caught a funnel cloud forming near the stafford-prince william county line as severe storms blew through the region. some cars stopped on the interstate around 5:30 yesterday with all that debris flying around. people nearby said they heard the high winds coming through. >> we saw the damage it did in the neighborhood. there was -- one of the houses has a hole in the roof where the satellite dish was. there is a broken window from a patio chair plying up and hitting it. >> it picked up a bmw, the back end of a bmw, didn't push it anywhere but it folded the trunk. >> reporter: tornadoes were reported in two other virginia counties. one twister cut a six-mile swath of destruction new western new can't county near richmond. a funnel cloud touched down in louisa county which is the same place where the earthquake was also centered back in august. >> they need to catch a break. >> if you live in louisa county, you're feeling like what's going on? do i need to move somewhere else? >> a possible tornado in quantico. it was a dicey late afternoon, very strong thunderstorms that moved through. i know i saw some of the heaviest rain i've seen in this region for about 10 minute yesterday. could see some more thunderstorms later on today. tucker and i were talking about this. we don't expect them to be severe like they were yesterday but there is a possibility of some thunderstorms popping up again. here is a look at hd radar. right now, we are quote, unquote dry. it is not raining but again, we still have the wet road conditions. there is some fog in parts of the area and the like so we're dealing with that again. some clouds out there. not completely cloudy but some clouds. you can see there is more precipitation in areas of heavy rain to the south and west and yes, all of that is moving slowly to the north and east so we'll get some more rain showers in here and maybe some more thunderstorms. temperatures across the region right now in the district where it is 66 degrees. 67degrees in baltimore. dulles airport, 64 degrees and it is 64 in fredericksburg. the forecast for today, we'll see a lot of clouds around. we will see partial sunshine here and there touring the day. it will be rather breezy. temperature will be into the low and mid-70s depending on where you are and there is a chance of more showers and thunderstorms later today. we'll have more on all of this coming up in just a little bit. >> can't wait to dry out from all this. that's for sure. >> let's check in with julie wright and get a look at traffic this morning. wet roads again. >> we've got somed intoing. we had that overnight along the rock creek parkway down near ohio drive, down near the kennedy center. we had reports of standing water near the memorial bridge. take it easy as you head out the front door. we had accident activity reported on the inner loop before 355 and another crash reported on the inner loop near georgia avenue so heads up as you travel eastbound 495 in the direction of silver spring and headed over towards college park. the outer loop in better shape, no incidents to report there. northbound i-95, lanes are open leaving the prince william parkway working your way no newington. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. now to a developing story in montgomery county. where is william mcquain. that is what police want to know. the boy's mother was found dead inside their germantown home. his stepfather is now under arrest but the 11-year-old remains missing. fox 5's sherry ly joins us live from police headquarters in rockville. >> the amber alert for william mcquain remains in effect. when police arrested his stepfather in north carolina and charged him with murder, there was no sign of william. his mother, jane mcquain, was found dead wednesday night. montgomery county police say the 51-year-old was murdered in the bedroom of the germantown condo she shared with her son. police say william had not been seen at his middle school since september 30th. his stepfather, curtis lopez was arrested at a motel in charlotte, north carolina yesterday morning. he is 45 years old and has been charged with first degree murder. mcquain's missing honda crv was found in the parking lot. police haven't given up hope of fining william. >> i tell you, i pray to god he is still alive. >> our priority, our focus right now is to locate william mcquain i don't feel police a lopez and mcquain were married but did not live together. police can't explain why it took nearly two week for someone to report the mother and son missing. when someone did, they say by that time, mcquain had likely been dead for 10 to 12 days. that is the latest here in rockville. back to you. the family of the man killed outside the d.c. 9 nine club is now filing a multimillion-dollar lawsuit. ali mohammed died almost one year ago after an incident that, is that righted when he threw a brick through the window of the club on u street. the employees chased him and were charged with beating him. the charges were dropped when the autopsy results were inconclusive. a closer look at the man who allegedly went on a shooting spree at a beauty salon. we'll check more headlines. stay with us.  beth! hi. looking good! you've lost some weight. thanks! you noticed! you know these clothes are too big now, so i'm donating them. not going back there again. good for you! how'd you do it? to be a funnel cloud forming in louisa county, virginia. yes, the same louisa county which was the epicenter of the earthquake back in august. >> some of the worst damage happened this historic plantation home. it lost part of its roof. the house dates back to 1746. that is too bad. wow! >> 1746. >> yeah. that is amazing. a lot of damage there. okay, luckily no one was hurt though out of all this. but i guess it happens. >> you know, it is strictly coincidence, the earthquake and now tornadoes but again, if you live there and you step outside and you see that cloud, you got to be like -- >> what's next? >> who has it out for us. >> what did we do? you didn't do anything. it is just coincidence. possible tornado yesterday. not possible, in louisa county, a tornado. right near quantico, kind of on the line of stafford and prince william and i think new can't county in virginia as well. so a lot of activity yesterday afternoon. here is the good headline. thunderstorms today but the good part, drier and sunnier by the weekend. i think we'll have a decent weekend. now, having said that, i think tomorrow is going to be rather brisk, rather breezy, perhaps even windy. we'll have to deal with that. here is a look at the sentinel radar. right now, wash is dry. by that, i mean it's not raining. we do have the wet road conditions, standing water in some location. a coastal flood warning in effect for -- is it a warning? yeah, it is a warping. coastal flood warning in effect for baltimore, washington, places like that until noon today. meanwhile, off to the south and west, we have much more rain. some of this is going to come through ourier so we've got mother showers likely and we can't rule out some more thunderstorms. now, here a look at the big picture and you can see here is what happened. a warm front came through, really warmed us up. our high at reagan national got up to 77 degrees. much higher than i thought it would get yesterday. i have to tell you that. that was a warm front that came through, warmed us up, allowed the thunderstorms to pop up and explode. out to our west now, the cold front that of a been showing you, that will be the next feature to come through here. we have more showers and thunderstorms with that. that will drop our temperatures for the weekend. forecast for today though looks like this. plenty of -- i'm sorry. temperatures first. it's early and you've been distracted. 66degrees in washington, d.c. 68 in annapolis, 67 in baltimore. dulles airport as 64 degrees. a mix of clouds and sun today. showers are likely. some more thunderstorms are possible, becoming windy. winds gusting up to 25 miles per hour. 73degrees for your high today. then for tonight, clearing skies, much cooler overnight. 51 in town. that means some of you will be in the 40s tonight. your five-day forecast, check it out. tomorrow, decent, around 70. some of you in the 60s. but around 70. rather breezy sunday for the redskins victory over the trouble spots out there. i-97 at route 100 being they have reports of the accident in the dark unfortunately. you can see the flickering lights. we do have reports this crash is involving an overturned vehicle. it is partially blocking one of the ramps from 197 to exit route 100. it is difficult to see which ramp is blocked. if this is how you travel into work, plan your trip accordingly. that ramp, whichever direction it is, very well could tie you up. so again 97 itself will remain open but it is the ramp that is closed to exit there and route 1 hunch we'll continue without are loop of the beltway heading from the mormon temple over to 270. you can see the variable message signs out there. that is on the outer loop coming from the temple headed around towards 270. if you were traveling on the inare loop of the beltway, they were check for accident activity near georgia avenue so heads up there as you work your way from 270 headed over towards jim moran. accident activity reported here. it is out are loop stacking up as you work your way out of silver spring. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. no cell phone service, gridlock on dose streets, ten years after alert, a lot longer for the director to respond to his e-mail. >> i sent you an e-mail within an hour after the earthquake. it wasn't what's going on but it was something like that. you got back to me easily a day later. >> reporter: gridlock was also an issue last january when many were stranded in their car as a snowstorm hit. in that case, federal employees were allowed to leave early but not told to do so. >> they were given the option of leaving and they chose not to leave because the sky was sunny and they said nothing is going to happen. >> in response to a winter storm and earthquake, d.c. officials agree more has to be done to improve communication and make sure commuters know exactly what to do. >> there are some things that we are working on that we believe are going to really impact our ability to safely get people to where they need to be. >> reporter: d.c. officials have already been in contact with the federal government and other major companies here in the city to the white i guess parts that were on the grass just funneling in the air and then i had water coming out of my ceiling. once it was all over, i came outside and saw all the damage that it did in the neighborhood. >> it had picked up eight -- the fire department said i think it was five or six, maybe eight, at that time, we was all excited, of the manhole covers and threw them about four blocks on top of the neighbor's house and apparently there is water damage. >> the national weather service has con if you recalled from the video that i tornado did hit near quantico and will further take a look at that later this morning. >> we have a letter in who sawed they believe there were two tornadoes and they are trying to look at that. we are not expecting and -- an outbreak of severe weather but stay next to your tv or radio. we full hi expect more showers a little bit later on this morning and then during the course of the day too. and could be some areas of heavy rain and thunderstorm activithave the thunderstorms, we'll keep our eyes open. the dynamics are different today than they were yesterday so right now, we are not expecting severe weather but we'll keep our eyes open and shoulders so our lanes are open right now as you travel west of the mormon temple headed over towards connecticut avenue but again, there is a lot of flashing lights to see here, a lot of activity as you work your way around on georgia avenue so anticipate a slower than usual commute at this time. if you are traveling westbound along 66, we've got big delays here starting to form out in man as as you work your way in from 50 headed in towards 123. all lanes are open. i-97 at route 100, authorities are on the scene of a crash there. follow police direction to get by. that's a check of your fox reporter: good morning. police had hoped to find 11- year-old william mcquain with his stepfather who was arrested in north carolina but he was not with him. now, all efforts are being made to find william and find him alive. his mother, jane mcquain, was found dead wednesday night. police say she's been dead 10 to 12 days when they found her murdered inside her germantown condo. her son hasn't been seen at his middle school since september 30th where he is a sixing grader. yesterday morning, police arrested his stepfather, curtis lopez. they caught up with the 45-year- old at a motel in charlotte, north carolina. he is now charged with first degree murder. mcquain's missing honda crv was in the parking lot but no sign of william. >> according to witnesses, mr. lopes was recently seen in the area of ms. mcquain's residence and was seen removing property from the residence and loading in t. into the victim's vehicle. >> i talked to him for about 20 minutes. just as cool as a cucumber like nothing going on. >> reporter: police say that mcquain and lopez were estranged. montgomery county schools say it is their policy, if a student is missing from school to try to contact a parent or an emergency contact but they haven't saying specifically what efforts were made to find william. it was a person who knew jane mcquain that finally reported her missing to police nearly two baltimore. 34 in fredericksburg and winchester. our highs later today, how about 40 degrees? that won't be bad. partly sunny skies this afternoon after an early flurry and winds will be out of the north and west at 10. weather should be just fine right through the end of the week. >> it will be perfect for it. any time we can be above freezing, it's good. >> great start to the commute today. no major problems to report on the area roadways as you travel 95 in maryland southbound. your construction should be wrapping up. route 50 the john hanson highway, incident-free. take a look at 270 south out of frederick, can you see a nice and easy ride down toward the split. traveling the beltway, no problems to report in maryland. in virginia, we did have overnight construction between 66 and the little river turnpike. that is picking up. here we are at route 50, arlington boulevard. you can see everybody is running at speed on both the inner and outer loop. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. >> as we check headlines, a community mourning a grocery store owner as police release new clues in his murder. dozens came out to remember raj patel who was shot during a robbery attempt. overnight, police released pictures from the surveillance cameras showing the two suspects. if anybody has any information in this case, they are asked to call d.c. police. there is a $25,000 reward being offered in this case. also making headlines this morning, the death of a man oudc-9 nightclub in october has now been ruled a homicide. the coroner's report does not indicate he was fatally beaten as initially thought. it also indicated that the victim may have had a preexisting heart condition. friends of muhammed hope the findings will get the charges reinstated against the employees who were recently cleared in that case. >> my reaction was relief in that what we've been saying all along this these employees led to the death of ali muhammed. montgomery county police are looking for two men who shot and killed a teenager in silver spring yesterday afternoon. students were ordered to stay inside a school as a precaution. investigators say the teen was shot in the chest and died at the hospital. the suspects drove away. in las vegas, police are talking about organizing a search for the missing dancer originally from anne arundel county. investigators are looking for leads to find the woman. she was last seen leaving her ex-boyfriend's apartment nine days ago. prince george's county schools could take i big hit to help close and expected $140 million budget shortfall for the upcoming fiscal year. the layoffs are expected to save $89 million eliminating sports who save $800,000. we may find out later today who will be the new d.c. schools chancellor when mayor elect vincent gray announces five members of his education administration right now, kaya henderson is the interim chancellor. a number of travelers here and across the pond are still stranded knowledging a major snowstorm in europe. heathrow airport in london has canceled hundreds of flights since the weekend. it is having a ripple effect at the airports in the states too including dulles international. a gaithersburg, maryland man is trying to rebook just like everyone else so he can get to india. >> my father-in-law is having the surgery there. he has just been diagnosed with cancer. so i really have to get there. >> a bit of good news though. both runways at heathrow have opened but service may not fully be restored until tomorrow. president obama will make history this morning when he signs the repeal of the pentagon's ban on openly gay soldiers. for more on this, audrey barnes joins us from outside the white house this morning. >> reporter: this is and historic day. some would say it is very much like the end of racial segregation in the military. at 9:15, president barack obama will sign a bill repealing don't ask, don't tell. what that means is that gay members of the military no longer have to hide their sexual orientation. now, the service teams of the different branches of the military still have to come up with an incident plementation plan and they have a lot to take into account. they need to make sure that combat readiness isn't compromised and also things like housing have to be taken into consideration as well. so many people wanted to be here no here is a look at mesquite, nevada, one of many places under a state of emergency because of flooding. in arizona, four homes were washed away in the northern part of arizona. more than were expected to be lost overnight. in california, governor arnold schwarzenegger has declared a state of emergency in six counties because of flooding and mudslides there. in two foothill suburbs of los angeles, more than 200 homes have been ordered evacuated. forecasters there expect more rain today. my gosh, they can't catch a break out there. >> like a fire hose. that is the same storm system we're watching for the end of the weekend around here. >> which could bring snow. >> possibly, yes. >> we don't want to hype that up but it could happen. >> we've been talking about all week. it is all nurse jerry lee, a 31-year veteran says she tried to get to work for her 7:00 p.m. shift but the roads were just too bad. when she called the hospital, she says a manager told her -- >> if you refuse to come in, you will be held insubordinate. and at that point, i said i don't know what i'm supposed to do. >> reporter: lee was suspended indefinitely and later fired. >> on the 11th, i received a certified mail saying after reviewing the facts and circumstances, we decided that you were grossly insubordinate. >> the agreement has always been, the policy has always been, that absences during are minor. no word on what caused that accident. some major cuts may be on the way to prince george's county schools. the school superintendent says there are a number of proposals on the table to next year. the track owners were asking for a much smaller calendar in order to save money. horse community says that would cost them their livelihood. beth parker has more. >> reporter: the preakness. it is one-third of horse racing's prestigious triple crown. the real battle is inside this room at laurel park, a showdown before the maryland racing commission that some say could kill horse racing in maryland. >> this ownership has brought maryland racing to the virg of -- the verge of ruin and we all know it. the question now is what do we do in the short term. >> frank stronack represents the real estate company that jointly owns the track. he says the group is losing million each year. >> i would do everything i can that we have horse racing but it has got to make economic sense. we can't year after year subsidize the racing facilities here. >> reporter: horse groups and track owners can not agree on how many races will be run in 2011 and how money will be spent and earned. the maryland racing commission voted no to deny the track owner's proposed business plan and its application for 2011 racing dates. >> we need ownership that is willing to operate this business on a year-round basis. >> reporter: there is fear the disagreement could bring an end to racing in maryland at least under the current ownership. >> it is difficult. many sleepless nights. you don't know. we all depend on this industry from the bottom to the top. and it is difficult. >> reporter: now, some at today's meeting urged governor o'malley to step in and take the track using eminent domain i'm spokesman for the governor says they are exploring all legal options. the governor says he will do whatever it takes to protect the preakness and horse racing in maryland in general >> some eyewitnesses tell police that in the early morning hours, he tried to enter the closed dc9 nightclub. he was turned away but came back and threw a brick through the window. four barge owners then got into the ground but did not beat him. others say the opposite. they say that ali was not drinking and the five men beat him to death. based on insufficient evidence, the district attorney drop the charges in the investigation. it was not good enough for this community. >> you want these five behind bars? >> we want justice. to drop the charges, they are delaying and we know where that might go. >> to utterly deny him justice is pretty much dragging him out of his grave and then putting him back in again. officeu.s. attorney's says they are investigating. they are waiting for some evidence to come back. as for the dc9 nightclub, it remains shut down indefinitely. >> thank you. we are following breaking news right now. one of four suspects accused of murdering a and a school principal is expected to greet guilty. the trial was expected to begin one week from today but within the hour we have learned that saunders will appear in court to plead guilty to first-degree murder. three other people also face charges. d.c. police are looking for the man who fled the scene of a deadly crash. a pedestrian was hit around 1:00 a.m. in southeast. police say the victim was found lying in the roadway of south capitol street and martin luther king avenue. investigators believe the striking vehicle may have been a mercedes. investigators are working to determine what caused a massive fire in falls church. the house had been under construction for several years, and sunday, the house that some called an eyesore, was burned down. no injuries but there was minor damage to neighboring properties. let's turn to the weather now. after an early sunrise, we are dealing with a sunny but chilly day. adam caskey has a look at the forecast. you said this week is kind of boring for me urologists? man who died after a boating accident. three men were fishing on the patuxent river saturday. had enginehing boat problems, and a wave rushed over the boat, causing it to sink. now we turn to another top story this monday morning. planned protest after five men accused of murder walk free. ali mohamad died after an alleged altercation outside d.c. nightclub, and courtney robinson has the latest. >> good morning, allison. then themembers of the european community, france, and family are anchored by -- of the ethiopian community, friends, and family, are angered by his death. they're going to gather outside of the attorney's office. in the early morning hours of october, this worker at the dc9 nightclub say mohammad threw a brick through the club's glass front. four workers and an owner chased him down and beat him to death. there were initially charges, but the lack of evidence and conflicting witness reports led prosecutors to drop charges, outraging the community, and of course the victim's family. the d.c.'s attorney's office says the investigation is not over and they will continue this. meantime, the authorities shut down the nightclub. at 10:00 a.m. this morning, we will see many people expected to gather here and protest the dropped charges by the d.c. u.s. attorney's office. >> courtney robinson live in northwest. thank you very much. investigators will sift through the remains of a falls church home trying to figure out what sparked the blaze that burned to the ground. neighbors called the house an eyesore and say it has been under construction for several boarding pass. for now tsa says that small differences such as middle initials should not have an impact on travel. bad news for democrats on the eve of decision 2010. a new nbc news/wall street journal poll shows 49% of likely voters say theprefer a gop-led congress. 43% say they want democrats to stay in charge. if republicans are able to take control of congress they will do so with a damaged brand, however. 41% said they had an unfavorab view of the gop. while 34% say they see the party in a positive light. the gop is making a strong push in the 11th district of virginia. they are a carnival ride. >> this was all of a sudden you ki of heard a noise. and the whole escalator lurched. it's look it let go. so it started accelerating three or four mes as fast as it would normally go. >> it was kind of scary. i didn't know when i had fallen how many people were going to fall on top of me. >> reporter: the cause is still under investigation. initially metro reported the escalator stopped. after hearing witness accounts they are now looking into reportshat it sped up before failing. metro riders have long been frustratedy broken escalator. you might go to a station situation. it happened at 10:45 in the morning across from a neighborhood. the woman was visiting the post office in chevy chase and was returning back to her vehicle when approached by four men in a connecticut avenue moving toward the district. the dow edged instructed was reported stolen on october 16 -- the dodge intrepid. the woman was not injured. anyone with information is asked to call police. there's a traffic alert for drivers in northwest d.c. westbound constitution avenue downtown is still closed between ninth street and 12th street. afton street is closed between pennsylvania and constitution because crews are still working to fix -- after the water main break on friday. looking to the day ended, the jury selection continues in the trial of the man accused of killing
