The Edmonds School District is among those asking the Washington State Superior Court in Douglas County for permission to join Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson in defending $500 million per year in education funding that would be raised from a capital gains tax approved this year by the Washington State Legislature.
A group that includes the district earlier this week filed a motion to intervene as defendants in the cases of Clayton v. Washington and Quinn v. Washington. Both lawsuits are trying to eliminate $500 million per year in education funding raised from a capital gains tax.

Why is the Edmonds School District asking for a 2021 Capital Levy on the April 27 ballot?
It comes down to this: We need to preserve our school buildings, so they are safe and functional for our students and staff. This includes making sure we update our safety, security and accessibility systems. As our enrollment continues to grow, we also need to keep up with that demand. This levy will allow us to add additional classroom space for students. Some of our schools are beyond repair and just need to be replaced.
“We are asking our community to consider this levy, which takes care of our highest and most urgent capital needs,” said Dr. Gustavo Balderas, Edmonds School District Superintendent.

In a letter to families Thursday, Edmonds School District Superintendent Dr. Gustavo Balderas addressed Wednesday’s day of unrest at the U.S. Capitol, stressing the role of education in a strong democracy:
Dear Edmonds School District families,
We have encountered so many unprecedented challenges over the past year, and now we add yet another. With that said, I want to share my thoughts on the violent actions that took place in the U.S. Capitol yesterday.
It is an extremely concerning time when our own government and democratic process is halted and our elected representatives are evacuated for their safety.
