WICOMICO COUNTY, Md. – Wicomico County Council is weighing whether or not to move forward with their version of the HORIZON Program. The HORIZON Program is would provide tax incentives for developers who are looking to make Wicomico County their new home. Developers with large hotel or residential projects would continue to pay their base property tax rates. But as the projects grow and construction gets under way, their increasing property taxes would be controlled and slowly increased in steps.
Proponents say the program could bring a boom in business and benefit the county overall. “Our goal has been to develop downtown and bring our city back to life. That philosophy is beds and heads. With that comes businesses that grow the economy,” said Salisbury City Council member Muir Boda. “The idea is to develop them and turn them into properties that develop tax revenue. In Wicomico County we have the revenue cap. So, as tax revenue increases, the taxes on residents, property taxes, will have to go down.”

MARYLAND – Lawmakers have reached the final day of their legislative session, with mostly fine-tuning left to do.
They had a productive three months, despite being slowed by pandemic precautions. With priority on pandemic relief and police reform already passed, lawmakers are focusing on finishing touches to send legislation to Governor Larry Hogan. That’s before their scheduled adjournment at midnight.
One of the measures left unresolved, the implementation of sports betting, which voters approved with 67% support in November. Lawmakers are also dealing with ways to support small businesses, restaurants, addressing unemployment, housing and climate solutions.
One delegate shares with us his concerns as they finish their last day in Annapolis. “It seems they are more interested in Annapolis going after legal gun ownership than illegal gun ownership and I think the focus needs to be on the ladder before we do anything else,” says Maryland Delegate Carl Anderton,” Make sure folks have money coming in, so that way they can still afford to live their life.”

MARYLAND- For some in the state of Maryland, banning thin plastic bags is a top priority they want to see this legislative session.
That’s why a group of Maryland leaders and organizations hosted a virtual rally Thursday urging Maryland’s Legislature to pass the Plastic Bag Reduction Act.
“Single use plastic bags they’re everywhere they litter our neighborhoods, our streets, our communities, our waterways, our beaches,” Del. Brooke Lierman, (D) MD District 46, said.
Maryland leaders said if House Bill 36 is passed it would get rid of thin plastic bags at the checkout counter, instead giving consumers plastic-free choices, which would help clean up communities.
