Hawaii To Add Fee To Tours, Water Activities To Help Protect The Ocean

TravelAwaits Jun.22.2021 Tourists who spend time on the water in Hawaii will soon be required to pay a fee in support of the conservation and protection of the state’s endangered marine resources. Governor David Ige signed into law this month legislation that establishes, among other things, a fee to help safeguard marine resources. “Hundreds of millions of visitors have enjoyed our magnificent ocean resources for decades without directly contributing to the management and protection of them,” Suzanne Case, chair of the Department of Land and Natural Resources, said in a statement. “This new fund provides a framework to collect fees from visitors who use our waters.”

Kahaluʻu Beach Park in Kona Closed for Coral Spawning

Hawaii Magazine Kahaluʻu Beach Park in Kona Closed for Coral Spawning From May 28 to June 5, the popular bay on Hawaiʻi Island will be closed to help the vulnerable cauliflower coral. May 18, 2021 Cauliflower coral ( Pocillopora meandrina)—called koʻa in Hawaiian— is a surge-tolerant species of reef-building coral that you often find in exposed shorelines around the Islands. As its name indicates, this coral resembles the cruciferous vegetable, with a dense skeleton, sturdy branches and symmetrical head formation. It protects Hawaiʻi’s shorelines and provides habitat for fish and crabs. Early Hawaiians used koʻa like sand paper to file or sand wood objects.

Dredging in Honolulu Harbor Causes Serious Coral Damage

Dredging in Honolulu Harbor Causes Serious Coral Damage HONOLULU – The State is investigating the circumstances associated with what is described as significant damage to corals and live rock near the entrance channel to Honolulu Harbor. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers contracted dredging work to the Healy Tibbets Corporation. It is alleged the contractor dragged the dredging platform’s anchor and cable across coral colonies and deposited dredged material on corals. Divers from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service were conducting water quality monitoring on May 4 when they noticed damage stretching across an estimated 17,500 square yards. They photographed broken and toppled coral colonies and dredged material smothering them. The divers reported the damage to the DLNR Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR) which is responsible for coral ecosystems in State waters.

10-year battle of sea urchins vs. invasive seaweed | University of Hawaiʻi System News

DNLR/ DAR) The first hatchery-raised sea urchins outplanted in Kāneʻohe Bay are 10-years-old, and the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit ( DAR) are celebrating the milestone anniversary. The sea urchin hatchery, funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ( NOAA) and DAR, successfully transplanted the first cohort in January 2011 and has since released 600,000 sea urchins across the state. Project staff raise the sea urchins until they’re large enough to be released into the wild. (Photo credit: DNLR/ DAR) These sea urchins have proven to be incredibly successful at controlling invasive seaweed, a major priority for coral conservation in Hawaiʻi. To date, the sea urchin biocontrol project has treated more than 227 acres of reef in Kāneʻohe Bay, and has recently expanded to the Waikīkī Marine Life Conservation District to control invasive algae.
