Experts suggest extending Level 3 COVID-19 alert: CECC head 05/24/2021 05:36 PM CNA file photo Taipei, May 24 (CNA) Local experts have suggested that Taiwan s Level 3 COVID-19 alert be extended rather than allowed to expire Friday given that domestic transmission of the disease remains severe, Health Minister Chen Shih-chung (陳時中) said Monday. The Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC), however, has not made a final decision on the issue, said Chen, who also heads the CECC. The Level 3 alert was originally announced on May 19 and set to last until May 28. Chen commented on the issue after Keelung Mayor Lin Yu-chang (林右昌) publicly called on the CECC to maintain the Level 3 alert across Taiwan for another two weeks after the initial May 28 expiry date.

Taiwan slams WHO s indifference after failing to get into

TAIPEI, May 24 (Reuters) - Taiwan s government slammed the World Health Organization s (WHO) indifference to the health rights of Taiwanese people and for capitulating to China on Monday after failing to get invited to a meeting of its decision making body. Taiwan is excluded from most global organisations such as the WHO because of the objections of China, which considers the island one of its provinces not a country. Taiwan, with the strong backing of major Western powers, had been lobbying for access to the WHO s World Health Assembly, which opens on Monday, as an observer. In a joint statement by Foreign Minister Joseph Wu and Health Minister Chen Shih-chung, Taiwan s government said that they would continue to seek participation.

The man had visited Wanhua District in Taipei, the epicenter of the recent surge in domestically transmitted coronavirus cases, CECC commander and Health Minister Chen Shih-chung (陳時中) said at a press briefing. The CECC had not yet found any medical treatment records involving the man, who died on May 22 and the death led to the health authorities to conduct a COVID-19 test, which came back positive on May 23, Chen said.
