Education officials in the Halifax area are downplaying concerns by the teachers' union that staffing plans for September amount to cuts, reassuring educators there will be no change to services for students.

Over the last few days, there have been reports about school staffing for next September that are not accurate and I want to correct the record:
no teacher is losing their job; in fact, there will be at least 70 new teachers hired
across the province, more than 260 new school staff – psychologists, education assistants, guidance counsellors, autism support staff and more – are being hired to support students in the classroom
overall, the provincial education budget will rise by $112 million, including $15 million more for inclusive education
Parents say kids who need one-on-one support being left behind in online learning
Nova Scotia Premier Iain Rankin said last week he s heard from the minister and deputy minister of education that remote learning is going well, but some parents of students who require additional supports at school say their children are falling between the cracks.

N.S. reports 96 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, Rankin and Strang to hold briefing
A spike in COVID-19 cases in Nova Scotia coincides with record numbers of people being tested in recent days. Premier Iain Rankin and Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Robert Strang will hold a briefing at 3:30 p.m.

Nova Scotia is reporting 96 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, the highest number yet reported in the province.

In addition to the school closures in the Halifax area, one school in Truro has closed, as well as three in the Sydney area. Those schools are closed until later this week for deep cleaning and contract tracing.
Premier Iain Rankin said no students in Cape Breton have tested positive, and there s no evidence of community spread. But I want to assure all parents and teachers and staff and students that we are watching this very carefully. We ve added testing sites in the community, and we encourage everyone to get tested, including students, he said during Monday s briefing.
