THE World Health Organization (WHO) has announced a naming system for variants of the coronavirus that uses letters of the Greek alphabet.
Under the new naming scheme, the B.1.1.7 variant first identified in the UK, commonly referred to as the Kent variant, is labelled “alpha”, the B.1.351 variant identified in South Africa is “beta”, the P.1 variant which first originated in Brazil is “gamma” and the B.1.617.2 variant first detected in India is “delta”. These Greek letter labels will only be given to “variants of concern” and “variants of interest” as defined by the WHO.

Officials are warning people to get tested and self-quarantine if they have any of symptoms associated with the virus. Symptoms of COVID-19 are cough, headache, sore throat, and congestion and may include fever, cough, chills, body aches, and loss of taste or smell.
Faith Lustik is a planner with the Jefferson County Department of Public Health. She says community spread has gotten worse this month because people have ignored the symptoms of COVID-19.
"People are telling us that they just thought they had allergies," Lustik said. "They were still going out they were still going to work, so there’s a great deal of people who are quarantined because they’ve exposed so many people."
