OPINION: Letters to the editor

Osman explores all sides of an issue I am writing to express my strong support for the election of Franny Osman to the town of Acton Select Board. I have had the pleasure of working with Franny on a variety of local issues and have always been impressed with her desire to explore all sides of an issue so as to come to sensible and balanced solution to the issue at hand. As a person who believes strongly in the protection of our local open spaces, woodlands and farms, I particularly appreciate Franny’s support for open space preservation and environmental protection. Franny played a key role in the preservation of the Wright Hill property in West Acton and the Piper Lane property in South Acton. I also greatly appreciate Franny’s support for increasing both low- and moderate-income housing opportunities in Acton, and her recognition that land protection and fair housing are not mutually exclusive issues, but rather equally important components of a healthy community.

Acton Conservation Trust (ACT) spreading word on important Town Meeting vote

Wicked Local Leading up to Acton Town Meeting, Susan Mitchell-Hardt and the Trustees of the Acton Conservation Trust (ACT) want residents to know about an important vote on June 21 - the opportunity to save the nearly 100 year-old, 51.5 acre Stonefield Farm. We ve been hanging in there for years and praying for a miracle, which happened this year, said Mitchell-Hardt, president of ACT. The farm was founded by the Simeone family in 1929 and is considered an Acton landmark. It is located in South Acton along Martin, Stow and Liberty streets, as well as along the Assabet River Rail Trail. According to Mitchell-Hardt, owners Paul, Carl, and Mike Simeone recently agreed to sell the farm to the Boston Area Gleaners (BAG), a nonprofit food rescue and relief organization. She said BAG has offered Acton a chance to place an agricultural preservation restriction (APR) on all 51.5 acres of the land - which means the land would be permanently kept as farmland.
