Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 16 : Shocked by the setback in the recent local body elections, the state Congress is in firefighting mode and is planning to plug all the loopholes before the Assembly polls in 2021.
Congress president Sonia Gandhi has summoned Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee chief Mullappally Ramachandran, former Chief Minister Oomen Chandy and Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala to Delhi for a meeting on Monday.
Chennithala was the chief ministerial candidate of the party even though there was no official announcement. Thiruvananthapuram: The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), a constituent of opposition United Democratic Front (UDF), is eyeing to contest five more seats in the 2021 Assembly elections, party sources said on Wednesday.
The IUML is likely to demand more seats as Kerala Congress-Mani has left UDF and joined ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) and several of its leaders are also poised to jump into the Assembly electoral arena or even change constituencies they wish to fight from.

The CPI(M) district committee has asked the BJP State leadership to explain its stance in the wake of the BJP councillors in the Kochi Corporation voting for councillors of the Indian Union Muslim League, Independent backed by the Welfare Party and other UDF constituents in the elections to the standing committees. The unholy nexus between the BJP and these parties had come out in the open, according to the CPI(M).
District secretary C.N. Mohanan said that the Congress had shed its secular and democratic nature. By joining hands with the BJP and the Welfare Party on a day when the KPCC president had spoken against such understandings showed that the Congress would do anything to clinch power, he alleged.

In the elections to the Kochi Corporation’s eight standing committees on Tuesday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) councillors’ surprise move to vote for UDF-backed councillors in the polls to seats reserved for women gave the UDF a majority in one committee, while the LDF won majority in four others.
