june 9th, 2010. captions paid for by nbc-universal television and good morning. welcome to "today" on a wednesday morning, i'm matt lauer. >> i'm meredith vieira. this message from bp that it could have the oil spill reduced to a trickle by next week was met with a lot of criticism. >> this morning the company is clarifying the remarks saying it will take longer for the leak to get down to a trickle. now these vivid new images now in high-resolution for the first time show just how much oil has been gushing into the gulf. bottom line is nobody really seems to know just how much is coming out of that pipe right now. we'll let the latest on this situation straight ahead. just a day after confessing to killing a young woman inside his peruvian hotel, joran van der sloot is being taken back to the crime scene to show investigators exactly what he says happened. more on that in a live report from peru. plus, is gary coleman's ex-wife selling photos of the actor taken just before and even perhaps after his death? going to talk about that with coleman's former agent who is furious about this when he joins us for an exclusive live interview. a little later on, we'll take a look at the best commercials of the year. couple of them i think you're going to find to be very funny, including that one there from our friends at old spice. let's begin with bp backing off claims it will have the oil spill in the gulf down to a relative trickle by early next week. nbc's kerry sanders is in grand isle, louisiana with details. kerry, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, meredith. it was late tuesday that bp's chief operating officer, doug suttles, told the associated press that he thought that the flow of oil would be reduced to a trickle by monday or tuesday. short time later, and now, bp is trying to clarify that statement saying reaching that level of a trickle will take more time. under pressure from congress, bp released new high-resolution video of the flow of oil from that underwater well. the images are from june 3rd, the day bp cut the pipe in order to fit a containment cap over the leak. experts now fear that the rate of gushing oil might be much higher than predicted. this as new evidence confirms large underwater plumes of oil do exist. bp has repeatedly deny there's oil hidden beneath the surface. but tuesday, scientists at the university of south florida shared data revealing vast fields of oil suspended as deep as 3,300 feet, and they say that hidden oil is on the move. some was detected 42 miles northeast from the leak site. >> this is uncharted waters. the question is do we fight is at the surface or fight it down below. all of the oil is going to have ecological consequences. the question is to what and what concentration. >> reporter: top side in pensacola, florida, those tar balls are now a daily problem. same goes for gulf shores, alabama, where there is a strong warning -- don't go swimming. >> we're the ones that are going to have to live with this for years and years and years. i don't care what bp has to spend to fix it and to make it right. >> reporter: in louisiana on grand isle, a graveyard for the sea life fishermen fear may never return. daily, wildlife agents here search for animals in trouble. this mission was turtles. sometimes they are alive, more often they're dead. like this rare kents ridley. >> kents ridleys reside only in the gulf of mexico so this oil spill definitely puts a hinder on their survivability. >> reporter: it will take weeks of lab tests to determine if oil was at fault. so far, the authorities have found 265 dead turtles. interestingly, before this spill, the leading cause of death or accidental death for turtles was getting caught up in shrimpers' nets. now it is those very shrimpers who are out skimming the surface trying to get the oil that may end up saving the turtles. meredith? >> kerry sanders, thank you ververy much. doug suttles, good morning to you. i'd like to start out by talking about those comments you made to the associated press yesterday where you said that this spill should be down to a relative trickle by monday or tuesday. bp has since clarified that and said it is going to take longer than a week. so can you tell us where you stand now? >> well, meredith, this containment system, this cap we have in place, is actually working well. in fact, it's recovered another 15,000 barrels or so in the last 4 hou 24 hours. that's 15,000 barrels not in the sea. but early next week we'll have another system which is actually using those lines we've pumped top kill through to produce oil. that will give us another 5,000 to 10,000 barrels a day of capacity. we believe that should give us the capacity to capture the great majority, vast majority of its flow. >> when you look at the video of the oil leaking from the well-taken before the containment cap was put on and compare it to live video this morning, i'm just a layperson here but it doesn't seem like there is much of a difference. so what's going to create this change? >> well, i think the challenge from looking at these videos, if you recall before we put the cap on, you didn't have this device which allowed flow to go around the outside of it. it's almost creating, if you will, a curtain or ring around this. it is very difficult to tell how much is coming around. it's always been hard. i would say with this cap on, it's more challenging because we have the vents on the top, and we also have the stuff coming around the skirt so it is very difficult. what we want to do is get that down to a very small amount. that's why we'll be adding this additional production system early next week. >> the ceo of bp, tony hayward on sunday, said he believes the cap will likely capture the vast majority of the gushing oil, so he is echoing your optimism. but scientists who have been assigned to try to figure out how much oil is gushing into the gulf have said it is impossible to claim any success without knowing the total amount of oil coming out of that well. and the fact is, you still don't know the total amount of oil coming out of that well. >> well, that's right, meredith, we don't. what we do know though is we're capturing 15,000 barrels a day that if we didn't have that cap in place, would be going into the sea. i view that as some success. it's 15,000 barrels that's not being spilled that we don't have to clean up that won't impact the shorelines or the gulf of mexico. and we'll be adding additional capacity. then i think you probably are aware, we're adding another system at the end of june, beginning of july, which should be more resistant to hurricanes, more -- be able to come in and out quicker if we do have a hurricane this year. >> again scientists say that bp is being misleading, irresponsible and stonewalling their efforts to get a firm grasp of how much oil is gushing into the oil. one said, it is account apparent bp is playing games with us, presumably under the advice of their legal team." what is your response to that? are you playing games? >> no, we're not, meredith, we're not. we're trying to fight this thing on all the fronts that we can. these videos, this feed is being watched by everyone around the world. we're making information available. we have actually members of government and industry right in there with us on every stage of everything we do. we're trying to be absolutely as transparent as we can. >> meanwhile -- then i'll let you go -- government scientists confirmed there are large plumes of oil under the surface of the gulf. on may 31st, your ceo, tony hayward, said the oil is on the surface, there aren't any plumes. is bp willing to admit that it was wrong? >> meredith, for instance, noaa came out yesterday and talked about what they're seeing with their data. we've talked about what we're seeing with ours and our data that's out there on the internet for people to look at. we haven't found any large concentrations of oil under the sea. to my knowledge, no one has. >> but he said there were no plumes under the sea, sir. these scientists are confirming that there are plumes under the sea. >> meredith, it may be down to how you define what a plume is here. but basically some people have asked, are there large concentrations of oil under the sea and those have not been found so far by us or anyone else that's measuring this. the oil that has been found is in very minute quantities. >> bp's doug suttles, thank you so much. >> thanks, meredith. >> now here's matt. now to the results of the so-called super-duper tuesday. key prime marry and runoff elections held in 12 states. nbc's kelly o'donnell's in little rock, arkansas home to one of tuesday's most closely watched races. kelly, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, matt. there were women candidates making victory speeches across the country, most of them republicans. but democrat blanche lincoln did surprise all those who predicted her defeat. national labor unions had come in here to arkansas, spent millions trying to knock her out. president bill clinton worked very hard campaigning for her and he gets a little bit of the credit this morning as blanche lincoln defied all the national trends. >> you are great, arkansas! >> reporter: forget all those anti-washington predictions. >> your message is loud and clear that washington, washington needs to work for us! >> reporter: arkansas democrats stood behind their incumbent, two-term senator blanche lincoln who survived a tough democratic runoff against lieutenant governor bill halter. lincoln will fight to keep her seat in november. in california, voters narrowed the field to succeed arnold schwarzenegger as governor. >> i think there is a mood all over the state of california that the people want reform, people want to have change. >> reporter: first-time candidate meg whitman came in with a huge lead in the polls and came out with the republican nomination. >> here's the really good news -- i don't owe anyone anything. >> reporter: the former ebay chief executive's winning bid cost a staggering $70 million of her own fortune to defeat insurance commissioner steve poizner who spent his own millions, too. >> we've just seen two republican candidates for governor stage a billionaire's demolition derby. >> reporter: whitman faces democrat jerry brown who's held just about every public office, including governor back in the 1970s. in the senate race, california republicans chose another business executive, former hewlett-packard chief carly fiorina. >> we will take our government back. we will make it listen. and we will make it work. >> reporter: voters get another big anti-incumbent test in november when fiorina takes on democrat barbara boxer who's been in the senate 18 years. now on to south carolina's race for governor where the cost was far more personal. accusations of infidelity, but no proof. republican nikki haley denied any affairs and voters chose her to advance to a runoff. >> we said no to the dark side of politics. >> reporter: in nevada, a big tea party victory in the gop senate primary. >> we need to send a message to washington, d.c. >> reporter: but democrats are actually cheering sharon angle's win, believing the tea party candidate would be an easier opponent for one of the most vulnerable democrats, senate majority leader harry reid. >> we're ready for the debate! come on, harry, let's talk about the issues! >> reporter: and sharon angle really surged in the end and her win was a surprise to many and democrats now believe that they can use that tea party status to paint her as a bit more extreme, and that may help harry reid who, for much of this year, has been trailing just about any republican he was lined up in polls. so that really sets up democrats to have a whole new conversation in the months ahead. one of those incumbents that they're talking about, barbara boxer, republicans are really setting their sights on her now, and of course, harry reid will remain one of the vulnerable names and one of the people we watch closely in the months ahead. >> kelly o'donnell in little rock for us this morning, thanks very much. chuck todd is nbc's political director and chief white house correspondent. hi, chuck, good morning. take me on a tour of the country. start in arkansas. big win for blanche lincoln in the senate race there, in the runoff. she survives despite a lot of money flowing into bill halter's coffers in the last couple of weeks. what made the difference? >> couple things made the difference here. number one, all of that money from big labor which is a national organization, a non-arkansas organization, was able to turn blanche lincoln from being the washington establishment candidate to being sort of the outsider, the non-special interest candidate. you heard it in her victory speech. it may have breathed new life into her political career, even for the fall when she said i'm not going to answer to anybody, i can't be bought by anybody. so the same anti-washington, anti-establishment fervor that we thought would hurt blanche lincoln ended up helping her, ironically. >> the bad news is she only got 51% of democrats voting for her. now she's got to go on to november and face a republican. what are her chances? >> well, her chances weren't very good. and neither were bill halter's chances, which is why, frankly, a lot of folks at the white house were going to labor, why are you just pouring $10 million down a rat hole that was -- you were never going to get back? that said, give this three weeks. there is a sense that sometimes you get momentum when you have one of these upsets. frankly, the blanche lincoln victory is an upset. she was just as surprised as everybody else was last night. >> do we learn anything in her primary that we're going to put to use later in the summer when someone like john mccain out in arizona goes up in his own primary? i mean he's facing the criticism he faced in 2000 and 2008, he's not conservative enough. what are his prospects? >> you know, his are a little bit better because he's got a flawed opponent. they're trying to do the same thing to him that you saw with arlen specter and bob bennett and with blanche lincoln that sometimes he's been in washington too long, he's sort of not answering particularly in this case to the base of the party. but he's been very aggressive at trying to define j.d. hayworth, his opponent. he was a registered lobbyist when he was outside of -- when he left congress. going to be very hard for him to suddenly become an outsider. >> in nevada, sharon angle, the tea party candidate. she wins, she now faces harry reid in november. and do the democrats have a right to be optimistic there? >> well, what they do is they're just less pessimistic. harry reid is not exactly any less vulnerable this morning than he was yesterday before the -- before sharon angle. the difference is he's got a path to win dirty. okay? nevada has something called "none of the above," an actual line on the ballot that's "none of the above." and what both sides expect this race to turn into is a heavy dose of negative ads, both candidates will be unpopular, and what harry reid needs is a lot of people, say 8%, 10% of the electorate picking, i'm holding my nose to the point of i can't vote for either of them, i'm going to vote for none of the above. sthen sudd then suddenly he can win with 46% or 47%. sharon angle is a little conservative to appeal to independents potentially. now that's the harry reid path to victory. >> when you look at nikki haley, meg whitman winning in california, do we need to look at these races individually or is helen reddy playing in the background and do we need to look at the bigger picture here? >> look, there is something going on with conservative women able to tap into the base of the party. carly ref lly fiorina doesn't q the box as well as meg whitman. another woman we'll hear about if she becomes governor of new mexico, suzanna martinez, a conservative hispanic woman. we'll see a republican woman nominated potentially for a colorado senate. so this is a chance to sort of temper -- there are some tms that would like to tell you well, the tea party is too white, it's too male. well, guess what? if a lot of conservative republican nominees are women and some of them minority women, indian-american in south carolina, hispanic in new mexico, that could sort of round off the edges on these candidates and make them a little more -- at least make independents feel as if, well, maybe they're not as stereotypical as the media or democrats are trying to say they are. >> chuck todd, always good to get your perspective. thanks so much. >> hey, stephen straussburg. that's the real winner in washington today. >> the nationals pitcher, man. all right. thanks, chuck. now let's get a check of the rest of the morning's top stories from ann, "i am woman" curry. >> thanks, "i am woman" meredith vieira. good morning, everybody. in the news, we begin with tough new sanctions expected today against iran. the u.n. security council's voting on the sanctions to punish iran for defying international demands to halt its uranium enrichment. secretary of state hillary rodham clinton calls the sanctions the most significant iran has ever faced. hostile fire this morning in southern afghanistan brought down a helicopter and military officials are saying four u.s. troops were killed. palestinian president mahmoud abbas is meeting with president obama today at the white house with israel's blockade of gaza expected to be a big topic. mexico is condemning the fatal shooting of a teenage boy who was throwing rocks this week at a border patrol agent. nbc's justice correspondent pete williams is standing by with more. >> reporter: good morning. mexican authorities are filing a formal protest. they say that shooting at someone who was throwing rocks is a disproportionate use of force. but some u.s. official say rocks can cause life-threatening injuries. the deadly encounter happened monday night under the bridge at the pa sew del nuerte border crossing in el paso. three border patrol agents were trying to stop a group of illegal immigrants who just crossed the border. one agent had a suspect down on the ground when others in the group ran a short distance away and began throwing rocks. the agent fired his gun, one them, h-15, u.s. officials say, was killed. members of the boy's family say the agent should be punished. his father says american officials are incompetent. mexican government condemned the shooting. a spokesman at its u.s. embassy says lethal force should be the last resort and not used against a group of youngsters throwing stones. mexico says 17 of its citizens have been killed by u.s. agents at the border so far this year, up from five in 2008. but the border patrol says rock throwing has become nearly epidemic at the el paso border crossing, in some cases causing serious head injuries to american agents. the agent who fired the shot is on administrative leave while the fbi investigates whether in this case the use of deadly force was justified. >> pete williams this morning, thanks. overseas markets are mostly higher this morning. cnbc's trish regan is at the new york stock exchange where ben ben bernanke is expected to be a focus today. >> hey, ann. yes, ben bernanke back on capitol hill. he'll be testifying today. you can anticipate that lawmakers are going to be asking plenty of questions as to whether or not we're headed for a double-dip recession. >>. >> good wednesday morning. i'm chuck bell. the skies are cloudy and light rain coming down as well. rain will be a part of the forecast for today. low 60s in the western suburbs where the light rain has been falling for a few hours. here's a look at live doppler. a lot of it is not reaching the ground, but showers across montgomery county, maryland and virginia. have your umbrellas >> that's your latest weather. just ahead, joran van der sloot being taken back to the hotel room where he has now confessed to killing a young woman. we are live in peru with the latest. but first, this is "today" on nbc. just ahead, lindsey lohan's court-ordered alcohol monitoring device goes off. will she be sent to jail? >> michelle kosinski, thank you very much. pat brown is a criminal profiler and the author of "the profiler." pat, good morning. you've now heard his reported confession. he will probably say that it was coerced, but the line is i didn't want to do it, the girl intruded into my private life. what does that tell but his state of mind? >> well, i never trust when a psychopath makes a "confession," because usually that means they're trapped. in this case we really see that he is. clearly the girl was murdered in his hotel room under his name and clearly he's the only one that went in and out so he knows that they're going to get him for a homicide. the question is what homicide. usually what a psychopath does is he'll confess when you've already got him cornered, you already know something, then he'll tell you the minimum of what you know and minimize what he did, he'll give you the best story to get the best deal. yes, he says he killed her, but i don't believe the circumstances in which he says he killed her. he's blaming her for looking on his computer, intruding into his life and he went crazy. well, that will get him second degree murder. he doesn't want to admit what he did which would be first degree murder. >> last time you were on was before the confession, you said you don't believe he is a serial killer but you believe he is a serial rapist. >> he took natalee holloway to the beach, he didn't take her there to have a heart to heart talk with her. this girl also went to an isolated location. any guy will tell you, yeah, i brought her back to the hotel room so they could be friends. usually guys have some intention of some sort. most guys will not rape, however. but he has already been -- obviously one girl has gone missing under his care. my guess is that was during an attempted rape where she simply said no and he wanted what he wanted. he obviously has a thing about sex. he was involved in a little bit of sex trade thing. he has disrespect for women. we see all the signs of it. >> pat, given the fact that some reports say stephany flores was found in just her underpants and shirt, but others say she was fully clothed, no evidence of sexual assault. isn't it a possibility that he simply snapped? >> i don't believe in simply snapping. i do believe he has a rage problem. that's very clear to me. he's like a domestic abuser, if the girl says no, when a guy has a wife or girlfriend and she wants to leave the relationship or finally stands up to him, he goes you can't do that, you have to do what i say, you can't leave me, then he kills her. joran i think has very short relationships. they're like three hours long. but for him he has that girl in his control. he is a psychopath, she should do what i say, she should do what i want, if she doesn't, that infuriates me. >> he's confessed to police, why hasn't he been charged? >> i think they're looking at what to charge him with exactly. his story is she made him mad. that's second degree, an unplanned homicide. but if he killed her in the commission of an attempted rape that can go up to first degree. he was trying to rob her to go to first degree. she was supposedly found half-clothed, though the question is was she clothed in her own clothes or was she wearing one of his shirts like she'd gotten ready for bed. but regardless, a girl is half-nak half half-naked in your room, it means something. i don't believe he was intending some sexual act with her. >> natalee holloway says he would like joran van der sloot to tell everybody what happened to his daughter. if in fact he did murder natalee holloway, do you think that he will ever come clean? >> no. i see no purpose in him doing that. why should he get himself into worse trouble? psychopaths don't get into worse trouble, they try to get themselves out of trouble. i think we'll have to depend on peru to put him away. he could get 35 years for first degree homicide. my guess is he's going to come out to be a short sentence, six to ten years, >>. >> good wednesday morning. i'm chuck bell. the clouds have moved in and light rain is coming in as well. have your rain gear ready to go. temperatures in the low 60s to near 70. the live picture of doppler radar shows light sprinkles to light rain through much of the area through 270 and just to the west of i-95. temperatures stay in the 70s and back in the 80s tomorrow and friday. >> don't fer get, for you can check your weather any time of the day or night on weather channel on cable or weather.com online. trouble this morning or being a fres lindsey lohan, a judge has now doubled her pay to $200,000 after the alcohol monitoring device lohan has been ordered to wear apparently went off on sunday night. nbc's lee cowan has the latest. >> reporter: it is hardly fashionable but the ankle bracelet lindsey lohan had carefully hidden at the mtv music awards still got a lot of attention. it detects alcohol. a strict no-no according to the terms of her release. but the electronic tattle tale kn apparently detected something at party sunday night. >> this could be the time the judge puts the hammer down and says, in effect, the era of "celebrity justice" is over. you have had so many chances, now it is time to do some jail time. >> reporter: lohan was ordered to wear the monitor after failing to complete several alcohol education classes in connection with her dui arrest back in 2007. >> i just want to make sure that she understands. >> reporter: she also failed to show up for a mandatory court date last month. she was partying at the cannes film festival instead, claiming that her passport had been stolen and she was stranded. the judge didn't buy it. >> she was ordered to be here. she was ordered to be here at 8:30. she's not here. there's really no valid excuse. >> reporter: lohan took to her twitter page to suggest it is all a big mistake, saying that it was physically impossible for that bracelet to go off because she says she's done nothing wrong. so maybe someone just spilled a drink, her fans suggest. well, problem with that is the makers of the monitor say the bracelet would know the difference. >> the chance that lindsey lohan's lawyer can somehow demonstrate that the device was malfunctioning, that she really wasn't drinking is pretty much sven sl between slim and none. >> reporter: lohan will tell her story next month where a judge will decide if she's guilty of violating her probation. like most excuses, most agree the judge's patience is wearing pretty thin. for "today," lee cowan, nbc news, los angeles. coming up next, perfect pitches. we'll reveal some of the best commercials of the year right after these messages. some people don't like any added sugar in their juice. that's why we make ocean spray 100% juice. it has plenty of natural goodness, but there's no added sugar. so say hello to 100% juice. and goodbye to added sugar. i thought we weren't adding any sugar. oh. okay, nobody use these cranberries over -- over here. ocean spray 100% juice -- tastes good, good for you. for only $2.50, get a western egg white muffin melt, made-to-your-order, and add a 16-oz. cup... of freshly brewed seattle's best coffee. try the new $2.50 breakfast combo at subway. ♪ stop it. hello? >> first, you're thinking about this and you're staying at home right now living with your parents to save money. don't worry about the student loans right now. i'm going to assume the rates are very low right now. focus on the credit card debt. double or triple minimum payments on your credit card debt that can help you be out of credit card debt in less than two years. the big thing i want you to focus on is this honeymoon you are about to go on. what i see so many couples do, they'll put $5,000 to $10,000 for the honeymoon on their credit card. at the same time you pay down the debt, don't go rack back up that credit card debt. i'd be setting aside in an account right now from every paycheck where you put money specifically for the honeymoon. that's a cash-based honeymoon. >> do he think about delaying the honeymoon? >> i don't want to take away their honeymoon. really look for a deal on a honeymoon. you'll go on that honeymoon, it is your only special honeymoon. you'll buy yourself a gift on that honeymoon. this is really where young couples end up in big holes. just try to stay sane as you go through the wedding process. everything from the photos to the flowers to the limousine, it's that one day. but you know what? can you go at night and work during the day? can you put a really big effort into looking for whatever scholarships are out there? there is money available. and i know these guys get as many letters as i do from people who say, i wish i had known how much these loans were going to cost me before i took them out. >> jared, good advice. good luck, pal. now we've got an e-mail from our viewer, doreen in florida. she's asking, i recently check my credit, found many things in the report that are over 20 years old. most of the companies aren't even in business anymore. many accounts show they've been closed. i purchased a new car in 2007, have always been on time with payments but my credit score hasn't gotten better. is there anything i can do about these ghost debts so my credit improves? >> hey, good morning, guys. i'm a 30-year-old single professional. my home is worth about $115,000 less than what i owe. my mortgage company won't allow me to refinance and i'll lose about $600 a month if i try to rent. i want to be moving in about a year and i'm considering walking away from my home and volume te voluntarily foreclosure. >> ideally, don't walk away from your home. it would dramatically lower your credit score, make it very difficult for you to buy a new home in the next year or two. with that being said, reality is if you go out three, four, five years from now, you can get your credit score back up and eventually will be able to buy a home again. so it is not the end of the world. but there are other options. you have another year so you can start building up extra savings o to pay for that deficit when you go to rent the property. the other thing, do a lease option to buy. the reason that's a good idea is often you can actually collect a deposit against the renter so the renter maybe ask for a year's deposit of rent that will cover the negative on that cash flow for rent that you have every month. to get a $6,000 deposit, you can use some of that money towards that. >> david, couple of good ideas you think you might be able to use? >> they're doing it in the name of being good parents. it is really easier parenting not have to discipline. it is often in reaction to their own parenting. well, that was harder for me, my parents were sort of aauthoritarian. i want a closer relationship and want to be more like friends. nobody wants to be the bad cop. what they don't realize is of course that's really disabling their children. you might never have to say "you're cut off" if you start out with a different attitude. >> some of it, laura, the reason we're spoiling our kids is wanting them to have what we didn't have growing up and wanting them to have it a little bit easier than maybe we had it? >> certainly. it is also about parents' insecurities. a lot of parents don't feel fulfilled in their own lives. so they're essentially using their children as a calling card in decorating them. so they're saying that they have a better place in life because they have a more decorated child. >> really when it comes down to it, long-term effects of spoiling our kids makes for what? >> not building the coping skills you need for life. if you can't stand delayed gratification, no frustration tolerance because you've got everything right away, if you haven't built resilience and a tool box for coping with difficult things that happened in your childhood, then you will have no toolbox later. the fact is the rest of the world will not treat you in this way. >> this generation of kids could be setting themselves up -- >> for greater unhappiness. the idea you graduate from some wonderful place and had things does not prepare are to you the world which is not going to say, well, then here's this job. here's all this unemployment. >> laura, "you're cut off" deals with that where they essentially cut off these women who have had everything handed to them on a silver platter. so what are some of the problems that they then face?
