>> i agree in the stars alignment with the big question mark of the middle east and the price of oil. you know, in the same way that we saw the problems with europeans sovereign debt knocking the u.s. economy off last year. i think that, you know, the real danger is now. the car industry seems to coming back. >> the numbers immediately factor into our political debates. if we were having this conversation six months or a year ago, you would have people saying the problem is the uncertainty. what will washington do about spending cuts or the tax code? what should washington do now? if you have evidence the recovery is gaining steam and the businesses are starting to hire, should washington get out ofty and do nothing or should it do something? >> well, i think the government has done a lot.

coming from china and india and other countries. america's got to do business with these countries. america has to create jobs in this country to export to those countries. and reinvent the wheel of its business economy. and i think he is right. i think it's a good speech. it's an inspirational speech. i think the sputnik analogy is a good one. because when that happened, america was left behind. and there is a real danger at the moment of it being left behind by china. and the answer is to get into china. look at general motors. they are a lot of cars in china. other american businesses have got to start creating and exporting to these countries and making them business partners. >> general motors is selling more cars in china now than general motors is selling in the united states. and pretty soon general motors might be the number one car seller in the entire world. and it wasn't that long ago, david gergen, when general motors was if not bankrupt, it was on the verge of bankruptcy. >> we've gone from nearly 500,000 jobs in michigan and the car industry to about 100,000 jobs in the car industry. that's the decline. that is what is really, and i
