Publications Never lose a debate with a global warming alarmist! May 5, 2021 In this Research & Commentary, Samantha Fillmore examines a House Bill in Rhode Island that would raise the minimum wage. Like most state legislatures, Rhode Island has spent substantial time in 2021 focused on economic concerns after a tumultuous 2020. Lawmakers in the Ocean State are spending a significant portion of their legislative session analyzing the state’s economic condition after an unforeseen plunge in tax revenue due to the coronavirus pandemic. In addition to the financial hardships of the state, elected officials are also grappling with the financial struggles of their constituents. Due to this, lawmakers in the Rhode Island House of Representatives are considering two pieces of legislation that would increase the state’s minimum wage. More specifically, House Bill 5130 and House Bill 5939 propose raising the state’s minimum wage from $11.50 per hour to $15 per hour by 2024.

Following the financial roller coaster that was 2020, many state legislatures are beginning sessions reeling from budget deficits due to lost tax revenue because of the coronavirus-related recession. Because of the perilous economic situation, many states are considering quick fixes to address their budget problems, even though these so-called quick fixes would likely make matters worse over the long term. Maine lawmakers recently proposed a bill that would hike the state’s minimum wage. More specifically, House Bill 1279 proposes raising the state’s minimum wage from $7.50 per hour to $16 per hour, by January 1, 2025.
