Safe & Healthy Big Bend hosts virtual memorial to honor Leon County residents lost to COVID-19

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) â At the one-year anniversary of the first local COVID-19 death, a group of community leaders will come together to commemorate the lives that have been lost and provide words of hope for the days ahead.
Leaders from the faith community, education, law enforcement, health care and local government will gather virtually on Friday, April 16 at noon to share their stories from the pandemic. The public is invited to virtually attend the memorial â and it will be recorded for broad access by residents after the live event.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) â Two out of 10 deaths in Florida are due to heart disease according to the Florida Department of Health.
Cardiologists say it s important to know your risk factors, such as family history, other illnesses, and obesity. In minority communities, there s a greater risk for heart disease. That s because many minority communities experience those risk factors such as hypertension and diabetes. They re also more likely to live in a place with poor access to healthcare.
FSU begins COVID-19 vaccine distribution on campus

On Wednesday afternoon, the first COVID-19 vaccines were administered to the university’s 65-plus community including students and faculty and frontline healthcare workers.
Florida State University has partnered with the Florida Department of Health in Leon County to offer the vaccination and has also received vaccines from Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare and Capital Regional Medical Center.
According to University Communications, “University Health Services is scheduled to vaccinate 200 individuals, a group that includes FSU’s 65 and older population and frontline healthcare workers. Last week, UHS vaccinated 100 university-affiliated health care workers.”
Dr. Neil Charness, a professor of psychology at FSU, and the William G. Chase Professor of Psychology Director, received his vaccine through the university on Wednesday afternoon.
