down this afternoon. flights in spain and turkey also were canceled and it may get worse. geologists in iceland say that there are no signs that this latest eruption will let up any time soon. >> wow. things aren't going to be letting up any time soon. for us, though, we have got quiet conditions outside and could see severe weather. isolated, though, this time tomorrow. the umbreallas, yeah, those were popped today. folks with their sweatshirts trying to stay warm across the area. we only saw highs in the 50s across the area. 53 degrees current temperature right now with the dew point at 45 degrees. and the wind out of the southeast at 12 miles per hour. and so far for the month of may we have not had any days with thunderstorms but that is going to change with at least two days coming to us this week. the average days for thunderstorms the month of may. total of five and here we are a third of the way through. other locations now, 54 degrees. milder temperatures south. culpeper at 5. quantico at 54. winds south and southeast. southwesterly wind coming our way through the overnight period. that's going to allow temperatures to rise. take a look at the radar now. it scans the area. we have scattered showers, athlete showers, coming through the area right now. folks up 95, looking at wet weather. waldorf, la plata as well. sliding off to the east at st. mary's and calvert county. more showers to the west there around purcellville making their way into montgomery county and aspen hill looking athlete showers as well as around beltsville. more to the north. in fact, today some of the sloppiest weather was across pennsylvania. and new york state today with heavier rain, windswept rain up here. and now we are going to see all of that make its way to the north and east as a warm front pushes on by our area during the overnight period. so last couple of hours, last 24 hours, the big rain here, all part of the same system, over the nation's midsection yesterday, it is nowhere near the beast it was yesterday. a lot of the ingredients that don't producer severe weather over the plains not just happening here. but tomorrow when we break out the and get sunshine across the area we could have bit of a round of severe weather and any time after about 2:00, 3:00, up until 7:00 or 8:00 p.m. tomorrow. look at all of the reports yesterday. at least 19 reports over the last 24 hours out of oklahoma and up into kansas and even now portions of south western oklahoma under a tornado watch. tail end of this system. so we have one system that will be making its way through and second system just coming out of the rockies right now. that one arrives on the east on friday. and you were asking about hey, i want milder temperatures around here. well, today we were cool. tomorrow up to 08 degrees. look at memphis now at 82 degrees. we will get a little bit of humidity in here tomorrow as well. dew point temperatures on the rise from 45 here. probably getting into the 50s tomorrow. so little bit of heat before yet another cooldown and another rise. we are going to be riding the roller coaster. there's the -- chance for showers tomorrow. i think mainly well after about noontime tomorrow. 2:00, 3:00, isolated strong storms coming with high winds and hail and frequent lightning and can't rule out an isolated tornado that may be taking place tomorrow within a stronger system, think, at the end of week with sunshine breaking through. right now severe storms has news a slight are risk area south and west of d.c. and for -- areas down through northern and central virginia for tomorrow afternoon. our temperature for the evening in the 50s. then a mild start to the day tomorrow with a bit of patchy fog across the area. and we will break out and get sunshine in here. the temperatures rise to about 80 degrees. that means a risk for strong storms and during the afternoon and evening. and then back to just plain old rain showers on thursday. and 6:00," the virginia governor meets with the president of the university of virginia to talk about changes that could prevent crimes like the murder of a lacrosse player. vandals ransacked the coming up in sports, nationals seem to have a knack for pulling out the close games. t a 38-year-old joey galloway trying to provide a spark for the redskins. we are back with our top story for this half hour. the governor of virginia met with the president of the university of virginia in the wake of the murder of a student there. governor mcdonnell talked to the university president today about incidents that reportedly happened before the murder of yeardley love last week. >> there are questions about possible warning signs about the victim's former boyfriend, george huguely, who was s charged in the murder. also a news statement from huguely's mother this evening. julie carey has our report. we are going to redouble our efforts to find ways to protect young people. >> reporter: that was a promise from bob mcdonnell after meeting with the university of virginia's president. the question of safety at the flagship campus was shattered last week when yeardley love was found dead, brutality been. her ex-boyfriend, george huguely, is charged with her murder. internal investigation is under way on campus to learn whether university officials should or could have known about previous alleged attacks by huguely. including an earlier incident involving love. but already the uva president is sure of this. >> i would like to know if one of my students -- >> reporter: he was charged with resisting arrest and drunk in public threatened the police officer and had to be subdued with a taser. uva officials never learned of the arrest. >> foss of that kind of would have lit the system up because students who do those things and know about i find themselves under suspension immediately. >> reporter: the president asked the governor to examine whether police departments should be required to inform university administrators when a stun is arrested. the public safety adviser will study the possible bill the governor concedes already there are logistical problems. >> law enforcement agency s expressed some concern how they would do that while starting with the -- to know the person under arrest is a college student, is he telling the truth, what's our duty to verify what college to actually report it to. i think there's logistical issues. >> reporter: both men have come to one conclusion. campus culture has to change, too. students and others that observed violent and criminal behavior must come forward. governor mcdonnell says if his review showed a statutory change is needed to help the university gather information, that would have to wait until january. when the legislative session resumes. julie carey, news4, richmond. a statement from george huguely's mother to "the washington post" this evening. she says yeardley love was a sweet, wonderful young woman. the pain and her family are suffering is something no family should ever have to endure. murphy goes to say she hopes the public will understand both george's father and i love our son. we will support george in whatever way we can just as any other mother or father would do for their child. end quote. a u.s. marine from our area was killed in afghanistan. 2 is-year-old corporal curt shea. a radio operator. shea is from frederick, maryland and graduated from frederick high school back in 2007. his family said he wanted a military career since he was 3 years old. he followed in the footsteps of two uncles when he joined the marines. at his high school he was recognized for his leadership of both a future farmers of america and the wrestling team which he tloed regional championships as team captain. but his mother says his proudest achievement was being a marine. >> i encourage everybody, everywhere, to be supportive of our troops of they are out there. they believe in what they are doing. they are committed to serve their community. unfortunately, this is some of the risk that's involved. i'm very proud of our military. >> a plaque will be put up in shea's memory and a football stadium at frederick high school. it will honor his leadership on the wrestling team and with the future farmers of america. police in caroline county, virginia are looking for a robbery suggestion peck that shot and wound ad good samaritan. it happened at a truck stop off of i-95. the suspect walked into the mr. fuel gas station in caramel church saturday night. he pulled the gun on the clerk and demanded money. a 61-year-old customer from maryland entered the store and saw what was going on. he grabbed two bottles of beer from the shelf and hit the suspect in the back of the head with him. the suspect turned around and shot the customer four times. and he -- suspect ran out of the store empty-handed. the shooting victim was treated at the hospital and is back home now and is expected to recover. thieves broke into the offices of the youth football team in southeast washington over the weekend. it was ugly. the players and coaches of the soldiers found their offices destroyed. the thousands of dollars words of football equipment and electronics were stolen and randallized. team trophies were spray painted and the team's van was even trashed. coaches say that the neighborhood is trying to overcome a troubled past but there are some who don't like the change. >> stay here and stand strong. we are shoulders. fight through it. >> police are investigating the break-in but so far nobody has been arrested. the transit agency's union has made a request. the transit union wants metro to run trains at a maximum speed of 40 miles an hour. at least until the cause of last week's close call on the red line is determined. a train operator last week was forced to hit the emergency brake between the wheaton and forest glen stations in order to avoid hitting another train. the trains currently trachl up to 59 miles an hour. the union's president thinks passengers probably would not mind some delays in the interest of safety. for the hardest part after federal job could be getting the job itself. there are usually long wait times. onerous paperwork and the feeling that you have been lost in the shuffle. but top federal officials say that sprawling office of personnel management tuesday federal officials formally are inthrow deuced a simpler hiring process ordered by president obama. under the old system hiring someone took five months or longer. with as many as 40 bureaucratic steps. and 19 signatures just to get someone hired. now the government wants to cut hiring time in half. require only resumes and cover letters for most jobs and rather than long essays. and it will give managers more control over who is hired. radio commentator mike, expert on the federal work force, for several decades, says he welcomes a reform effort that says modern security requirements could hamper those reforms. >> some of this is bureaucracy. some is cumbersome and some silly. the government now more than ever has major security requirements.
