The Vanderbilt medical community was mourning the loss an employee who died in flooding that took place throughout Middle Tennessee over the weekend.
Vanderbilt University Medical Center on Wednesday identified the victim as VUMC Director of Service Learning and Measurement Maria Melton.
According to her LinkedIn page, Melton worked for VUMC for close to seven years and was also an adjunct professor at Trevecca Nazarene University.
Records show Melton, 45, most recently lived on Leiper’s Creek Road in Columbia, Tennessee, and previously lived in Chicago.
Melton is among seven people found dead in Tennessee after record rainfall over the weekend in the worst flooding for the region since 2010.

The Maury County Commission has unanimously approved an immediate increase in compensation for sworn officers and corrections personnel at the Maury County Sheriff’s Department.
Sheriff Bucky Rowland, who has been advocating for the salary increases, believes the boost will help to retain current officers and attract future ones.
The raises represent $5,914.96 for captains, an $8,954.30 increase for lieutenants and a $16,923.82 for sergeants within the department.
Sergeants working within the local jail will see a $7,076.37 increase and maintenance staff working at the local corrections facility will see a $2,555.22 increase.
The raises also offer increases to social security, retirement, disability and medical to the department’s employees.
