BATON ROUGE – A resolution approved Monday at the State Capitol asks Congress to funnel money from proposed federal infrastructure legislation for construction of a Mississippi River bridge to begin by 2029.
Members of the multi-parish Capitol Area Road and Bridge District request Gov. John Bel Edwards and state lawmakers appropriate and direct the allocation of the funds for the planning, specifications and full funding to bring to fruition the long-desired plans for a bridge that would connect La. 1 along the Iberville and West Baton Rouge parishes with La. 30 along the St. Gabriel/Baton Rouge corridor.
The proposed project carries an estimated $1 billion price tag.
Louisiana’s secretary of state has pulled the plug on a request-for-proposal (RFP) process to choose a new voting machine vendor and upgrade the state’s aging elections technology, citing misinformation that has hurt voter confidence in the system.
Louisiana Speaker of the House Clay Schexnayder was the guest speaker at the Livingston Parish Republican Womenâs Club meeting on Dec. 2 at Big Mikeâs in Denham Springs.
Schexnayder represents District 81, which includes Livingston, Ascension, St. James and St. John the Baptist parishes. He has ties to all of the parishes he represents but he grew up in Livingston. He is the first representative from Livingston Parish to hold the position of speaker of the house.
Schexnayder said that even though 2020 was a stressful year, the Legislature was able to pass meaningful bills, including tort reform; economic development bills; drafting a budget that gave priority to items such as road improvement; and initiatives to help get children back in school after the hurricanes. He felt the greatest achievement of the year was in working hand in hand with the Senate and collaborating to reach these goals.
