Rhinelander Area Food Pantry Cancels Food Distribution Monday Afternoon

Credit Katie Thoresen/WXPR The Rhinelander Area Food Pantry won’t be able to do its normal food distribution Monday from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. The pantry said it’s having water issues that is preventing the distribution. There will be another Farmers to Families Food Box Distribution this Thursday, April 29th. They hope to start at 8:30 a.m. but it depends on when the truck arrives. It’s open to the public. Boxes are free and do not require registration. The RAFP started new hours last week. It will be open for distribution Mondays from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. (except tonight due to plumbing issues), Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Produce Union Unhappy with USDA s Cancellation of Food Box Program

(NAFB) – A trade group in the fruit and vegetable industry is unhappy with the USDA’s decision to cancel the Farmers to Families Food Box Distribution Program. United Fresh says millions of Americans gained access to healthy, fresh produce throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, calling the decision by Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack “shortsighted.” The group says comments disparaging the program were a slap in the face to the thousands of volunteers, non-profits, regional food distributors, and farmers who worked together in communities across the country to deliver healthy foods to people in their time of great need. “For a major new program put together rapidly in a time of crisis, the food box program certainly included challenges,” United Fresh says in a news release. “Yet, hundreds of community non-profits and nutrition advocates have found delivering fresh produce directly to those in need has great potential to truly make a difference in the health of millions of Americans

The donations from the USDA Farmer to Families Food Box Distribution will begin Saturday at the Texas National Guard Armory Building, 9314 Jack Finney Boulevard in Greenville. Bertram Cooper with Community Seeds says the giveaways will be at the Armory each Saturday in March and is asking for additional volunteers to meet what he expects to be an increased demand. “Everyone must wear a mask, please bring gloves, you must show up on time and you need to have your temperature checked,” Cooper said.
