Happy World Rum Day! To celebrate this remarkable spirit, get into the basics of rum and how to drink it.
What is rum?
To put it simply, rum is any spirit that is distilled from sugarcane byproducts – such as the molasses, juice, honey and so on.
However, there is a lot more to this category than you think. Rums can be a very confusing category for the casual drinker, as unlike other categories of spirits like whisky, brandy and even gin, there is no clear definition of the different rums in the world.

Willie Mullins has been utterly dominant at Punchestown this week and looks to hold another strong hand in the Coolmore Kew Gardens Irish EBF Mares Champion Hurdle (15:20), the first of two Grade 1 events on the final day of the meeting.
Mullins is responsible for four of the nine runners as he seeks an eighth success in the race since 2010, including the 2019 runner-up Stormy Ireland, who has returned to her former stable after a spell with Paul Nicholls which included a few tries over fences. She proved at least as good as ever on her first start back in Ireland when winning a Grade 2 contest at Fairyhouse last time, making all the running to beat the smart French Dynamite by a length and a quarter.

Zambian rock and popular music, often dubbed as Zamrock, has featured several times in the column over recent years.
Last year, World Beat reviewed the work and career of Zambian music pioneer Rikki Ililonga, whose work featured on the compilation Dark Sunrise from the Los Angeles based Now-Again record label. His band, Musi-O-Tunya, released Wings Of Africa in Kenya in 1973, but it was not released in Zambia until 1975.
In fact, it was Zambia's most popular band WITCH that actually released the first indigenous rock album, Introduction, way back in 1964 (around the time of Zambian independence). WITCH, an acronym that stands for "We Intend To Create Havoc" (an admirable slogan for a rock band) was led by main vocalist Emanuel "Jagari" Chanda. They became known as "Zambia's Beatles".

ON SATURDAY 20 March, Jack Kennedy was back in action at Thurles racecourse.
It was less than 24 hours since the biggest win of his career, a landmark moment in becoming the youngest jockey in modern times to claim the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
In racing, it is one of the quirks of the trade to operate under the intense glare of the sporting spotlight and then resume riding in an off-Broadway setting the following day.

The Irish Grand National (5.00) is the big race on the card on Easter Monday at Fairyhouse with Latest Exhibition likely to go off favourite for trainer Paul Nolan. He has plenty of class but will have to shoulder top weight to win.
I was always a fan of THE BIG DOG for this race but he was withdrawn early on Monday due to the drying ground. He is a bit of a mudlark and would have seen JJ Codd cutting to his lowest weight in almost 20 years to take the ride. With him out, I'm backing two in this year's renewal, the first being
