Mexico's anti-trust watchdog files Supreme Court case against electricity reforms

By Reuters Staff 1 Min Read MEXICO CITY, April 22 (Reuters) - Mexico’s antitrust authority on Thursday said it had filed a dispute in the Supreme Court against the government’s electricity reforms. The Federal Economic Competition Commission (COFECE) said some of the changes proposed by Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s government prevent competition in the sector. “It breaks the rule of open and non-discriminatory access to distribution and transmission networks, which reduces the ability to compete for certain generators and traders,” Cofece said in a statement. Illumina had remained the company’s largest shareholder.

UK regulator says Issa's purchase of Asda raises some competition concerns

By Reuters Staff 1 Min Read LONDON, April 20 (Reuters) - Britain’s competition regulator said on Tuesday it was concerned the Issa brothers and private equity group TDR Capital’s 6.8 billion pound ($9.5 billion) takeover of the Asda supermarket chain could lead to higher fuel prices for UK motorists. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said it has given the buyers five working days to offer legally binding proposals to address the competition concerns identified to avoid an in-depth phase 2 investigation. Daimler's Spanish unit can be liable for cartel damages, EU court adviser says

3 Min Read BRUSSELS (Reuters) -Daimler’s Spanish unit can be liable for damages sought by companies affected by the German carmaker’s role in a truck cartel fined by EU antitrust regulators five years ago, an adviser to Europe’s top court said on Thursday. FILE PHOTO: Daimler AG sign is pictured at the IAA truck show in Hanover, Germany, September 22, 2016. REUTERS/Fabian Bimmer/File Photo/File Photo Should the court follow the non-binding opinion in the coming months, it could pave the way for companies to sue subsidiaries of other cartel members and other illegal price-fixing groups. The European Commission in 2016 handed out a then record 2.9 billion euro fine to the cartel which included Daimler, Swedish company Volvo, Iveco, which is part of Italian truck and tractor maker CNH Industrial, and DAF Trucks, owned by U.S. company Paccar.

UPDATE 1-UK watchdog asks FNZ to divest GBST on competition concerns

By Reuters Staff (Adds no comment from FNZ) April 15 (Reuters) - UK’s competition watchdog has provisionally found that the 2019 acquisition of investment technology firm GBST Holdings by rival FNZ raises competition concerns and has asked it to sell the business with an option to buy back certain capital markets assets. “The reduction of competition in the market could lead to higher prices or poorer service for retail platforms to the ultimate detriment of UK consumers who hold pensions or other investments that are managed by these platforms,” said Martin Coleman, Chair of the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) inquiry group.

2 Min Read BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Ryanair on Wednesday had another setback in its fight against state aid for rival airlines after Europe’s second-highest court again backed EU competition regulators’ approval of support for SAS and Finnair. FILE PHOTO: A Ryanair Boeing 737-800 airplane takes off from the airport in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, July 29, 2018. REUTERS/Paul Hanna/File Photo Europe’s biggest budget airline has filed 16 lawsuits against the European Commission for allowing state aid to individual airlines such as Lufthansa, KLM, Austrian Airlines and TAP, as well as national schemes that mainly benefit flag carriers. The EU competition watchdog has to date cleared more than 3 trillion euros ($3.6 trillion) to help virus-hit companies across the 27-country bloc. The airline industry has been among the hardest hit due to lockdowns and travel restrictions.
