Liberty (51st) State Proposal Has Twice The Support in 2021
No idea how far this will go, but it s definitely picked up some momentum.
Over the years, the idea of splitting Washington state in half, or down the Cascades, and creating a new state of Liberty has been introduced by one GOP legislator.
Last year, two supported the measure. Now, there are four.
Tom Dent along with Republicans Rob Chase, Bob McCaslin, and Robert Sutherland are fully behind the legislation. Dent is a House Rep from Moses Lake. The plan would split the state down the spine of the Cascades, and it would most likely be called Liberty.

It’s baaaack.
Like Arnold Schwarzenegger in a “Terminator” movie, the proposal to split Washington at the Cascade Crest and create a new state out of the eastern half has returned to the Legislature.
This despite the fact that its prime sponsor in recent years, Rep. Matt Shea, is now former Rep. Matt Shea. The issue has been picked up by Shea’s sort-of successor, freshman Rep. Rob Chase.
(We qualify the description because Chase technically was elected to the other House seat in the Spokane Valley’s 4th District when he and incumbent Rep. Bob McCaslin did a switcheroo on the final day of filing. But Chase, a Libertarian turned Republican and county treasurer turned legislator, is the newbie resulting from Shea’s decision not to run.)
Here We Go Again: Will 2021 Be the Year Liberty Becomes State 51?
Another Washington legislative session, another bill introduced to break the state down the Cascades to form Liberty, a 51st state made up of eastern Washington, only.
Washington state Representatives Bob McCaslin and Rob Chase, from the Spokane area, District 4, Positions 1 and 2 respectively, are proposing House Bill 1239 that would establish the state of Liberty. This idea has been bandied about back and forth since 2019, but never has it been given serious consideration.
House Bill 1239 would create Liberty with the borders of the would-be 51st state following the crest of the Cascade mountains and the western borders of Okanogan, Chelan, Kittitas, Yakima, and Klickitat counties. The eastern, northern, and southern borders of Liberty are the existing state borders.
