Studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. And good morning, everybody. Welcome to today on a chilly Tuesday Morning. I saw the bank thermometer, had to do a double take this morning, 11 degrees here. 11 degrees and yet you have the feeling people waking up in st. Louis, oakland and oakland. Lets get right to our top story. Tens of millions waking up to the chilliest morning of the season, below freezing temps from the deep south all the way to maine, and al is feeling the chill out on our plaza. Hey, good morning. I got caught off guard. I didnt have my coat. Matt actually lent me this coat. The weather man didnt realize it was going to get cold this morning. Wow, the headline is i can wear your coat i never thought that would happen. Anyway, hey, lets look at some video. Winter snuck in a little earlier i mean, this is duxbury. They had thats route 3 and they got some oceaneffect snow came in. Cars off the roads. Big problems yesterday and the snow is gone but now the cold is here. Why . Well, here it is. Big area of High Pressure now dominating bringing the winds out of the north. Look at these current temperatures. Its 7 in buffalo. Feels like 3 below and 5 below up in bangor. It feels like 6 below in boston, 16 in charleston and 13 in detroit. Now, heres what were looking for tailed as far as high temperatures are concerned. Its going to feel like 16 in buffalo 24, in new york, 31 in charlotte and 33 in louisville, but heres the good news. This is the worst of it, all right. After tomorrow youll see, again, temperatures still today in those way below normal temperatures, but then temperatures start to mild up. 39 in portland, 47 in new york washington, d. C. And chicago looking at a temperature of 42, but lets not get cocky because even though its going to be nice and mild next week, i hate to use these two words, polar vortex. I knew it. Maybe by the end of next week, so well have the details coming up a little bit later. Get your polar vortex fashion collection ready. Cant wear matts coats. Im going to wear Dylan Dreyers coats. See you in a couple of minutes. Lets turn now to the president ial campaign and a new National Poll offering a glimpse of where things stand in both the republican and democratic races. Lets start with the gop and nbc National Correspondent peter alexander. Hi, peter, good morning. Reporter hey, matt, good morning. For republicans, 2016 is starting out a lot the same way 2015 ended, Donald Trump Holding on to his significant lead. Here you go, just out this morning, the latest nbc new survey Monkey Online Poll shows trump nationally at 35 , 17 rubio you see there in third and perhaps as importantly Trump Supporters are more set on their pick than others. Better than half of them saying they are not going to change their mind. But as long as im number one, were talking about those polls. Another full house for donald trump in massachusetts, packing them in and kicking more protesters out. Get them out. Bye, sweetheart. Get them out, please. They remind me a little bit of hillary. They do. No energy, no stamina, no strength. Im donald trump, and i approve this message. Reporter hours after trumps first ad hit the airwaves a fact check of his footage. Policifact says thats not mexico, its morocco, Trumps Campaign manager saying the edit was intentional telling nbc news, no expletive its not the Mexican Border but thats what our country is going to look like. Picking up the pace, 60 stops in 48 hours across iowa and New Hampshire. Ted cruz with nbcs hallie jackson. Two weeks ago every republican candidate was attacking donald trump. Today, every republican candidate is attacking me. Reporter the contenders now on a collision course as accusations fly over who is the real serious candidate. This from cruzs superpac arguing marco rubio is not ready to lead. I know i have a debate but ive got to get this fantasy football thing right. Reporter rubio staffers mocking cruz with his impressions of the simpsons. Release the houfnltds excellent. Reporter and Rick Santorum highlighting cruzs dr. Zeus reading on the senate floor. You want someone to read one he ll of a bedtime story, ted cruz is your guy. If you want to protect america and defeat isis, Rick Santorums your president. Reporter all right a mud pit of may he had with weeks to go. Thats not all. You have marco rubio and chris kasich and marco rubios superpacs getting into the fray and the only top tier candidate not caught in the crossfire right now is donald trump who untouched. Peter alexander, thank you. Democratic side, Hillary Clinton trying something new to brush off attacks from donald trump as former president bill clinton hits the campaign trail on his behalf. Nbcs Kristen Welker is in sioux to you. Reporter savannah, good morning to you, and secretary clinton is in a strong position today, according to our nbc News Survey Monkey online pot. She now leads Bernie Sanders nationally by 17 points, but the race gets a lot tighter in the early voting states, and now with former president bill clinton back in the game, the clintons are hoping to solidify her support. Making his 2016 debut bill clinton is back on familiar turf, campaigning for his wife in New Hampshire. Clinton never mentioned donald trump by name but did take a not to ban all muslims. We dont want to run away from the place weve been. America is a place that welcomes all people. Reporter the former president brushed off a barrage of attacks from donald trump carefully responding when asked by nbcs Andrea Mitchell about trumps tactics attacking clintons own infidelity. The republicans will have to decide who they are going to nominate. Reporter for her part former secretary of state also now deflecting trumps attacks, this time charging her and president obama with creating isis. Ive adopted a new years resolution. Im going to let him live in his alternative reality, and im not going to respond reporter clintons are looking to divide and conquer, campaigning in separate swing states as she faces a tight battle with vermont senator Bernie Sanders and betting on president bill clintons star power. Despite missteps while changing for his wife in 2008 later emerging at Barack Obamas explainer in chief in 2012 and i do not believe in my lifetime anybody has run for this job at a moment of great importance who was better qualified. Reporter 42nd president admits he doesnt recognize the gop of 2016. I watch the other guys debating, and i think, you know, i dont fit anymore. First of all, im a happy grandfather, and im not mad at anybody. Reporter now the former president also said on monday that he doesnt know what he would want to be called if Hillary Clinton does win the white house. He said the voting hasnt started yet, and hes superstitious. He will be campaigning here in iowa on thursday. Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton caps off a twoday swing here today. Savannah, matt, back to you. All right, Kristen Welker on the trail for us, thank you. Mark halperin is the managing editor of bloomberg politics. Request the happy new year. Does seem like a new phase in the campaign where a lot of the candidates are taking that i have gloves off, got the attack ads except not for donald trump, the frirn. Why does no one want to go after the frontrunner in the race. So far ahead that the strategy they have all adopted is im going to be the last guy standing, the only one left against trump and oneonone i can beat trump. Its a big risk but bigger risk is trying to take on trump in part because hes such an effective fighter. When you talk about strategy, mark, Donald Trumps strategy seems to be target Hillary Clinton and bill clinton. A lot of people as bill clinton hit the campaign trail wondering would he take the bait or hold his fire against trump and some of trumps comments. He didnt take the bait. Do you think its smart . He didnt take the beat and Hillary Clinton took the bail. I think clintons were surprised how quickly the discussion turned to bill clintons life with donald trump saying things on any topic that no one else will say and i dont think clintons want this january as sanders in New Hampshire and iowa, they dont want this to be about clintons past, they want it to be about the future and mr. Donald trump learned a lesson, if its a clinton trump general election that the clintons can be intimidate bid donald trump as others have been. On the republican side we still have 12 candidates. I kind of break it into two races, the conservative race going on in the republican primary and the establishment race. Who will emerge as the candidates in each of those lanes. Who is looking good and who has momentum and who are we not talking about that we should be . Donald trump has momentum. New Television Commercial we saw in Peter Alexanders piece, an aggressive events scheduled around the country and going after the clinton, in good shape, starting to spend his own money. Ted cruz who we saw also there. Ted cruz is aggressively out there. A state he can win iowa. You got to say where are you going to win . You cant be the nominee without iowa. Trump has basically the other 49. Those two guys have momentum. The other guys momentum is Chris Christie this. Thats kind of a road race for the cars that occasionally bump into each other and in demolition jersey, demolition jersey, Chris Christie, jersey guy with a big monster truck and hitting people hard and other candidates are noticing. They are coming after him. Well let you go on the monster truck analogy and hang hon because theres another big political story to talk about. President obama expected to deliver remarks this morning on the steps his administration is taking to curb gun violence. Among them, the president hopes to expand the number of gun sales subject to background checks at gun shows and flea market sellers are often able to skirt the requirement. New federal guidelines would claire fight rules that would apply to anyone in the business of selling firearms. President obama said the measures would be consistent with the Second Amendment and peoples lawful right to bear arms. All right. Mark, come on back. On one side you hear democrats saying these are bold new steps to curb gun violence. You have donald trump out there be able to get guns, but i want you to read something that a lob yifrt, Jennifer Baker with the nra had to say. She said this is it, really . This is what they have been hyping for how long now . This is the proposal they spend seven years putting together . They are not really doing anything. Two big issues here for the American Public to think about. What can a president do on his own . Hes not proposing legislation, using the kind of executive action hes used on immigration and others and a big debate the other is guns. Will this be effective . Some critics of what the president is doing is saying this is nothing, a waste of time. The nra lobbyist said that. Donald trump and others saying this is too much and even the president , the attorney general says, you know what, we dont even really know how many people this will affect. The president wants to try to do something on this issue before he leaves office. He feels this is the best he can do with republicans in control of congress. Its admittedly modest but then you can ask him the question what took him so long because he has the power with this pen for the last seven years . Effort for legislation after the horrible tragedy in new town. After what happened late last year and has tried again. This is what his administration has come up. Hes a constitutional lawyer and thinks this passes constitutional muster. It will be challenged and even he knows it wont do as much as he would like to do and many people in this country will be opposed to these limited measures. Nbc news will have live coverage of the president s remarks later this morning on many of these stations. Also this morning, the occupation of a federal wildlife refuge in oregon by armed antigovernment protesters. Its now in its fourth day, and the group is laying out new demands even as authorities look for a peaceful end to this standoff. Nbcs joe fryer is in princeton, oregon this morning for us. Joe, good morning to you. Reporter good morning, savannah. The sheriff says this community can expect to see more squad cars throughout the entire county after extra help was called in from across the state, but he did not offer any clues to do next when it comes to dealing with the occupation. The siege now entering day four. Those occupying a wildlife refuge in oregon received a strong message from the sheriff. Its time for to you leave our community. Go home to your families and end this peacefully. Reporter the armed antigovernment protesters are controlling buildings on the ground while keeping an eye on the land from a watch tower above. They call themselves citizens for constitutional freedom and over western land. Ive spoken to many ranchers and they are all feeling the same thing. They are all feeling this impression is coming down on them. Reporter they point to the case of rancheser dwight and Steven Hammond who reported to a california prison monday surrounded by family. The circumstances that were in now are just unfathomable, tragedy. Reporter father and son were federal land near their ranch in Eastern Oregon and already served time, but a judge ruled it wasnt enough so they are returning to prison. The hammonds are angry. They say they are not connected to whats happening at the wildlife refuge in oregon, an occupation that has closed schools for a week impacting much of this community. Ive grown up here all my life, and i really cant believe its happening. Reporter overnight the leader of the group here at the refuge ammon bundy sent out a tweet saying this occupation will not end until the hammonds are freed and until the federal government turns over control therefore land. Matt and savannah. All right. Joe fryer, thank you. A lot of eyes on the stock market this morning after a rough start to the year on wall street. The dow dropping 470 points at one point on monday. The government shut it down, that scared everyone, including our own investors. Chinas been having manufacturing problems for a while this. Isnt exactly shocking. Why on this particular day does it is suddenly drop . The chinese changed some rules. Its a communist country and dictatorship. Change rules like that. Again, its a dictatorship. They will buy to keep the stocks higher. Jim, how many times have you told me as january goes, so goes the year. No, im kidding, you havent said that to me, but its a very common expression when people look at the stock market. Is it true . Historically there is evidence that indeed if the will be bad, but i can tell you we can throw out all of these because if the Federal Reserve is going to raise rates it will be a bad year. If the Chinese Market really collapses it will be a bad year. We just do nothing which i think is probably what happens it wont be a bad year so lets not make one 24hour period the reason for what we do. You squirmed out of that really well. Nice job. Texts are rising in the middle east fueled by saudi with iran and the saudis execution of a popular cleric. Nbcs chief Foreign Correspondent Richard Engel has more on that. Richard, good morning. Reporter good morning, natalie. By executing that shiite cleric who was a critic of the saudi royal family, saudi arabia was sending a message, that it wont accept protests. It wont accept unrest, and it wont accept any iranian influence in the country, but it also triggered a major diplomatic backlash. Its the worst or at least the most public crisis between saudi arabia, its alice and iran in decades, and a major setback for the white house which has been pushing for unity in the fight against isis. Were urging all sides to show some restraint. And to not further inflame tensions that are on display in the region. We reiterate the need for redoubling efforts at deescalating tensions. Its falling on dev eve after saudi arabia executed the opposition shiite cleric and protesters in iran attacked the saudi embassy. Saudi arabia and allies bahrain, sudan, the uae and today kuwait have all cut or downgraded diplomatic ties with iran. Will saudi arabia and iran go to war . Unlikely, experts say, but the two nations are already backing opposing sides in the wars in yemen, and syria. Who benefits from the rising tension . Isis. Saudi arabia and iran, both middle east powerhouses, would need to cooperate to stop the war in syria and thereby stop isis. But in the middle east now there seems more will to squabble with each other than to fight against a common enemy. Washington would like nothing behind the two countries behind everyone and get all sides focused on fighting isis, but, unfortunately, natalie, thats not happening right now. Real flashpoint there in the middle east. Richard engel in istanbul. Thank you, guys youre up to date now. All right. Lets turn to a interabouting story. It is day two of our month long start today series to help you kick off the new year right and this morning were talking to all of you resolving to get fit in 2016. Jenna bush hager is here to take the journey with us. And were going to leave those executions behind, really in. Im going to try. Bub im tired. But i have two kids. Yes. You know what its like as a new mom. Seems like you never have time to get to the gym so instead of simply resolving to lose weight which i promise myself ill never do again im spending the month talking with the best and the brightest in the fitness world about how to get in shape and state motivated. When it comes to getting into shape, its often the excuses, not the pounds, that weigh us down the most. As much as i try to get to the my goal of getting there a little harder. So as a start today rookie i needed a guru and who better than a fellow mom and a fellow jenna, wolf, that is. Last january she helped selfproclaimed jim hater and carb lover jeff rossen drop 15 pounds, with some sweat and four guidelines. Drink 20 sips of water in the morning, start a food diery. Walk 10,000 steps a day and cut simple carbs after 6 00 p. M. Tips that are now in jennas new book, thinner in 30 inspired by her own quest to lose weight after becoming a mom. I looked in the mirror and it was an unrecognizable person. I was always of the mindset, ill lose all the weight in one day and get right back in shape in one day and now for the first time it wasnt going to happen in one day, it was going to take time. After the second baby i have no time so i feel like change is scary and i feel like a lot of moms probably feel that way. That way its terrifying. Its absolutely terrifying. We fail to remember that we didnt gain all this weight in a day. We cant lose all the weight in a day so she came up with the book 30 day plan, one simple change each day which i got a sample of. Show yourself. Its possible to move when you dont have time to go to the gym, whatever it is, can you do it on an airplane. Even in an elevator. Hopefully nobody enters. We eat fast. We move foot of. I want you to spend this month chewing each bite of food 20 times. Now your appetite is catching up to where your brain is and youre realizing youre full because youll save calories per meal. If i thought jenna wolfe will let me escape with some foodchewing dips i was sorely mistaken. Heres the deal. Those are the first couple of tips. Well jump ahead and change ten one of my excuses, and ive told you this. I dont have the time. Im overwhelmed. Im going back to work. I have these two kids. What do i do. Give 20 minutes, even when your baby is taking a nap. A nap. Hold that stomach nice and tight. Engage your core. This doesnt look hard but it is. Squeeze your gluts ever time up. Feels better than it looks. Looks had a little strange. Nine, nine. Why do you say nine twice . Right where momma made me. This is the jenna before and after. Got to find a way to do as much as can you with the life that you currently have, and if it means working out on the go or while youre warming a baby bottle up or doing laundry, whatever it is. If you can do three minutes at a time a couple times a day, still 1,000 times better than doing nothing. I love the slowmo workout shoots. Jenna squeeze your glutes many with us and author the thinner 30. This jenna needs to squeeze her abs hager. Its a great tip for everybody. Both of you, me, too, all had babies and then you find yourself trying to get back into shape. What was the hardest for you, jenna, because we all thought you came back and looked like you always do in. No heard. Its discipline. Combining the way you eat and move. Its not one or the other. Its one and the other. Someone says it takes nine months to put it on. Takes nine months to take it off. Pommy is four months. Trying to figure out how to be a mom which jenna gave me advice on, how to be a mom for two and still take care of myself and thats okay. She says youve got to put yourself first and thats a hard thing to do. Recently found out that some people have three babies which i cant even imagine. Two is driving us up the wall, but you have to work with what you have. Got three takeaways. Thats what you need to work with. I narrowed it all down to three good takeaways of number one is reward yourself. Make a deal with yourself. If i skip dessert three times this week or if i get to the gym four times this week or if i do 100 pushups in a day ill get a nonfoodbased reward, a ma sam, ipod that i wanted to buy, something i dont really afford. Studies show if you make a deal burst, if you reward yourself with things, youre more antito go out and do it and work out and do the things you wanted to do. Do you have another one . Yes, the second tip. Super strict planning. Open up the phone, meeting, take the kids to school, conference calls. Put workout in there. Want to hang out at 3 00, have something at 3 00. Thats when youll work out. Stick to it and youll do it. Lastly . Anything is better than nothing. Five minutes over the course of a couple of times a day like we talked about in the piece. If you dont have 60 minutes a day, better than nothing and when you get to the day when you do have a full 60 minutes youre not having to start from scratch. Do these three things a lot with Everything Else in the book and a bagel for breakfast, days over. Ill just start january 1st. And i would reward myself with a big thing of ice cream. Not the thing. Nonfoodbased. Jenna bush hager. Jenna wolf, author of thinner 30 and get more advice on today. Com and tomorrow ways to tackle revamping your mind and coming up, hoda, and her new labor of love. Might inspire you to make a change. And Kirstie Alley here with a beautiful new figure to show this is today on nbc. All right. We are back celebrating a big day for our friend hoda. The release of her third book. Third book, wow. Its called where we belong pand hoda along with coauthor jane lorenzi found order people who achieved extraordinary little voice in their heads. Hoda, good morning. Good to see you. Good morning, realizings that im wearing a similar outfit. This must be my goto dress. Exactly. What i loved about each and every story in this book is the courage people had to switch giarrusso were going to tell you a story of a couple who took a sharp turn at age 51 surprising even themselves. If you dont like how things are done, change it. Youre not a tree. You have the ability to totally transformer area in your life, and it all begins with your very own power of choice. This is a book about people who make choices. They said, you know what. Im actually going to shift everything and try to go this way, and i think because the path of least resistance is the easiest way tonight. I think these people are braver than that. So when i met the couple who adopted kids later in life, you think, wow, maybe thats something. Like they did that and they say life was like before that. This whole notion of being a father was something that i had considered but i had considered it in a negative sense, that it was just something i wasnt going to do because i didnt think i was suited for it, and so for me to be able to look over the fence at a place like haiti and consider this idea of becoming a father at 51 was a radical departure from what i thought was my normal or what i wanted. I remember walk into my very first orphanage. When i was in the midst of that orphanage and then even walking away from that orphanage there was this this this voice, this thing saying do something. Now, at the time i wasnt exactly sure what the something was, but the obvious do something was to adopt one or two or in our case three of these children. I believe that we are exactly this everything in my past, in craigs past, even in our childrens past, was shaped for where we are right now. I like living here because i have a loving family, a brother, a sister, a mom, a dad. An orphanage and a home is really different. Here you get to experience, you know, love with your family, and they are always building you up. Im thankful for a roof over my head, loving and giving family. A brother and sister, mom and i get. When you watch these people and what they have done with their lives and the risks they have taken, you realize that sometimes its highrisk, high reward, you know. Some people risk a lot, but they ended up exactly where they were meant to be. If theres a voice inside of you pay attention. And the cool thing, you guys, about everybody in this book, some are everyday people like the juntenuns and some celebrities and they all took a ring. You all want to change things and it makes you feel that way. We all think about it. Yeah. And just to actually get off your butt and do it takes, as you say, takes a lot of guts. It does. Hand a lot of people are changing jobs, and they said if youre afraid to switch jobs because you have a mortgage and all these things they said put 10 of your time and 10 of your money towards the thing you love, and little by little you might be able to head in that direction but you can put your toe in the water. What is the voice in my head saying right now. Dont drink. Take a drink mr. Thank you, hoda. Congrats on the book. Again its called where we belong. Up next, a return to where Everybody Knows her name. Were going to talk to Kirstie Alley about her personal achievement that led to a mini this is today on nbc. 8 47. Were back with emmy winning actress kirsty ally. Since her breakout role on cheers three decades ago, shes been a very familiar face on television and in the movies. Shes also waged a very public battle with her weight, a struggle she is now winning. Kirstie, good morning, happy new good morning. You know you were here exactly a year ago today. Try to come and visit you every year. Every january of every year. Let me remind you what we talked about this time last year. Im afraid. Did you make a new years resolution for 2015 . Well, i have a lot of resolutions. Any that you can share with us . Yeah. Well, id like to hook it up. What . Are there any that you can share with us . Yeah, yeah, you have it down there. Oak come on, matt. Well, well see you in a year and see how that went. I i think in 2016 im just going to say different things. You dont even remember saying, that do you . I dont. And im going why did i say that . Interesting, normally we say did you keep your new years resolution . Oh, yeah, oh, yeah. Well talk about the resolution for this year in a second. How are you feeling . I feel i feel really good. I have a lot of great things going on in my life, and and ive managed to keep the weight off and thats a good thing. I was looking back at some of the interviews weve done in the past and i always seem to ask you when youre here, you say youve kept it off now. Yeah. And then you always seem to have some kind of struggle, just like millions of americans. Thats because youre the devils advocate. Thank you. Youre welcome. So im the cause of the roller coaster. You really were the person that made me gain weight. Im just saying, you know, if you could just come along on my team and say i know youre going to keep this off forever. I know you. Theres matt i love. I have absolutely confidence that this will be permanent. I sort of feel the same way. Whats worked this time . Well, it was a combination of things. What i realized about myselfsy really need to be held accountable for things, because i have a tendency to go sort of wild. Food is one of those things where i can go sort of wild so im a spokesperson for jenny craig. Right. And when you do jenny craig everybody gets a personal consultant, everyone, and just that going in every week, hi, weighing in and having some accountability is the big secret for me. Success is such a motivator, i would imagine. Yes. One of the things ive noticed on air is youve got a great new commercial. Told you once or twice, one of my favorite sgloes sglok and theres a mini reunion. 50 pounds down thanks to jenny crowd. Last time i saw a beauty like you i was dreaming. Yeah, i was dreaming. And i love the yummy food. I dont have to count, track or wory. Speaking of counting one more. So good to see cliffy and norm back. Was it fun to do it . Oh, it was it was amazing. It was a combination of things. When the jenny craig people asked me would i do this, i said, well, yeah, id do it, but is the set going to look real and they assured me it were lock fantastic. When we walked only the set it was like a cross between the Twilight Zone and were in a time machine, you know, and to see the guys sitting there just as funny as are and im sort of the straight man in the commercial but thats okay. They get the jokes, and they should, but, i mean, it was like in fact, i thought why dont we just do this again. I hope you do it again. It would be fun. You look great. Whats your resolution now for 2016 that i can hold you to this Time Next Year . Ill tell you more what have it isnt. For some reason i lost haul this weight, lost 50 pounds and this year ive been offered three roles nude and im not kidding, three roles. Now dish didnt do nudity what i what is 28 and i wont do nudity now. I think thats sort of supposed to be a comedy bit. I was sort of nude in a hot turks i said i wasnt going to be and then you know, the pasties float off and im nude in the hot tub so i think i in 2016. Thats my goal. Note to self. Ask the resolution question higher up next time. Yeah, yeah. Kirstie, great to see you. Happy new year. Thank you. By the way, she will be back a little later on withcalitiy lee and hoda. Next an exclusive announcement from the women behind the popular net. Murderer but all right. Were back now. Its 8 54. Got an exclusive announcement from the filmmakers behind this latest bingewatching craze, the Netflix Original documentary the series follows the case of steven avery, a man released from prison in 2003 after being exonerated for a Sexual Assault and years later arrested again and convicted of murdering a 25yearold woman. Well, the women behind this documentary Laura Ricciardi and moira demos are here and have news about the avery case and so many people are on the edge of their seats and i understand you have news about one of the jurors that contacted them by murderer. Contacted by one of the jurors who sat during Steven Averys trial and told us their belief steven avery was not Proven Guilty and bleach he was framed by Law Enforcement and that he deserves a new trial and that if he receives a new trial in their opinion it should take place far away from wisconsin. This is a juror who obviously yeah. We asked this person show explain what happened. Guilty, and what they told us was that they feared for their wow. Youre going to come back and talk more about this in our next hour, but before we get to that, are you surprised at the reaction to these ten parts of this documentary . I mean, its certainly more than we could ever have dreamed of. I mean, we made this series to try to start a dialogue, and the fact that so many people are talking is just thrilling. Wow. That juror be willing to testify if this thing goes somewhere else . Have you told us that . This juror said that they have been open about what they told us and that if someone were to ask that they would admit to charges. Our crew is at the alvin s. Glenn Detention Center right now where they saw former Columbia City councilman Brian Dequincey newman walk in to be arrested. Weve just learned hes been charged with two counts of failure to pay taxes. Also expected to turn himself in this morning current Richland County councilman kelvin washington. This is a developing story were on top of. Well continue to bring you the latest onair and burrrr cold start to this tuesday with temperatures in the 20s abundant sunshine today will look pretty however, increasing clouds for wednesday, high near 50 rain returns to the forecast by thursday investigators in Orangeburg County expect more answers today this morning on todays take will smith on his new movie concussion thats caught the attention of hollywood and the nfl. Then, making a murderer that has thousands petitioning the president. And hoda shares some Inspiring Stories that might help you change your life. All that and more coming up now. Announcer from nbc news, this is todays take with al roker, natalie morales, willie geist and tamron hall live from welcome to today on a bonechilling Tuesday Morning here in new york city. The crowd is a little smaller than usual. Yeah. What are we looking at . About 11 degrees and windchill about 3 below. Brave people out there. You all deserve big hugs. Yeah. Willie is going to come out there and give you a biggal. Or we can brick them in and give them a big mug. Im not going out there. Maybe we had this coming it was so warm for so long. Now were getting hit with cold. Im willie along with natalie, al and tamron. Todays morning jam is . A coldplay song. Adventure of a lifetime. The video is spectacular. Always amazing. Super bowl performers, halftime show. Huge. Thats right. Guys, were less than four weeks to the Iowa Caucuses right now. Lets talk a little bit about what could be the next president. United states. Donald trump in a new nbc new survey monkey moll. Can i just say something. Survey monkey. Can we come up with a better name. Survey moaning, like opinion arrange tang, you know. We should find the back story. Survey moaningy. Good question. Wouldnt it be great if you went to their office and theres a bunch of chimps working everything. Right now all the employees at survey moaningy. Bananas. Thanks, al roker. Nbc news, im proud of our partnership with survey monkey. Wonderful job. A lot of money for that. Pay them in cash and bananas, fantastic. They sit there first they poll people and then they start picking bugs off each other, grooming each other. This was happens when you try to talk politics. Its a reputable real poll. Its got moaningies. Nbc news. An online poll that shows donald trump at 35 Boston Holding a 17point lead over ted cruz and 22 points over marco rubio who is in third place. Lets look at the democratic side. Hillary clinton leading bernie poll, by 17 points, 5336. Martin omalley is hanging in there. Hacking around. The rations are much closer in iowa and New Hampshire on the democratic side which is actually whats important as we start this. Now, yesterday bill clinton hit the campaign trail for the first time in earnest. Campaigning for his wife in New Hampshire, and they are up against this issue of how to handle donald trump. Yeah. Hillary clinton has not been hesitant to go after him, but it appears in the new year theres a new approach to sort of ignore the donald. The republicans will have to decide who they are going to be nominating. Im interested in your response to the donalds comment that you and president obama created isis. I have adopted a new years resolution resolution. Im going to let him live in his alternative reality, and im not so there you go. Yeah. Andrea mitchell had actually asked president clinton in that clip we showed but thought about all the comments from donald trump. Right. You could almost see the president biting his tongue and saying, you know what, well let republicans sort that out. Let them settle their fight and well meet them in the general election. The strategy is interesting because Chris Christie tried it last year, jeb bush said he would ignore donald trump and eventually they were pulled into the fray, so others have tried to their peril because people who tried to ignore donald trump ended up at the bottom end of the poll, but its interesting on that rope line with Andrea Mitchell and bill clinton, chuck todd also said that bill clinton is famous for letting loose on the rope line. Thats where you really get him to answer a question without the standard, you know, list of points that they like to hit, but the strategy is really to keep bill clinton locked in until they are ready i guess to unleash. Its amazing on the republican side, as you said, how few people are going after donald trump. Jeb bush, interviewed him earlier this morning on morning joe, he is going after donald trump. Chris christie kind of obliquely went after him yesterday in New Hampshire. None of the campaign ads. Its rubio against cruz and cruz against christie and all these others. Donald trump gets a free ride and has not had to spend a lot of money for advertising. Working for him. Because were always talking about him. Working in the National Polls, but the polls out of iowa could be an interesting night for tet cruz, especially if he brings in his father who is a minister and certainly will appeal to the evangelicals. How quickly things can change, to, in a drum beat. A lot of people talking about changes in the new year. We talked about resolutions. Many of you have now the have made diet resolutions so youll be interested in what u. S. News world report, released their annual list of the best diets. In the category the best diets overall, no surprise, Weight Watchers is always in the top, number three on the list. Just saw the new oprah Weight Watchers ad for the first time over the holidays. Number two is a tie between tlc which is cutting down on high cholesterol diet. Great job. You only eat when the channel is on. And then theres that not the case cutting high cholesterol and also the mind diet which focuses on preventing alzheimers disease, eating grain healthy foods, a lot of the mono unsat rated good fats in your diet, the dash diet, focuses on lowering high Blood Pressure by cutting back on salt, eating more vegetables, whole grains, eliminating sweets, red meat. Thats from the mayo clinic. I havent heard of any of these, not a one of them. Not heard of any of these. Because you havent been needing to diet, i suppose, right . Youve got a good thing going. Dr. Natalie azar best not to remove overall food categories. To obviously check with your doctor, whatever. Decided to test myself because im terrible with any of these cleanses or any ive tried juice clensz, tried whatever. Im horrible with that stuff and normally, theres no reason to do it and i think most people say why do it if you dont need to, but for me it was more like mind control, can i do it. Kind of like detoxification so i felt like i needed something after doing way too much drinking and eating over the holidays, a soup cleanse, super pure based out in los angeles. They will be launching nationally, but it kind of takes the juice cleanse to more of a nutritional. A couple of these look like specimens. This one is asparagus, they are delicious, made with organic ingredients ingredients. W in it that cleanses you . The whole idea youre drinking rather than its more liquids rather than solids. Okay. Its that same idea but its more filling, but the funny thing is i wrote to my friend who is doing this. Other accountage, dont like it, snowfall. Would you send this over to the lab for me. This is chicken broth with raw misto. Pineapple, basil, cucumber, go try it. Its pineapple water. Ive been punked before. Youre not getting me. Look what al drinks in the morning. Okay. What looks worse, als cleanse. Ginger, mint, and thats. And this which is a healthy pineapple basil cucumber alkaline water. Just an elaborate way to shut me up. Chug it. Its delicious. You know what, your sister sent that. Tastes like water. So nice. Youve got green stuff in your teeth. Wow. Look in the archives. Back to what youre doing. Its two day. This is all youre ingesting all day. Got a couple more soups, but its can you eat solid food. You can if youre doing a mini cleanse. The sweet potato one already. This is sort of had you hangry . Im going to give you credit, amy crh ho n. Yesterday i had three bites of chicken. Shame on you. So the good news is youll be transparent. Right. Ill just keep drinking this and ill really cleanse. This is day two. Okay. Well see what happens tomorrow. Chicken broth. You want to try, it tamron . Absolutely not. Is there a cupcake. I am from texas. Listen, the other white meat, the wheel meat, no, i cant do that. Many my cleanse is a tbone. I figured if i can stick with it, and im terrible at this. Good. Good for you. You can do it. Wait to go. Whatever. Were supporting. You go, natalie. You are doing something we could never do. Couldnt do it. Ive done a cleanse. You do clensz all the time. Probably going to do one again in a couple of weeks, by eat solid food with it. Is that a cleanse if you eat solid food . Its like a detox, rather than cleanse. Thats a detox. Thats what this whole idea is. I think its i need a restart. Oh, okay cool. Im still having mountain dew for breakfast. Meanwhile, just when you thought the matt ellen prank of last year, the prank wars were over. No, no. No, its back on, if you were wondering. On her show yesterday ellen showed a video of an interesting moment in matts interview back in november with adele when she visit visited. Take a lock. The nfl playoffs begin this weekend and a new movie is tackling a major issue within the league, concussion starring will smith tells the identified and diagnosed the longterm dangers of head injuries in football. I sat down with will and writer director Peter Landesman to talk about concussion. Concussion tells the story of a nigerian emmitt doctor who uncovers the pattern of brain damage in football players. There are men who continunu to die, families left in ruin. Will smith plays dr. Om ha lu but initially he was hesitant to take on the character who takes on the nfl. Its a very inconvenient true. Some of the greatest times ive had with my son were around him playing football, so when i goat this, you know, screenplay, it put me in conflict with myself and then i met with dr. Omalu. After sitting with bennett and hearing his story, i actually became impelled as a parent to what do they want . The nfl wants you to say you made it all up. I made it up . They are accusing you of fraud. Did you think about when you decided to take the role what you would be up against when this movie went public . Yeah. I felt very confident that there would be people who didnt want to hear it and the thing where i didnt want to hear it. What about you, peter . If you focus on the consequences of what you do you quickly become paralyzed because at the end of the day, even from its inception, this movie was never about a takedown of anything. It was for something. It was about discovery. It was about the beauty of discovery and the investigation and the truth. The league has kept everyone in the dark, and youve turned on the lights and gave their biggest boogieman a name. Do you watch the games differently now on a sunday afternoon . Im just ooh, ah, every single play. And your son played payingtime High School Football at a Powerhouse School for four years. Absolutely. Knowing what you know now growing up . Thats a very difficult question that i think his mother is much better suited to make the decision. What a copout. My kids mother will not be making that decision. Knowing now what i know to me its very simple. You know, theres no way i would ever let my child put on the pads. Will smith hes acting career seems to be going pretty well but did hint recently at future in politics. What were you talking about specifically . Shall we start getting your Campaign Running for 2020, like what year are we talking here . I was joking when when i made that comment. As an actor what happens when you take on a role, you actually begin to wear the qualities of the person, and while i was wearing dr. Omalu for this last feels, so when i hear antiamerican sentiments, im personally offended. Will smith challenges President Trump in 2020. There will be no President Trump in 2020. All right. Hes not running for office but hes starring in this movie. Its a good one called concussion. He was nominated for a golden globe for best actor in a drama, and the movie is in theaters now. Here to celebrate the release of her third book. Where we belong, journeys that show us the way. Good morning good morning to all with the title, where we belong. What does it mean . Its with finding right lane in your lane. Sometimes you hear a voice am i with the right job, with the right person, in the right place, and these are people who decided it was time to listen to that. Look, hofn in life things happen almost by accident. You live here and go to a clem because its near your house, meet a cute guy across the street that gets married, happens to be a business thats has an opening, you dont lost business but you take the job. Suddenly your whole life was just there. Did i choose this on the path of least resistance . These are people that put their and roma downey and mark burnett what, made you want to focus on them . Hes done everything, survivor, and roma is a vy faithbased person and she wanted to talk to mark with doing more faithbased productions, and she said that she led him to where he wanted to go was basically the way that she put it, but its interesting how faith became such an important part of now not only their lives but of their profession, and they have really taken hollywood by storm just with that. Youve also included people who have made purposeful decisionmaking. Tell us about that. I think often in life, again, you just sort of go youre just going with the flow hand you think you should make deliberate choices. Some people are in the wrong profession. Some people arere with the wrong person, and i think people its tough to change your path because you have a mortgage. You have debts. You have all this stuff. Kids. Kids and everything. Someone said give 10 of your time and money and put it towards thing you love. Quickly became a phenomena and has more thaha 200,000 people petitioning the white house. Well talk to the filmmakers in a moment but first more on the story. Truth is stranger than fiction. Bullet Netflix Documentary Series Making a murderer asks what is the truth . I think ive had a good life until all the trouble started. Reporter its the story of steven avery, a man who served 18 years in prison for rape until he was exonerated by dna evidence, but four years after his release he was convicted of murder there isa halback in 2005. I didnt do it. What do it . I dont know. An article about his case got Laura Ricciardi and moira demos. Really throughout the entire series it was a question of how is the american criminal Justice System functioning . Is it delivering on its promises of truth and justice, and we thought steven avery would b ban amazing window through which to look at the system. The documentary casts doubt on some of the evidence accused to convict avery in his murder trial, including the confession by averiess 16yearold inch u, codefendant boyfriend ann dassey. Who shot her in the head . He did. Why didnt you tell us that . Because i couldnt think of it. Some recompense. One of averys attorneys at his murder trial tried to show that avery was framed by local Law Enforcement. The system that allowed his conviction on this evidence was a system that did not do honor to the basic precept of proof beyond a reasonable doubt. It ended in the hands. Says the series left out significant evidence against avery that was included in the trial, saying in part that any claim avery was framed, quote, is irresponsible and inconsistent with a consideration of all the evidence presented. The filmmakers support any steps to bring justice and closure, particularly for the woman who was murdered. Our goal going in was always to start a dialogue, and im sure you know, a piece of that dialogue is peoples desire to have, you know, more information about what happened to teresa h ha lback, and if somebody find more information, i think thats a good thing. I think thats what she deserves. Laura ricciardi and moira demos produced and wrote and directed making a murderer and have news to share about the case. Thanks for joining us. In hour last hour you were speaking about a juror in the case where steven avery was convicted of murder and that juror now has had a big revelation. What can you tell us about that. The juror contacted us directly and told us that the verdicts in stevens trial were a compromise. That was the actual word that the jury used and went on to describe the jurors ultimately trading votes in the jury room and explicitly discussing if you vote guilt on this count, i will vote not guilty on this count, so that was a significant revelation. Thats a very serious charge, obviously, moira, one that could turn the case on its head. Have you been able to independently verify that say with another juror . Weve not spoken to other jurors. This juror reached out directly to us. They told us really that they were afraid that if they held out for a mistrial that it would be easy to identify which juror had done that, and they were fearful for their own safety, and what they explained to us was they believed that if there was a split verdict like this, that that would send a message they thought that steven would get a new trial. That was sort their plan. Oh. But obviously it didnt work out that way. Laura, willie and i were talking over the holidays. Suddenly you go on social media and everyone from celebrities to your neighbors are tweeting and on facebook talking about this. Did you ever anticipate that this would turn into this phenomenon as it is now . No. I mean, we never could have anticipated or even dreamed of the type of response theres been to this series. Were really thrilled about it and appreciative of everyone tuning in, you know, and taking to social media to discuss it. I mean, were really excited about the Public Discourse that its generated. There are petitions now, including one on whitehouse. Gov getting tens of thousands of people signing up. Do you think anything will change in this case based on what you all have produced . I mean, i think because there is a dialogue now and more people are talking, perhaps ght feel safer could come forward at this point. I think it will depend on new evidence being brought to light. Just lastly what, is it about these true crimes from serial to discovery i. D. What do you think hit had a nerve with people . I think people are interesteded in whether our Public Institutions are functioning properly and to the extent they are fwhoot can be done about it. Its fascinating. We watched it, and it is compelling, and the debate will continue, but well see what happens more show in the legal system now when you have the big news. Thank you both for joining us.
