was a mountain lion or bobcat or something. >> reporter: it was a pair of great-horned owls like these, birds that typically eat rats and squirrels but on this recent night, had a bigger appetite. from out of the darkness, they swooped down and attacked band it and trooper here after a brief struggle, band it escaped, bloody and limping but trooper was carried off and hasn't been seen since. owl experts say such attacks are rare and almost always lethal. razor sharpitalons can easily snatch a pooch like piccolo here. >> it's a hungry time of year for them and as we encroach on their natural habitat, it could be more problematic. >> reporter: right now, baby owls are hatching so pet owners should keep an ear out for the distinctive hoots of the fiercely defensive birds and stay clear and it's a good idea to keep small pets indoors when the sun is down. >> if they recognize something as prey, they're not going to discern the fact that it's somebody's pet, unfortunately. >> it has. the winds aren't bad in the course of the evening. earlier and yesterday, the winds were on the stronger side and had winds picking up a bit and with the snowpack melting as well, causing some problems for people out there and let's look outside and see how things are. we have some dry spots here and there. some of you are not seeing much of anything and of you some -- some of you drizzle and light rain ansome of you pockets of heavier rainfall. we have variance in terms of what is going on out there across the skies. we're going to show you the true picture. plenty of moisture with the system and it's widespread and you can see the northeast getting hammered here and through to the south across the d.c. metropolitan area, maryland and virginia and to the south, there is plenty of precipitation and to the west and this has real live spin going and a couple of systems here that are causing all of this and we're not out of the clear and now, we had a few breaks earlier in some of the areas. to the south of us, we had plenty of rainfall moving through in the course of overnight and into tomorrow. the heaviest looks like from the i-95 and highway 29 and from charlottesville and culpeper. else where you will see moderate or light rainfall and we're looking at fog as well. the visibility is reduce and the roads are tricky. flood watches, coastal flood warnings all in effect and this is the area in green. that is in effect through sunday night and we have a coastal flood warning in effect for areas close to the potomac or maryland chesapeake area and do be careful out there. it can be dangerous and flood watches and warnings in effect and also, we're talking about the rain and fog in the overnight hours and the early part of the week. there is sunshine in me forecast and that is some good news for you. we expect to see more by the morning hours and over two inches for baltimore. half an inch as far as is concerned and martinsburg got three quarters of an inch of rainfall and areas to the north and east surely getting more now and because it's heavier there. temperatures close to seasonal and overall temperatures into the eastern seaboard and that is where they're gegetting hammered and winds report bad and they were stronger earlier. as the system pulls out behind it, we're still talking lingering showers and monday looks like we're going to be effected into the early part of the day and be prepared for. that we're talking about 3 in the morning on sunday and we're still dealing with the precipitation as we go through into the early hours of the morning and still lingering through and plenty of it to areas of the west and on sunday night, more of a break and we have a few lingering showers or two across the area and for tonight, still some rain in the overnight hours and some light and moderate, could get a break or two here and there and don't be too anxious when you see it and there is going to be rain coming through. don't forget to turn the clock ahead an hour. i n't want to be late. i know i have to be back here and set my clock ahead an hour for sure and sunshine returns. looking good and temperatures to 60 degrees
