Investigators try to piece together what caused balloon crash

Updated: 10:20 PM CDT Jun 29, 2021 Nancy Laflin Target 7 Reporter There are still many questions about the balloon crash that killed five people in New Mexico over the weekend. Now, federal investigators are trying to figure out what caused the balloon to go down in Southwest Albuquerque. "By federal law, they have to do an autopsy on any crew member at his station or her station during an accident," Alan Diehl said. He is a former investigator with the National Transportation Safety Board. He said investigators will look at multiple factors, including the balloon, the equipment inside, the weather and the health of the pilot. "So much of the time with the NTSB does is eliminate things that didn't happen. So, the fact that they're doing an autopsy doesn't mean that they suspect anything is wrong with the pilot they just want to eliminate that as a possibility," he said. He said the investigators should have a preliminary report on what they've found so far, in a matter of days. Diehl said the entire investigation into what caused this crash could go on for months.Watch the video above to learn more about this story.
