Calgary pharmacist suspended, fined over unauthorized access of patient records

CALGARY A Calgary pharmacist has been placed on a three-month suspension following a hearing tribunal that found her guilty of unprofessional conduct.  Shemina Juma was working as a pharmacist with Alberta Health Services when she accessed the health information of numerous patients without authorization.  The records she accessed included her own and the offences occurred on multiple occasions over the course of a 20-month period.  An Alberta College of Pharmacy tribunal found that while Juma had misused her authority, there wasn t anything to suggest that she had disclosed the health information of the patients.  The first month of Juma s suspension will end Feb. 24. The remainder of the suspension will be served following her completion of an ethics course, on her own dime, within the year.

Ex-Mountie denied pursuit of pharmacy career for past crimes

EDMONTON A former RCMP officer, convicted of multiple crimes including fraud and harassment, will not be allowed to practice in the pharmacy profession, a tribunal has ruled. The Alberta College of Pharmacy (ACP) announced on Wednesday that it had cancelled the registration of now former student, Aaron Sayler, citing his past conduct. In September 2018, Sayler was found guilty of four theft and fraud related charges. In 2019, he was charged and convicted with criminal harassment and mischief. A hearing tribunal for ACP ruled that Sayler failed to act with honesty and integrity during the criminal trial in 2019.  An ACP press release noted that while Sayler’s criminal activity did not have anything to do with pharmacy or health, the tribunal found his conduct was still unprofessional.
