you get all of that color in one swoop. How does that feel, sofia . Weird. Its a little cold. Such a ham. Such a ham. And then you add in the black work. And this is where you get the beautiful outline. So youre highlighting what youve done. The first thing you do is lay down the color and then the second thing you do is add you dont have to wait for the one part to dry . Not at all. Oh, wow. Very nice. There we go. Theres the eye and you would kind of do the bottom that way. And luca, your son is doing the web slinger look. Weve done half of his face, as well. Okay. Im going to grab this. Usually you wet this oh, luca said, mom, i love you. A thumbs up. Youre doing great. Were going to start with the white paint on lucas eye, and that were going to do in a triangle shape. While youre doing that, i want to bring in a couple of others. Lets bring in olivia. And shes showing off the royal princess look. Come on in, olivia. That is beautiful. Now, this, olivia has a little bit of a sparkle to her. She does. And we used the same rainbow with olivia, except we applied it with a brush. This looks so complex. Its actually very easy to do. Wow, thats pretty cool. How do you like the way it looks . Yes. Yes, yes. All right, lets bring in alejandro, hes a dinosaur. I know. Wow. Are you a Tyrannosaurus Rex or a raptor . Whichever. Whichever. This is the same kind of paint . This morning on todays kitchen, our question, whats on the menu . How about a classic sunday dinner pot roast with vegetables. David venable is the author of the new book in the kitchen with david, qvcs resident foodie. Comfort food to take you home. Good to see you, david. Good morning, sir. Pleasure to be here. Pot roast is about as comforting as you can get. Well, absolutely. Growing up in my house, al, mom had beef pot roast every other sunday growing up, and it was the only day of the week she let me get into the kitchen when i was very young and help her out because she was getting ready for church. Shed have me sear off the pot roast. What weve already done is floured and seasoned this. Why do you flour it . Creates that crust that holds your seasoning, so you get the nice outer crust which will add to the flavor. And weve left a lot of flavor in here. All that on the bottom. Were going to add to that beautiful white onions, fresh garlic that weve smashed, and a little tomato paste. And whats nice about this, well hit this with a little salt, pardon my reach. Want pepper . Yeah, a little pepper, and then really let these caramelize and cook down because the onions are going to absorb so much of the flavor of the beef and then transfer some of their flavor back to the roast, which is really, really nice. And get this on a nice hot pot and this will go in the oven in a little while. But what really is exciting about this recipe, its so easy. All the recipes in the book are accessible, recipes and ingredients we understand, and really dishes that you remember, kind of the dishes that take you home again after sunday dinner. You bet. What were going to do, weve caramelized onions. Okay. Before we transfer the roast back in here and put it in the oven, were going to deglaze this pot with red wine. And actually, if we had more time, we would let this reduce down by about half. Right. What this is doing is releasing those bits of flavor you were talking about on the bottom of the pot really giving us that wonderful flavor and adding so much back to what were doing. Now, what were going to do is then grab our roast here and about a 4 our 5pounder, its a big job. Were going to add beef stock to this. Some people say chicken stock, but you go with beef. I do. I figure if youre going to go beef pot roast, go beef all the way. Thats right. And beautiful fresh herbs. Nobodys ever said thats just too beefy. Nobody ever said that about pot roast. And what youre going to do now is cover this and get this into the oven. Were going to roast this or braise it for about 2 1 2 hours. Do you check it to make sure the liquids yeah, you can add more beef broth, add water if you like that. And then after about 2 1 2 hours in the oven, were going to add fresh, wonderful root vegetables. Were going to do some carrots and potatoes. Turnips if you want. Absolutely. People always make the mistake, shouldnt you let the meat rest . You should. Because just like a casserole needs to reabsorb juices, meat does the same thing. Needs to rest for about 10 to 15 minutes and allows it to reabsorb the juices. Wow. Then you get that nice, beautiful slice of pot roast along with some great roasted vegetables, and it doesnt get better until you use some of this beef gravy. That straight from the pot . Absolutely. Sure, absolutely. And nice, youve got a nice spinach salad. Mom always taught me to cook with layers of flavor, theres bacon in there. And how about chocolate Peanut Butter pie . Oh, my goodness.
