LELAND Eugene Hayes Jones graduated to heaven surrounded by his family Sunday, March 14, 2021. After kicking stage IV lung cancer into remission, he began another battle for his life when he tested positive on Jan. 28 for COVID-19. A long, valiant battle ensued, but a body can only take so much, and his dream of meeting his Creator and his Savior became a reality late Sunday afternoon.
He leaves behind his beautiful loving bride of 60 years Rose Mary Jones; three devoted children, Gary Gene Jones (Donna) of Wilmington, Dina Jones Harper (Les) of Kinston and Crystal Jones Heavner (Jeff) of Holden Beach; adoring grandchildren, Felicia Jones, John Harper, Hunter Reaves (Taylor), Daniel Jones and Josie Harper; faithful sister, Glenda Futral (Johnny); and dear sister-in-law, Cathy Jones. Eugene also leaves behind many special nieces, nephews and many friends he met throughout his life to cherish his memory. Eugene was preceded in death by his parents, Alton James Jo

BURGAW, N.C. (WECT) - Mt. Calvary Center for Leadership Development, a leading nonprofit in Southeastern North Carolina, hosted a vaccination event at its Burgaw location today. This was done in collaboration and support from New Hanover Regional Medical Center. NC-Representative Carson Smith expressed his gratitude for Mt. Calvary hosting this event to help people receive vaccines.
SOUTHEASTERN NC Vaccinations continue moving at a steady pace in the state. More than 3 million total shots have been given, and the state’s positivity rate has now fallen below the 5% mark, tracking at 3.7%.
Gov. Cooper announced he will open the vaccination queue on Wednesday, March 17, to people with high-risk health conditions and those who live in congregate settings in Group 4.
The rest of Group 4 frontline essential workers will open on April 7.
As well, more vaccine providers have opened in North Carolina, including CVS pharmacies.
