temperatures have fallen. we're he were were in the -- were in the 40s but now colder in winchester at just 30. ocean city, still the warm spot at 40. so cooler air moving in on very brisk westerly winds. and the current wind speeds out of the west at 17 miles per hour. at last look they were gusting at over 30 miles per hour. so we're not expecting any snow showers but what we are expecting are very blustery conditions as this cod front continues to push its way to the east. there is your morning satellite radar. winter warning advisory out to the west and i'll have more on that coming up, but for the moons, a couple of inches of snow. mix of sun and clouds to start the day. right now sunshine. a few more clouds will work in during the course of the day and the wind will be blowing at times out of the west up to about 35 miles per hour with partial sunshine and a high temperature, we may have already done that, 42 degrees. yesterday we were close to 50. so cooler than yesterday. gurvir mentioned the possibility of winter weather later this week. i'll have more details on that coming up. for now, back to you at the desk. and our top story on this monday morning is a developing story out of frederick, maryland, where police are looking for a man that crashed a small single engine plane in frederick. the man crashed into a grassy area and got out and started running. authorities detained a man for questioning. it's not clear yet if he's a suspect. the plane had been stolen from a nearby hangar elsewhere on the airport property without the owner's knowledge. police are investigating the since dent. and now to new details on the christmas day scare in the sky. a man charged with trying to blow up a airline over michigan. the incident is bringing up questions about how he got past secure et and if you rules for passengers. billions of dollars have gone to aviation security since 9/11. >> lawmakers are looking into the security slip-up and stacy cohan joins us live with the very latest on the story. >> reporter: good morning. now the suspect, abduhl mutallab, is out of the hospital. he was put in the hospital due to burns due to his failed attempt to set off a device and we are told he will have a hearing today in detroit but not expected to make an appearance at that court hearing. now the 23-year-old nigerian was first alerted to authorities by his father, a prominent nigerian banker. the family did release a statement earlier today and it said, after umar farouk abduhl mutallab stoppage of communications while schooling abroad, his father reached out to security agencies. the statement goes on to say it was while we were waiting for the outcome of their investigation that we arose to the shocking news of that day. now moving from the suspect to security, there are obviously additional security measures in place at airports both here locally and around the country. we caught up with several passengers, including senator joseph lieberman who serves as the chairman of the senate committee on homeland security and government affairs. >> our homeland security security committee will hold a hearing in january on two questions that come off of this came. the first is why are we not using whole body imaging scanners more? these are different than the magnetometers that we go through that look at an outline of your body and can pick up any -- anything you have on you that you shouldn't have, particularly hidden stuff like the explosives. there have been privacy concerns raised about the scanners but those are minimal, particularly when compared with the devastation that can occur if a terrorist puts explosives, as this man did, on his body and they blow up. >> reporter: the senator cautions those who were quick to blame the obama administration for the breach. he says the measures in place were in place long before president obama took office. the senator was then whisked away to his flight as he and those traveling with him anticipated long lines at security here at reagan national. now we have seen a moderate backup but that may be due in part to holiday travel and not just a security measures. we've heard mixed reviews from passengers from other destinations as to what they had to face but one man said coming in from detroit he was patted down by airport officials and that was the first time that had happened for this frequent traveler. live at reagan national, i'm stacy cohan, back to you. and we want to run down what we know about the explosive materials that mutallab is accused of using. it's called petn and it's very volatile and used in military explosives. it is a popular choice with terrorists because it's small and powerful. it's the same chemical that the shoe bomber, richard reed, used in his attempt to blow up an american airlines flight from paris to miami in 2001. another security scare on board that same flight yesterday from amsterdam to detroit. a passenger got up to go to the restaurant several times and refused to come out as the plane prepared to land. once the plane did land, armed officers rushed on board to remove him. authorities now say the passenger wasn't a threat and reportedly had a case of food poisoning. now here in our area, everything is back to normal at reagan national following a water main break over the weekend there. it knocked out partial hower saturday and flooded terminal c where u.s. airways operated out of. there was a major shift in baggage claim and canceled flights. a spokesperson for the airport said it took people all night saturday to clean up the mess. and a boil water advisory remains in affect for parts of prince george's county. take a look at the map. this is the area that is ffected. a water main break is forcing washington suburban sanitary crews to test the water to make sure it's safe. it's just a precaution but residents are being asked to boil any water for cooking, drinking, washing their hands or brushing their teeth. and now to some of the other big stories we're following this morning. the hunt is on for a driver involved in a deadly hit-and- run. it happened around 1:00 this morning at 16th and park road in forth west. so far police haven't released any details about the victim or the car they're looking for. if you have any information, d.c. police would like you to give them a call. and police in fairfax county are investigating a deadly accident. the single car crash happened before 2:30 this morning at west ox road and lehigh way. both people in the car died. so far no word on a cause. the man accused of kidnapping an 11-year-old maryland girl is expected to be in court today. police say thomas leggs abducted the girl and her body was found on christmas day after a massive search. anonymous donors paid for her funeral and burial. leggs is a registered sex offender. now to overseas. iran is stepping up a crackdown on opposition protestors. at least 7 prom innocent activist -- prominent affect visits were a -- affect visits. hundreds more were warned. they doesn't expect them to come down so harshly due to the holiday. a fire that displayed 25 families oar the -- over the weekend and what caused the flames in oxon hill. and another loss for the redskins. and this one particularly painful. what went wrong. dave ross joins us with mnday morning now know what caused a fire at an apartment building in prince george's county. officials say an unattended candle started the fire that burned down a three story apartment building. it took firefighters nearly two hours to bring the three-alarm fire under control. nobody was hurt but two dozen families were disaced. doctors have discovered a resistant form of tuberculosis here in the u.s. s is so rare only a handful of people are believed to have it. they believe the over use of antibiotics for the over use of the strain. there is only one drug affective against malaria but the disease is mutating to resist it. police have questioned jon gosselin's girlfriend for the ran socking of his new york apartment and left a note pinned to his dresser saying cheater. no charges have falling back to 36 at reagan national and temperatures are at or below freezing to the north and west. gaithersburg is 32-degree. and so cold conditions out there. and in martinsberg, just 30 right now. and colder air moving in and this is only half of the story as the winds continue to roar at times. very blustery afternoon out of the west and northwest, gusting in excess of about 30 miles per hour. these are sustained winds. 21 at reagan national. 20 in baltimore. and 12 down at patuxent naval air station. and we've had a cold front move through. the first in a series of cold fronts tht will lower these temperatures over the next 24 hours. there is your satellite radar. a mix of sun and clouds. we have sunshine out there right now. you can see the clear skies over the washington area. if you're headed out to the west, maryland and west virginia, we have a winter weather advisory. a couple of inches of snow expects in frostberg an western maryland. but other than that, a quiet couple of days around here. but with a secondary reinforcing shot of cold air moving in later tonight, we'll bottom out with our temperatures tonight falling back into the low to mid-20s in washington and teens off to the north and west. so be ready for cold weather. partly sunny out there. windy at times. high temperature of 42 degrees. look out for the winds gusting to 30 miles per hour out of the west, 10-15 miles per hour. tonight cold, winds stick around, 15-20 miles per hour and overnight temperature is 24. take a look at five-day forecast. next couple days very brisk. tomorrow's daytime high only 36 and the winds will stick around all day tomorrow. wednesday's high of 37. we cloud up late on wednesday. we could have a period of rain, snow and or sleet during the day on thursday. timing will be very, very critical here. the temperature will be critical. and the event track of the storm we'll watch carefully but it's possible we could have some wintry weather around to achieve your skin here. >> now we're vegetarians and so i tend to lean toward recommending that as a diet. but, even if you are eating meats, there are some things that you can do. and so i wore my cowboy hat today because we're giving a round-up of products. and these are the things that i kid you not, i take every day. >> you eat this every day? in some form? how so? how do you get all of those blueberries. >> that's the perfect question. people say how am i going to eat a cup of that. you blend it down into a smoothy. but our smoothies are way too sweet and we need to mix whole fruits. so for example, when using strawberries urk should leave the tops on. >> why? >> because the strawberry leaf is where the medicine is. when we drink teas, they are the leaf of whatever plant or flower. and when we removthe leaf, we're limiting the urinary tract to keep clean. >> but the berry is fabulous. don't just throw aware the berry and eat the stem. and that's why we'll use the entire berry. >> what do the berries do? is it the skin? is it what makes your hair shiny? >> on the internal part we're talking about the urinary tract with the stem. and the seeds, any time you eat the skin of fruit, it goes to your skin. so seeds to your skin. so we're using things with high antioxidants which help skin not wrinkle and help us remain healthy. so instead of just eating things that we're typically eating we're going to make sure we have a rainbow of colors. >> and this is easy to do. you have fresh fruits based with what kind of juice? what do you have in there? >> i have palm granite and that will assist with the skin. many of the creams for pain and joints and for wrinkles are made out of palm granite. >> do you like berries? >> yes. >> and most kids don't. how do you introduce them? >> i think the number one thing is to take them shopping with you. because when they're involved in the process, it's great. and when you bri something home, it's like what is that litter mates. >> these 11 years old. they've been together their entire life and they are at the alexandria animal welfare league and they're looking for a home. we're trying to get them a home together because they've been together they're whole life. at 11 years old it's very difficult to separate them. >> they're both jack russells. >> and they're in good health, especially for being 11 years old. they're very good with the energy level. and they're just extraordinarily sweet. i'm been very impressed with them. >> i have too. because i have a lot of friends that have jack russells and they get that reputation of being hyperactive and barking a lot. but these gals have been just darling. >> they're very, very sweet little girls. and at 11 tear probably calmer than they would have been at one or two years old. and again, they're in really good health so that's something that is really important in an older dog, to know. these guys have been evaluated by veterinarians and they're doing well. and what we're try to do is get them a home together and probably if a home with older children. just because they've never been arnd kids before so i don't know how they would do with little kids. >> would they do okay if you don't have big yard. >> absolutely. they're very good o leash. i walked with them this morning. and they're extremely affectionate. i think little bit is nervous but trouble is ready for her television debut. >> and we have the lights and cameras here and i think sometimes dogs don't behave like this when they're out of this environment. >> she's a superstar. >> we want to get them a home together, that would be the way to go. >> and with older dogs, sometimes they do have health issuesch but if you just maintain and get regular checkups, they're okay. >> keep their weight down and both of these girls are in good shape and the thinner dogs will live longer. and they both look good. i just can't tell you how impressed i am. i have a 13 and a half-year-old jack russell and he doesn't look as good as they do and these girls are 10 times nicer than mine. >> dr. nelson, thank you. let's hope that somebody else gets these dorrous little and now we'll show you how to prepare a dish on new year's eve and you can see the chefs working hard to prepare for the lunch rush. but we're talking about new year's eve and some ideas that you can put together in your own kitchen. joining me now is tony, the executive chef here at the oval room. we're talking scallops. >> we. we have main scallops as a raw for new year's eve. can you do this as a hors d'ouvre. we get our scallops from maine the day before we need them. you want to use something ultra fresh. these are sea scallops. we're going to just cut them up, so they're small. and season them with two oils. a little olive oil first. >> and tony, how you can spot a good scallop. i see them at the store and they're really large. how can you tell they're are great. they're from maine but how you can pick out a good looking scallop. >> these are dry and there is no white milky liquid exerting from them. >> does that mean they won't be gritty. >> yes. and a fresh scallop will stick to your knife. so we have two oils in here. we added some sherry vinegar. >> and you dice them. >> this way they are better. with sea salt and chopped chive. >> pretty easy to make at home. a light dish. >> very easy. >> what would you serve this with? >> as far as? >> a wine or drink. >> i would do probabl something white. maybe some champagne if you like. >> and i know you're taking reservations for new year's eve. what goes on here? >> we do an ala cart first seating and after that we do -- this year we're going a five court tasting menu. three or different choices per coursech and we're adding fried shallot or crouton, cooked in olive oil and butter. and the best pa of this will be a little shaving of white truffle from italy. >> pretty easy to make. >> pretty easy. >> where is the best place to get scallops here in the d.c. area. can you get them at grocery store? >> the best seafood i've seen here in store if you want to go to grocery store is whole foods or baldaccis. >> and biggest seller of all time. and there are great films playing in the theaters right now. one of the top movies at the box office is called its complicated. all-star cast includes meryl streep and al eck baldwin but there are new actors. hunter parish, joey cavin and caitlin fitzgerald join us live from new york to talk about the film. good morning to all three of you. >> good morning. >> so how do you all fit into this. it's a love triangle in a sense. but you guys aren't involved in the love triangle. can you explain your characters? >> i hope not. it's more of a -- our parents, who have been divorced for like the last ten years and in the film and it's about sort of meryl streeps character who is an older woman in her mid life and love at that time and then she meets up with her ex- husband. >> played by alec baldwin. >> and things take offment but then she has steve martin on the side over here. >> making things complicated. >> and we are their children, alec and merrill's kids who have been the victims of the divorce and have more strong emotional feelings about what they're doing. >> now it's starting to make sense to me here. it is a bit of a triangle. >> it's complicated. >> how perfect that is. what was it like to weekend with these a -- like to work with these amazing actors. what was it like? >> we kind of got the best of them. because they're playing our parents and they both have children. they were very parental towards us food once when we were hungry and merrill would make us laugh. so in a weird way, i feel like we got treated to the most perfect experience. >> we really did. >> and it is one of my first films and i made a lot of rookie mistakes early on and it was such a great, warm group of people to work with and they're very supportive. >> except for this one. >> except for him. >> i'm just a mess. >> i see. well did they give you any kind of -- you said they treated you like their children. did they have any acting advice for you? i would love to hear what they say for up and coming actors? >> i think we had a lot of opportunity to just watch and learn. >> that was the biggest lesson. >> absolutely. and being able to just be in company with them and just confusing in them on a personal level was -- acting our work as well and things to say. but yeah, just -- like zoey was saying, even alec said at one point, if we really had kids, these would be them and just sort of helped us do some good stuff altogether. >> we were a unit very quickly. >> well the three of you, thank you so much and good luck.
