can expect, especially about that new evidence. >> reporter: yeah, that's right. we are really at the culmination of 2 1/2 years of criminal investigation by fulton county district attorney fani willis, and we know there are witnesses who have already gone before this grand jury today that is hearing the case against former dont donald trump and his allies and their efforts to overturn the 2020 election. we saw a former state democratic senator, jen jordan. she just departed the courthouse. we previously confirmed that she was here to testify in this trump case. we also got a statement from former democratic state representative bee nguyen who confirmed she too was here to testify in the trump case. both of these women were witnesses to these conspiracy-laden presentations that rudy giuliani and other members of trump's post-election legal team gave before georgia state lawmakers in december of 2020. again, we're waiting to see when
will be testifying before the fulton county grand jury. trump goes on to say he shouldn't and then he goes onto launch a number of other attacks against duncan. again, this grand jury presentation is expected to take up to two days. of course we're going to be on high alert for any potential indictment announcements today or tomorrow. and this is a sprawling case. this has been a 2 1/2 year investigation that was set off when donald trump made that phone call to brad raffensperger and pressed him to find the votes for trump to win the state of georgia. it's gone onto include the fake elector scheme, an harassment campaign against election workers as well as a voting systems breach in georgia, sarah. >> all right. thank you for all of that. i appreciate it. john? >> just a reminder, these were the election results in georgia in 2020. this was the margin between the two candidates, joe biden won by 11,779 votes.
to which room to appear before which judge at which time. as your team has been watching this, do you have a sense of where things stand? >> yeah, we have a fairly large team at the courthouse today that are trying to catch folks coming and going. we did see state representative -- former state representative bee nguyen and state senator jen jordan today. we saw gabe sterling entering the building as well, folks from the 2020 election will recall he was the person who was often providing an update on what the real voter information was as conspiracy theorys were going around. we've been waiting on this case for about 2 1/2 years now. now it does appear we are ready to go. fani willis's team is moving forward now with haste now that they actually are presenting their case to a grand jury. >> elliot, as this happens, trump as he has been wont to do in previous cases, appeared to apply pressure on one of the key witnesses in this case, that is,
thank you for that. back to you, ken, on the subject of who, and i know we don't know exactly who might be charged or who will be charged. we do have an idea of who might be charged in the target letters. we know big names like rudy giuliani, potentially, sidney powell, potentially, donald trump, obviously potentially. what about the fake electors, is there anything else? >> eight of them have gotten immunity, katy, so the rest of them potentially are liable for charges, and there's a number of people probably known and unknown in this case who are -- we may see some surprises. that's the interesting thing about a sprawling 2 1/2 year investigation, and what's deeply significant about it for me sitting here in washington, covering these justice department cases is that this is the case that donald trump, if he's elected president, cannot make go away. >> that's a very good point. you can't pardon yourself out of a state charge or a state trial.
a courtroom and say under oath that he is pleading guilty because he is guilty. and for no other reason. i think it's very unlikely that we'll ever see that. >> greg, i want to play you some sound from d.a. fani willis talking about what her experiences have been like during this investigation, and then get your thoughts on sort of what the temperature is on the ground. >> all the typical racial slurs that you can imagine. they're very grotesque things. we're on family television, i don't know that i like to say all of them, but slave is one of them, i have been called the n-word more times in the past 2 1/2 years than 100 people combined. >> i used to live in cobb county, and you hear that word a lot, a lot more than people would want to believe for a city too busy to hate. greg, what does that say about the temperature on the ground? and we already talked to blayne
happen, if there are still proceedings going on, the courthouse will remain open. what that tells us, nicolle, is that we are still -- the grand jury is very likely still in session and we could be watching for some sort of decision possibly later this evening. now, i also got another piece of guidance from a source who's familiar with the proceedings. we know that right now they're still hearing witness number 5 out of 10 planned witnesses that they planned to call. that's notable because i broke here on msnbc about 2 1/2 hours ago or so they were hearing witness number 5. they're still hearing that same witness. a little more than two hours later. so that tells me a couple of things. one, whoever this witness number 5 is he or she is important, has a lot to say. there are a lot of questions coming at this person. but it also raises the questions of what could the other presumably five witnesses have to say, who are they. we do know there are two people who are still waiting. george chidi, of course you've heard that name a lot. he's the independent journalist
