This week, the Volusia County school district announced it will welcome volunteers back to campuses on a limited bases as well as permit some academic field trips. Large events like proms and graduation bashes are still not allowed.
Flagler County's spring break was the week of March 15 and Volusia's was last week. Now, officials are watching to see whether there will be an increase in cases after the break similar to when students returned in January.
The state's numbers include a breakdown of how many cases are in each school — information the districts have been unwilling to provide. Neither agency is providing information about how many students or staff members are in quarantine.

COVID cases top 1,800 in Volusia, Flagler schools, state says

On Friday the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated its existing guidance to say teachers don't need to be vaccinated for schools to reopen safely, and reinforced its recommendation to socially distance. This has been difficult to achieve in Volusia County, where the majority of students are learning in-person.
Florida Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran said in a statement that districts should "stay the course they began in summer 2020."
The number of new cases is appearing to slow down from a peak earlier this year. In January, the Volusia County school district reported about 500 cases of COVID-19 in public schools and Flagler reported about 100.
New Hanover County Schools reported 100 cases of Covid-19 the week of Feb. 1-5.
SOUTHEASTERN N.C. — New Hanover County Schools reported 100 cases of Covid-19 among its students and staff the week of Feb. 1-5, including 12 individuals at Isaac Bear Early College High, according to the district’s reporting.
A total of 205 people are quarantining after being exposed to the virus at NHCS locations.

Since NHCS launched its reporting dashboard — which is where Port City Daily obtains data for its weekly updates — the school system has been met with skepticism about the accuracy of its reporting. Administrators said the school system only posts cases that are self-reported by parents to the schools, which means some positive tests are unreported.
