The Supreme Court has advanced its summer vacation in view of a sudden spike in COVID-19 cases across India.
According to the revised schedule, the vacation will start on May 10, 2021, and the Court will reopen on June 28, 2021, a circular issued by the court announced.
Earlier, the vacation was scheduled to commence on May 14 and end on June 30.
The circular said November 13 will be a working day for the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court Bar Association had requested Chief Justice of India NV Ramana to advance the summer vacation of the Supreme Court in view of the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic.
NEW DELHI: Taking note of a surge in Covid-19 cases, Chief Justice of India (CJI) N V Ramana advanced Supreme Court s summer vacation on Saturday to May 10, instead of May 14, after the full bench of the court concurred with the proposal.
On April 26, the CJI had taken note of the representations made by bar bodies such as the SCBA and the SCAORA seeking advancement of the summer vacation in view of the sudden surge in Covid-19 cases and decided to put them before the full bench for consideration. It is hereby circulated for information.upon consideration of the suggestions from the bar due to the surge in COVID-19 infections, the Chief Justice of India has been pleased to direct that the summer vacation of the Supreme Court calendar 2021 be rescheduled to commence on Monday, May 10. Court shall reopen after the summer vacation on June 27, a circular issued by the apex court said.

Sorabjee had been honoured with Padma Vibhushan in 2002 for his defence of the freedom of expression and the protection of human rights.

NEW DELHI: Former Attorney General (AG), Padma awardee and one of the topmost lawyers in the country, Soli J Sorabjee passed away on Friday at the age of 91, due to COVID-19. Soli and his wife had tested COVID-19 positive, some days back. His wife is in the process of recovering from the disease. However, Soli, unfortunately, succumbed to the disease.

New Delhi [India], April 30 (ANI): President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday condoled the demise of Former Attorney General (AG), Padma awardee and one of the topmost lawyers in the country, Soli J Sorabjee who passed away at the age of 91 due to COVID-19.
Stating that the country lost an icon of the legal system in Sorabjee, President Kovind said that he was among the selected few who deeply influenced the evolution of constitutional law and justice system.

The disease has claimed the lives of many senior advocates such as Anip Sachtey and V Shekhar recently. Many junior advocates are either in-home quarantine or in hospital. Though the Supreme Court Bar Association had begun vaccinating lawyers, the process is far from complete given the sheer numbers. The vaccination programme which was discontinued in between has been restarted within the court complex.
