SA liquor industry scrambles to avoid another ban on alcohol sales

SA liquor industry scrambles to avoid another ban on alcohol sales By Siphelele Dludla Share JOHANNESBURG - THE SOUTH African liquor industry has warned the government of the potential negative impact on economic recovery and jobs if another ban on the sale of alcohol is imposed. Fears within the industry have been growing since three provinces officially declared a third wave of Covid-19 infections, as this could prompt the government to implement stricter lockdown measures. The tavern sector is worth over R60 billion annually, accounting for 80 – 90 percent of liquor sales in townships, and approximately 43 percent of total alcohol sales. A coalition of liquor traders has written to President Cyril Ramaphosa seeking his audience to help find sustainable solutions to combat the pandemic without banning alcohol.

Cambodia’s Ministry of Health on Monday reported 556 new cases. The tally comes after an 8 pm curfew in place since April was lifted by authorities in Phnom Penh. They also lifted a ban on alcohol sales.

Liquor council slams SAPA over advert comment

Liquor council slams SAPA over advert comment Updated Nomfundo Ngcobo Share this: With coronavirus infection creeping up again, the liquor industry says government can deal with the rise in numbers without having to implement another booze ban.  Pexels The SA Alcohol Policy Alliance has recommended government take a more proactive approach - amid fears of a third Covid-19 wave.  It says government should consider introducing some restrictions on the sale and consumption of alcohol now - instead of a complete ban later.  But the National Liquor Traders Council's Lucky Ntimane says the issues of the industry must be taken into consideration when discussing measures.

Alcohol group calls for tough restrictions on booze access as 3rd wave looms The organisation said government should not wait until the health system becomes overburdened before restrictions are introduced. Picture: 123rf.com 3 hours ago CAPE TOWN - The Southern African Alcohol Policy Alliance is urging government to respond to the threatening third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic by strengthening the current restrictions on alcohol access. The organisation on Monday said government should not wait until the health system became overburdened before introducing restrictions. Director Maurice Smithers said government should take action sooner rather than later. “The in and out of banning is not working, it’s causing a lot of economic pain for people.”
